One thing you can say- Spain, like England, is getting really tight below the top three as there seems to be at least a dozen or so teams of roughly equal quality. Didn't Real Madrid get a similar hiding at home to Real Mallorca last season?!?

Rijkaard must be feeling pretty insecure now, knowing how demanding the Barcelona fans are. And especially since recent lack of success seems to be dragging the ferals out at the Nou Camp.

That's what you get for signing Rijkaard as a coach, splashing cash on anywhere but the defence and general **** poor management.

Ahh Barcelona...no chance for many a years to come

And the current Primera Liga table after 14 rounds:

1.Real Madrid- 30
2.Valencia- 28
3.Deportivo La Coruña- 27
4.Atletico Osasuna- 23
5.Atletico Madrid- 22
6.Athletic Bilbao- 21
7.Real Mallorca- 20
8.Villareal- 20
9.Racing Santander- 20
10.Real Valladolid- 20
11.Malaga- 20
12.Barcelona- 20
13.Sevilla- 18
14.Real Zaragoza- 16
15.Real Betis- 15
16.Celta Vigo- 15
17.Real Sociedad- 15
18.Albacete- 13
19.Murcia- 10
20.Espanyol- 8

And to think that two of Spain's representatives in the CL are hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone  Not to mention, the fact that there are no less than SIX teams on 20 points and a mere three points separates 4th from 12th. I wonder how will it pan out as the season goes- let's brace ourselves for a real rollercoaster ride! :D

How do Bilbao do it? With their self-imposed transfer restrictions their continual survival and relative success in arguably the world's strongest league defies belief.

I think it's down to an excellent youth policy, and yes it is remarkable what they've been able to accomplish. The influence of the traditional Basque pastime of pelota explains why many great goalkeepers have come from that region.

It's very sad that Julen Guerrero isn't the player he could have been, or the player he once was when he was younger. What a tragedy :(

What factors do you think have enabled the leagues in England and Spain to be so closely fought, at least below the top three? Could it be that both leagues really do have a large number of teams on an even level, or is it because these leagues have become unpredictable as any team is capable of beating the other on a good day.
