Malcolm Blight did represent Victoria pre State of Origin days. I think he may have even been the Victorian captain on a couple of occasions!

I think Blight played seven games for both South Australia and Victoria. I haven't yet traced all the interstate goals he kicked.

In relation to playing finals, I forgot to mention that Blight played 21 finals and kicked 35 goals, all for North Melbourne.

He did captain the Vics against SA, and it was one of the major drivers for the introduction of State of Origin. I remember the commentators were continually pointing how ridiculous it was during thr telecast.

There were some follow-up articles in the papers - it really kicked off the SOO push.

In my opinion, Pre State of Origin games should be reclassified interleague games.

This bloke was an absolute freak and comfortably sits in the top 5 footballers I have ever seen.

How many players have won a Brownlow Medal as a ruck rover and then went on to win the Coleman Medal?

Only the great Gary Ablett senior shades him for flexibility and mercurial brilliance.

Blight had it all. Carey, Matthews and Ablett snr are the only players I rate ahead of him.

I have a vague recollection that Victoria once named a first ruck against South Australia of Craig McKellar, Blight and Ray Huppatz. They were all Woodville boys, born 18 months apart.

Long time ago - don't trust my memory.

Does anyone have any additional info on Blight's interstate career which may fill in the blanks?

Blight's 33 goals enabled him to top Woodville reserves' goal kicking that season.
Blight played two further games for Woodville reserves in rounds 14 and 15 of 1970, but the "Adelaide Advertiser" did not print reserves goal kickers that season.

How many players have won a Brownlow Medal as a ruck rover and then went on to win the Coleman Medal?

Bernie Quinlan.

Have my doubts whether either of Blight or Quinlan played as a ruck-rover during their respective Brownlow years; Blight boosted his goal kicking total by 53 goals in 1978 over the previous season, while getting 100 less disposals across the season as well, and Quinlan also kicked 46 goals more during his Brownlow year of 1981 than he had in the year prior. If anything, those numbers would indicate that moving away from a ruck-roving role into the forward line may have been the difference (unless I'm way off, and ruck-rovers were prone to sudden +50 goal jumps between seasons back then).

I have discovered recently that Blight played senior cricket for Woodville in Adelaide district cricket competition in 1970-71. Would anybody happen to know what his stats were?
