Ok,here it is,a thread of your own, give it your best shot.

Deej,Starz & everyone else, lets hear it although we kinda already know.
Try to keep to the point,no ridiculous claims if possible....unlikely I know.

Lets compare apples to apples, who would win over 1600,2000 & 2400 & why?

Can someone who's capable post their career figures please.

Ultimately you’re judged on the majors (Melb Cup/Cox Plate) they're the big races which are 2000m+ and how you win them. The BMW/Aust Cup/Caulfield crapshoot are a nice feather in the cap too.

The big races - That’s where the diva is in a league of her own.

Power - Diva
Stamina - Diva
Accelaration - You guessed it

Doesn’t matter what distance, what course, track rating, match race or big field.
At the top of her game, unbeatable. Maybe 1600m or less you would have a saver on Northerly.

I loved Might and Power and Northerly too, which out of those two would finish second in the big races?
Too hard to call at 2000m. 3200m M&P.

I've done mine to 12 horse fields just because don't like match races

1600m - Northerly - Might & Power - Makybe Diva
For me I'll love to add Sunline to this mix, without a doubt the best Miler I've seen. I can't put my finger on it but I just like Northerly over 1600m maybe it was some of his WA wins. That said Might and Power should have won the Epsom Hcp in 97

2040m - Might & Power - Northerly - Makybe Diva
Going on their Moonee Valley runs because thats where the WFA Championship is, have to go the Power here. He'll not only break their hearts, he'll do it easily.
remember that no horse has gotten within 1 and a half seconds of his time around the Valley since his Cox Plate win.

2400 - Might & Power - Northerly - Makybe Diva
The Caulfield Cup this one
Might & Power had one start over this trip and dist and broke the Australian Record and won by 7 lengths running away. to me he was the best 2400m horse I'll ever see. Northerly would fight off the mare who would be finishing fast. M&P should have won the AJC derby (very unlucky) & he won the BMW by 10 lengths 2400m record speaks for its self

3200m - Makybe Diva - Might and Power - Northerly
her record at the 3200m was awesome. I think its 6 starts for 4 wins, at WFA tho I think she might fail but M&P was a 2400m horse and Northerly a 1600 - 2200 horse.

Your post makes the most good sense to me.

We can only dream to have a Cox Plate race with the calibre of Northerly,MP and MD at their respective peaks. My feeling would be that it would be a race to the line between Northerly and MP with MD chasing hard from behind and would have won if there was an extra 100-200m.

To me at 3200m MD is unmatched. Over the mile I like Northerly.

Northerly v Might and Power would have been fascinating. There's no way anyone could say who would win - M&P in the lead, Northerly sitting behind him or at his girth...
I agree, I find it hard to swing either way due to Northerly's strength's in his racing style, stalking and heart. Might and Power was a heartbreaker, but Northerly was a horse that was impossible to dominate. You could say Northerly would've done the same he did to Sunline, stalk him and out gun him in the straight with his acceleration and fight. Two races confuse me with these two, first is Freemason beating Northerly using tactics similar to what M&P would've done, but then Northerly probably wasn't at his best up there. 2nd race is Might and Power coming from behind to beat Tycoon Lil in the Yalumba, her showed good acceleration that day but it's likely he wouldn't have caught a fighter like Northerly.
I reckon it's a disservice to split the two, they were both freaks with differing strengths that imo are too difficult to line up.

The one thing i'm more sure on is the fact MD would've been behind them. Just not enough toe to keep up with M&P, and not suitable racing style to beat Northerly. she comes at him, he keeps finding, just like he did with everyone else. He could sustain a 1000m sprint just as good if not better than her, and to do that from the lead or stalking made him nearly invincible when in form.

Actually there's one thing i could predict from Northerly 2001-2002, he probably would've tried to bite M&P as they got near the line if it got close! Bloody wild horse at times that fella. Can anyone remember the day he was all over track in the underwood, universal prince kaapstad way and sky heights all coming at him, and all he wanted to do was run about trying to intimidate and bump and bite them.
Much better horse when he ran straight with no blinkers, harnassed his fighting qualities a lot better so he didn't expend energy to do anything else but run.

Must admit i'm a bit of a northerly tragic, more cause the way he'd win than what he won. You can have all the heart/lung and athleticism in the world but it gets chucked out the window when you're racing a fighter that just won't give up no matter what you throw at em.

I noticed the other day when he won 5 in a row in 2002, he won his first 4 races by a total margin of 1.1 length and his 5th by 1 length...he was either very lucky or had a lot of fight. (Im tipping the latter considering he lumped 58kg + each time)

Didnt Oliver tell the trainer to take the blinkers off as he refused to let a horse past him if he could see them?

Favourite Cox Plate is where he forced his way past Sunline.

Yeah something like that. I remember the first time i realised that quality in him was the St George at Caulfield when Old Comrade was wide out and hit the front with 150 to go - too early - cause it gave Northerly the chance to spot him in his line of vision with blinkers on, and he kicked back and won. Next start Kersley didn't take the blinkers off in the Aust Cup and Harvey said he'd be holding his run till as late as possible next time, to minimise Northerly's reaction time once he sees him. He hit the front right in the shadows and just got there, but you could just see Northerly kicking and give it another 50m he'd have won. Great ride by Harvey that day.
