[/B]Mick responded to the question...if Primus was outed would you be interested in the power job. Answer....NO
Wants to stay in Melbourne for family reasons. Mick gave some excellent dialogue on the Power's dilemma mainly due to finishing low down when key draft picks designed to replenish rebuilding clubs have gone to new clubs. He believes that this may cause some sides like Port to struggle for longer than they normally would.
Very good interview and worth a listen:thumbsu:

Scully and Ablett said no before they were offered bucketloads too.

But was always a long shot

I don't think Malthouse will come but if anyone in their right mind, despite Mick wanting to or not, thought he would say yes to that question you are either incredibly naive or just not very bright.

They don't do that to each other in the coaches fraternity.

I've heard MM mention before that he would never enter a club after it got rid of a coach mid-season. He doesn't believe that is the right thing for clubs to do.

But thank God that idea can now be put to bed.

I don't think we'll get Malthouse, but James Hird spent months saying he didn't want to coach Essendon yet. Just sayin'.

Thanks for the link macca...

Sounds like that he wont be coaching in the near future.

What I took out of this interview was how he mentioned that clubs like Melbourne, Richmond and us have been denied of good quality draft picks because of the introduction of GWS and GC.

I had thought of that when the AFL mentioned these two new clubs.

I am going to assume that all of us here have seen of the movie Moneyball about the drafting system in Baseball in the US on how a recruiter used a guys stat's formula (enter REH)......to win record 20 games in row

If we are struggling to pick good quality draft picks, do we need to take on board this type of statistics formula to pick players that is required to build that winning team.

For example: You dont need to be ten foot tall forward to be an accurate kick at goal.......who fits this role and who has in the past.....Ebert and Dew springs to my mind.

I see a huge resemblance in us and the Oaklands Baseball at the time when they were on their knee's competing against clubs with the big bucks.

If you haven't seen it, check it out, it provides another perspective on recruiting.

Three years ago Mark Harvey stated that any club with a list that needed regeneration should do so immediately because of the impact of the concessions to the new franchise clubs.
As is now scarily obvious, he was right.

Fremantle then proceeded with a major list rebuild while the talent was available.

Port have missed the boat I think.

yea nah. Without looking into it I'm guessing Port had higher picks than Fremantle in those years and probably have the better players.

I think maybe the Bulldogs and the Saints and maybe Brisbane were the only teams hurt by the new clubs coming in.

I don't know if we missed the boat, it all depends on what we needed at that time. Our recruiting has been not bad. However at the time when Mark Harvey (coach anyone??) we weren't in the best position on the ladder to get a good draft pick.....

So I guess, if you work by the draft system and show that you dont tank as much then you will be rewarded...........should I dare say...lets tank it.....is it worth to tank this year?

Those comments from Malthouse on AA pretty much confirm my feeling as per my posts last week that we are very little chance of enticing him over.

If we can't get Malthouse full time, I'd be content with him coming to the club in an advisory role over the off-season - it would do the players wonders if they knew that Primus (or whoever is coaching us next year) is standing next to Mick at training sessions and imparting his knowledge. An endorsement of sorts.

if i were port i would throw a lot of money at Malthouse (maybe even Leigh Matthews) to be a pre season consultant for the coming pre season, we have a list of players on the brink of breaking out. they need that big push. 2-3 days a week in pre season for a couple of months with Malthouse and Leigh will open the players, coaches and clubs eyes. Can only dream....

Harvey was right on that one hence we recruited heavily in 2008 and 2009.

maybe a bit off topic but wasn't matthews brought in last season on that panel of 10 to decide the new coach? i know you are not talking about the same thing but i wonder if he genuinely thought too that primus was best man for the job.

I dont think Port missed the boat Before GC and GWS came in, not totally anyway.

In 2006 Port recruited heavily and got guys like Boak, Gray, Westoff and Krakouer. They also got Rodan in the PSD.

2007 they didnt recruit alot considering they made the top 4.

2009 was when they recruited heavily and traded agressively. They had 8,9 and 16 but traded out shaun Burgoyne.

I really have no idea what your point is but FYI we recruited "heavily" in 08/09 as we delisted a paddock of obvious spuds and had some decent draft picks through our lowly finishes. Port have had just as heavy a list turnover as Fremantle, difference being Freo still had a core of elite senior players to build around and have done very well from the rookie list.

Also, implying that Mark Harvey is the second coming of Nostradamus by predicting that GWS and GC would rape the draft? lol. You'd get longer odds predicting the sun will come up tomorrow.
