Malthouse: one-on-one

Ben Broad 8:40 AM Fri 06 November, 2009
Has the coach had a break and if so, what did you do?
I'm having one later. I'll just have a couple of weeks off, as all our coaches do. It's good to freshen up. What do you do? Some do some travel … I'll just be around.

Pretty candid interview, enjoyable read

Highlights
Has already set down the law in regards to didak and davis, both have been told they need to perform against the best

Swan was injured from about round 18

The club as a whole believes the draft this year is weak

Disappointed about Ball but does not want free agency

when asked about playing all 3 rucks, he mentioned Josh can play ruck rover/HFF

Like i said pretty candid and enlightening interview

Interesting read.

I'm resigned to the fact that Fraser will be in our best 22 in a non rucking role now :(

I don't think we could have Fraser in said role and keep carrying Leigh Brown though.

Well he did say the best 22 is open slather for round 1

Like nate competes with leigh and presti and reid etc. Good way of looking at it

He said it's open slather, but if Fraser isn't injured, I have zero doubt he'll be in there in some role.

Basically, for team balance, Jolly would be replacing a tall player, surely. If it's not Fraser it'd have to be Leigh Brown imo. We're not exactly the quickest side going around, and we've got the Dogs up first as well.

Fraser is no CHB

Leigh isnt a good one but he could at least semi play there

Also speed is over rated, st.kilda are slow geelong not much faster

IMO we wont play all 3 rucks and it will be dawes/rus/3rd tall forward that misses

Youd think N. Brown and Reid will have their chance to prove themselves during the preseason matches. IMHO N. Brown will be ahead of L. Brown from the start of the season(due to Jolly and Fraser both playing) and Reid will get many games(im not too sure Presti will play all 22+ games).
Also read an article about his thoughts on free agency. He mentioned all the pros and cons, hes been around for a long time and has experienced many changes since the 60s & 70s through to now.

Yeh, but imo, Jolly shouldn't be coming into the side for a small, we'd just be too top heavy.

If he played Wood, Jolly, Fraser and leigh Brown all in the same team I can see that being a problem.

It's not just speed as well, but competing at ground level (I know every will say Fraser is as good at ground level as any big man in the game, but I don't think he is anymore).

I'd rather keep Leigh Brown in the team for structural reasons, as he can play CHB and Fraser can't, as you pointed out. However, if Fraser isn't going out of the side, Leigh Brown would be high on my list of 'outs' for Jolly, especially for Round 1 against the Dogs.

I more got the impression that Fraser would be a back-up to Jolly and would be playing some other roles around the ground. I think Wood is the one in trouble. Leigh Brown will be competing with Nathan Brown and Reid. When he said he could play all three in the team he was a bit ambiguous and philosophical about it - like it could happen but they'd have to prove it to him.

"Yep, we missed the aim but it's the effort to get there. If any Collingwood supporters out there didn't have some joy during the year, then they're very, very miserable people."

I thoroughly enjoyed the read......... and cannot help but wonder who he would be referring to LOL

glad there wasnt an attempt to get nicoski, mcphee clone with even worse decision making skills.

i love the way he repeats the questions, always on the front foot! (and gives him time to think of an answer).

It's now official, Mick Malthouse reads Football Forums, because how else would he know about the "disenchanted" supporters like Understudy and Dnine.:eek:

explains why he stank in the finals :(
Yeah and sadly wasnt our worst player in finals, i did like he openly threw the gauntlet down to didak, davis, fraser et al

yeah thats what i understood too

What about your list? Have you got any players that are going to have slower starts to pre-season?
There will be a couple. Nick Maxwell had his knee looked into but he shouldn't be too far away.

Josh Fraser hasn't had an operation but is still recovering from his knee. Young (Luke) Rounds is having his legs done and it'll be some weeks before he gets back, and the same with Tristan Francis. He'll be operated on and won't be really running until late December. But by and large, it's a fairly healthy list

Did not Know that and would be in Doubt for NAB Cup Games

yeah your post on nicks was bullshit thats cool mate

Speed decided the GF IMO. Impossible to over rate on that basis. Nothing else counts nmore than what decides grand finals. Ball sits on the pine and St. Kilda recruit Lovett post season. Ross Lyon rates speed IMO.

Very interesting and informing article.
Typical straight to the point, honest Malthouse.

Not the Machiavellian mystery he is made out to be by his hard core detractors.

I might be a minority but I find him hilarious. Most of his word games are just ways of only saying what he wants to say.
