So just because his junior record sounds like Boltons he is a dud? Have you even checked out Hanson stats? Have you even seen him play? they are all there to at vic footy. I dont recall Bolton ever being descibed as one of the best contested marks to come out of the draft.
I am not saying he is certain to make it but then no one else in the draft is either. What you can say is that given just about everyone has him rated as a top five pick so he is a better than average chance og being more than a Mark Bolton. Trust me he isnt simply a slow backman.

okay then.

With Fletcher, Michael, McPhee, Bradley, Laycock, Lucas, Lloyd, Johns and Ryder (hopefully) all in our best 22 for the next two seasons - what position would he play ?
Notwithstanding we have Lee and Neagle still developing.

Will he be a good AFL player ?
By all accounts - yes.

Does he have a role to play at Essendon ?
In my opinion. No.

I think i was against us going after him earlier in the year, but this has made my day. Heard it on the radio on the way home from work - cue me giggling like a schoolgirl for about 2 minutes. Initially i didn't even hear it properly, and was wondering "Michael who?".

Still have to wonder about his desire, and how this impacts the development of someone like Lee. I think it'll be good for Keps though.

Most of all i love the move. It's Essendon one step ahead of the rest, just like we've always been.

Amazing news...just goes to show that the rats want to leave the sinking Brisbane ship. All that stuff Mal was saying about wanting to play part-time is probably bull********.

At frist I was little apprehensive,
but now I'm looking forward to him playing for Essendon..BUT I wouldn't of picked him up with our FIRST PICK!

Prob their only choice though,
Atleast we can now look at some midfielders :)

Brisbane board is fuming...nothing but hatred posts!

If Brisbane couldn't give what he wanted and a Victorian club could,
then so be it. He said in his interview on Sen that he wanted to go back to Melb not long after..

Brisbane want to take 'any action possible'...
on AFL website.

Good news on Mal. I hope we do the right thing now at the draft tomorrow and pick Gumby at pick 2 and a couple of quick midfielders, Kracouer and Armitage, at picks 18 and 20.

Pick 35 Jarrad Allen
Pick 42 Bachar Houli
Pick 47 Mark Austin

great news. about time we got someone who wants to play for us. this will really strengthen our back line and would be a great replacement if fletcher missus a game because of injury. may also allow fletcher to play chb.

who would you prefer at chb? michael of fletcher?

Fletcher to CHB

Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy has already forecast a shift further up the field for his brilliant defender Dustin Fletcher, following the Bombers shock decision to coax Brisbane's triple premiership winning defender Mal Michael out of retirement.

The Bombers announced on Friday they would select Michael - who announced his retirement just six weeks ago despite having another year to run on his Brisbane contract - with the second pick at the December 12 NAB AFL pre-season draft.

The move has been bitterly opposed by Brisbane with the Lions filing an official complaint to the AFL with the league announcing an investigation late on Friday.

However Essendon is already anticipating being given the all-clear to secure Michael and Sheedy is already anticipating having arguably the two best key defenders of the past five years together in the one backline.

But when asked whether his dual premiership winning full-back Fletcher or Michael would be his first choice full-back next year, Sheedy was adamant what set-up would best suit the Bombers.

"Fletcher will play centre-half-back and Mal will play full-back," Sheedy said.

"I have already spoken to Fletcher (who for years has longed for a move away from full-back) and he is really happy, he can’t get in here quick enough."

Essendon captain Matthew Lloyd, a long-time opponent of Michael's, is also thrilled with the Bombers coup in snaring a man he rates extremely highly.

"To be honest he is the best full-back I have played on along with (Carlton's Stephen) Silvagni early in my career," he said.

"If I got four goals on those guys I was happy and I wasn't if I only kicked four when I was on someone else."

"We have probably broke even over the time but I am very excited to have him here."

Sheedy said Michael, a 201 game veteran who is still just 29, would be a huge addition for the Bombers.

"We think he can be a very important player for us for at least the next couple of years," Sheedy said.

"He will provide us with some real strength and experience in defence while we continue to develop some of our younger players for key defensive roles."

"Physically he is in very good condition and the time away has freshened him up mentally."

Essendon chief executive said Michael's age, even when compared to Fletcher who has carried the Bombers defence for more than a decade, made him an exciting recruiting proposition.

"The thing that appealed to us is Mal is two years younger than Dustin Fletcher and Dustin Fletcher has had two of his best years in the last two years," Jackson said.

"Mal seems as though he is older than 29 but he has got a good few years in him yet and what he does for the structure of our backline with Dustin, (Adam) McPhee and (Nathan) Lovett-Murray is we think it changes the whole dymanic of our defence."

"So why wouldn’t we chase this guy if we thought there was any doubt about him wanting to play again."

Actually nothing like it. Turner agreed to terms with the GC and then changed his mind and wanted to stay simply because he was getting a game in first grade. He has stated he agreed to go to the GC because he wasnt in first grade with Melbourne and he thought he could be playing first grade with the Titans. But none of this is really relevant for this board other than to say it is completly different to the Mal Micheal case.

Please let me make one thing perfectly clear to you Ant...
(As a 34 year member of Essendon and also a member of Melbourne Storm, you omitted to say he SIGNED NOTHING. Signing nothing but agree to terms doth NOT make him Titans property.

Now, conversely, Mal Michael was under contract to Brisbane Liars. His actions may very well cause problems with Michael coming to Essendon, though I would welcome his toughness.

Holy Snappin @rseholes!! What a turn up.

happy to have him:thumbsu:

Wouldn't suprise me if carlton stuffed us.

No thanks don't need washed up 29 year olds that can't train and are over the hill. Would rather develop a young kid. This will put your club back by 3 years, bad move i think. Trust me cause we did this in the 90's and have finally learnt our lesson.
