Review Malcolm Blight - Last Touch Rule, Interchange Cut, 20m Goal Square

If it's the last possession out of bound rule that the SANFL have, it works well. It's only awarded if it's off a clear boot or handpass. If in doubt, it's a throw in. If shepherded out, it's a throw in. Players deliberately getting the ball onto an opposing boot for a free doesn't happen.
Fair enough, thanks.

FFS, it’s not last touch, it’s last disposal out of bounds.
Back off, mate --- this is how it was described in the opening post of the thread:
"AFL legend Malcolm Blight will propose that the AFL seriously look at the ‘‘last touch’’ out of bounds rule".

Save your exasperation and language for Bicks, not me, ok? o_O

As an aside, here are all the AFL changes I could find from1990 to 2017 (mostly from here - http://www.afl.com.au/afl-hq/the-afl-explained/rule-changes-18582013 which shows 1858-2013), and I think everyone can agree they aren't all terrible:
Lots of good rules.

I note that in the last 5 years, there's lots of "We're going to interpret the rule better" or "stricter" or whatever.

Bullshit. it's not a rule if it's not clear and we can just say... "well, it's the same rule but a BIT MORE THIS YEAR, SO WATCH OUT!".

Sort your shit afl, that's exactly the problem.

So many mangled stoppages one after the other. So many free kicks for things that aren't readily visible to the crowd. It's a bit of a confusing mess for newcomers
For a minute I thought you were talking about Rugby Union, or even Gridiron (which has 4 x 15 minute quarters and goes for 3-4 hours  ). :D
Aussie Rules is like draughts to their chess.

because there are a bunch of douchebags calling the game
Since you mentioned it --- in the first quarter of the PA v Richmond game the Ch7 twerps mentioned Richmond's loss to Adelaide.
BT rambled on about "when Adelaide were playing better back then" (yeah, after folding to Essendon the game before) and "had a full side" (not quite) and "Round One, I think".
Great preparation, Brian.
From memory, wasn't that just about the best game JJ played? :'(

If you drop the ball in a tackle and you've had prior opportunity (eg. taken on a tackler, tried a fend off/side step), it should be holding the ball. None of this "ball was knocked free/spilled out" rubbish. If you didn't kick it or handball it, you're done.
This!
If the player has time to attempt the fend, turn/spin/side-step, or is attempting to raise his arms so they're free after the tackle, should ALL be HTB.
Likewise when a player takes possession and then just braces for the oncoming tackle. More often than not it's just a time-waster. If an opponent takes possession, the point of tackling is not to dispossess or create a bounce; it's to nab them with the ball and get the free.

Don’t be so sensitive.
My post was in reply to your total lack of understanding of what the rule actually is and how it works. It’s got nothing to do with how the opening post misrepresents the rule, I’ve covered that previously.

“Plenty of time will be wasted (as with goal referrals) to see who touched the ball last from a congested pack, when it's not clear who touched the ball last.
Players will use the rule unfairly to push the ball onto oppo players' bodies and legs, then out, to get the free kick.”

1) Don’t be so sensitive.

1) My response to your starting a discussion with "FFS" is reasonable. We don't know each other. We're not mates. It's my way of saying "Mate, if you can't be polite to me, don't reply. Hit IGNORE."
however
2) you're right. I didn't understand that Blighty's suggestion was in line with SANFL and AFLW use. Fair enough.
This was amusing, from that article:
"Blight said there was too much emphasis on tackling in today’s AFL, calling it ‘‘the most overrated thing in our game,’’ adding, ‘‘with 36 players (around the ball), you can’t help but get 10 tackles. You trip over a bloke.’’"
There's now a rule about that, too! ;)

A small change, but take away the 15m rule for marking. The more marks the quicker the ball can clear congestion.
Not to mention that at the moment, 15m varies hugely depending on where on the field the ball is and what stage of the game it is, and that 15m when kicking is about half as long as 15m when running and bouncing.

7 needs better commentators, less herpa derpa, and better Friday night fixtures.
Anyone will tell you Ling is awful, so bring in a decent special comments person with some semblance of intellect.

Get rid of Basil Fawlty as painful to listen to.

Bring in someone like Jason Bennett who intelligently calls the game as it is.

Tell BT that the game isn't about him & stop adding too much mayo, as he used to be ok when he just called the game.

Yeah right

Sub rule
Interchange cap
Goal review
Ruck nomination rule
Deliberate rushed behind*
Sliding rule*
Prior opportunity*
10m exclusion zone*
Relaxation of dropping/holding the ball*
Advantage decided by player*
Deliberate out of bounds*

*bad because umpired incorrectly/poorly

Looks like the first move will be a 6 - 6 - 6 set up for centre bounces in 2019.

Great list. Add
Deliberate rushed point*
30s shot clock yet 10s for defenders kicking out, which often forces them to go long to a CONTEST

Congestion at centre bounce I don't believe is an issue. Look at the Melbourne v Essendon game I think it was a few weeks back, with high number of goals in the first half. Not too much congestion as it re-set to centre bounce after each goal. The issue is ball ups around the ground. I think this won't address the issue.

Call the rules as they stand verbatim for a season and see what happens. The idiots will be surprised...

Stuff that I'd like to see ...

- 6 on the bench and unlimited interchanges
- starting zones at centre bounces only (6-6-6) and I'd force the wings to start level with the centre
- destroy the 3rd man up ruck rule completely
- clock stops when mark / free is paid - starts again at play-on / disposal (might need to reduce quarter length to 15mins + time on)
- circle from point post to point post instead of goal square for kick-ins - ie a goal circle - also allow rushed behinds under pressure inside the circle.
- last disposal out of bounds rule - maybe allow a kick to touch from inside defensive 50m to outside defensive 50m
- get rid of video score review, put a goal umpire on each goal post
- 17-5 fixture
