As for Mal as mentioned above I think the concern is about his commitment rather than concerns about his reduced training programme. And for Braddy i think it best to realise that managers work in mysterious ways and are obligated to try to get the best deal they can. Some seem to use the press to do that. Makes their player look less than loyal but I don't believe it is anything but a manager's manipulations.

Where did you get that I was defending them? Jeez you really decide what my thoughts are even if they aren't what I post. I merely pointed out to Campbell that they ARE just pawns when it comes to positioning the team and negotiating contracts. Happens in all businesses not just footy. I ain't shedding no tears for them. They are all adults (young though some are) and they make their choices.

I worked in the music industry for a number of years and whilst our boys make physical and time sacrifices, it is nothing to what you have to give up for a recording contract.

I've been missing out...

On the Gold Coast we get the Brisbane stations *and* the northern NSW ones - so we get 9/4 (NBN) for 9, 7/3 (Prime) for 7, 10/8 (which comes up just as 10 on the screen) for 10 and of course 2 and 6 (sbs). Can be very helpful during daylight savings season!

Which is useful when they are showing a finals game on 8 and a movie on 10

But that's the answer POBT. The market dictates what they are paid so that means that it's pretty much right. The question of whether that amount is representative of their value to society is a different kettle of fish that I believe that LL was trying to avoid.

A very economic rationalist answer! The market is the driver for price. It is also one way of establishing worth.

But I would suggest that it is not necessarily "right". There are many other ways of establishing worth and that is the question I was asking - whether people thought AFL footballers were underpaid or overpaid.

Market forces set the price for a lot of things but that doesn't mean that it is right. Sometimes, society insists that the market be distorted to reflect other principles such as fairness, equality and social worth. This market (for players' services) is distorted by artificial mechanisms. The "market" has not dictated price (ie wages) because there is a salary cap, there is an obligation to pay a minimum wage and being willing to pay the price doesn't get you around the trade rules. These are in place because society values something that cannot be achieved in the market (ie an even competition).

Right now, Chris Judd is arguably getting underpaid because if there was no market constraints, Collingwood might have tripled his current wage.

I posted this on the Victorian Lions forum and I'll post it here too.

I seem to be going against the grain here, but we really need to get rid of Mal.

He's been an absolute rock for us in our glory years but he obviously hasnt got the ticker for it anymore.

The last 8 rounds of this season he was the absolute picture of "going through the motions.” He is absolutely over the game. The only reason he would stay on next year would be for the money, and if someone is staying only for money, they are only going to train and play hard enough to hold their spot and get their match fees.

We wont get value for the $350,000 we will pay him if he stays next year.

He wont be around next time we play finals and the only other reason we would have to keep him around is so our young defenders learn from him, but if he is just going through the motions, then they aren’t going to learn much.

If we can get him to agree to terminate the contract, or even better, agree to a trade, I’d go for it.

An extra 350,000 worth of breathing space in the cap would be very handy, part of it can be used to retain Bradshaw.

Brown will play FF next year, and Clark should be given a decent crack at CHF.

Then we can still have some experienced players down back in the form of Johnson, Bradshaw and Lappin. I also think merrett should be given a decent run at FB.

dont see why Mal cant just wait til he retires, then he'll ahve 50 years to do whatever he wants.

Once honest again I don't think an individual should be bigger than the club, & unfortunately if push comes to shove, then it looks like another trade happening.

If given the choice between Braddy & Mal, well Braddys last few games of the years the 1 man forward like versus Mals well is it over yet?
You be the judge. In a perfect world I would love both to stay.

PS. Do ppl realise the average wage of an AFL player is up to $250k.......
If anyone the rookies should be the ones given some compassion on the wage front.

I am not so sure that this is such a provocative post TBD. You are stating an obvious point that the club will have discussed. If Mal is tired of the game I suspect he will give it away on his own volition. Only he knows if he is ready for another year. I have no doubt that the club is giving him some time to make his mind up but maybe not that long as trade time is nearly here. I think that you may be underrating Mals last few games though. Yeah he did look to be going through the motions but his motions are far from bad. Also what if the internal shenanagins have had an influance on him. A clearing of the air may be the tonic he needs. Time will tell. Good thoughtful post.

I'm stuck agreeing 100%. After watching the games after his "announcement" it was patently obvious that he really didn't care whether he was out there or not. If someone doesn't want to be out there, they're going to be playing below that of someone who actually has a desire to get out there and stay out there.

The only thing I can add to TBD and John's post is that the off-season is a very good time to reassess your priorities. I'm not willing to write Mal off just yet. I understand that this is not a new thing for Mal, questioning his own desire to commit fully. My gut feeling has come 180 on this - I have a feeling that he may see 2007 as a challenge.

When all the speculation first started to occur in the media Mal's playing went way down. It was obvious that he didn't have a clue about his future but then once he had gotten the reduced number of days proposal out in the open his game lifted. IF he can stay commited and realises that it is not his time to retire just yet, if he remembers that passion in the offseason and so forth then he should play again next year. I simply hope that this is the final outcome. If his heart is not in it and ihe would just reproduce games like those in his lull then he should not be playing for the lions anymore.
