not too fussed aswell
never really cared what Mick had to say, good coach but he has a lot of senior moments...but the swiss comments, BURN HIM!!! :p

The EJ facts speak for themselves. Mick is just trying to get noticed in the cut throat AFL media world. Didn't quite work for him this time. I'm sure there will be a lot more crap from him in the media next year.

EJ is a legend and half the things Mick had to say proved he didnt know sh1t about him. Did he play enough games? umm 321 If im not mistaken, premiership side, best and fairest 29 times ect ect.. (dont quote me though cbf double checking this but would not be far off)
Thanks for then link I just went from respecting a good coach to hating a former good coach! he can go get you know what..

Not too fussed. It seems old age has got to Mick, possibly because he hasnt been in the media too often lately let his guard down. Especially considering he didn't know/remember EJ won a premiership.

Absolute joke, yeah Mick, and I could've coached West Coast to flags in the early 90s with the team they had.

He cost us getting into the 85' grand final by bad moves...

Taking the piss - he said "he thought he remembered Ted may have been a premiership play in... 1953" clearly he is having a giggle, probably because it was such an inane question.

Not a very funny giggle, but still - Mick has never been accused of having a sense of humour.

Very strange comment from Mick. Barrassi and Bartlett are great football names but even they pale in comparison to Whitten. You don't get nicknamed Mr. Football and get the biggest State funeral in Melbourne's history if you aren't a football legend.
That's just silly Mick...

Yeah agree with above silly comment and not too fussed. Says more about Mick than EJ

Hi Guys,

Sorry to intrude I just thought that you would like to see and hear what Mick Malthouse thinks of the great EJ - Now although I am a Geelong supporter I am related to EJ and find this disrespectful.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CqCRDHKO9k

What I find more disrespectful is that if it's true that you're related to EJ , you follow a different team..

Shame shame shame...

just kidding :p

Wasn't Ron Barrassi the one who dubbed Ted "Mr Football"?

then Whitten dubbed Barrassi "Mrs Football"?

To make a statement like that I'm guessing you're quite young. The ONLY one of EJ's are who could even hold a candle to him was Bobby Skilton.

Are you talking about just their playing ability, or as an all-encompassing legend of the game?

Barassi's record both as a player and a coach takes a fair bit of beating.

Barassi's record both as a player and a coach takes a fair bit of beating.
Barassi's record as a player is inflated by the fact that he played most of his career with very strong Melbourne teams and when coaching Carlton and North Melbourne, both sides had very strong lists and simply bought players they needed.
When he coached Sydney and Melbourne, when both had poor lists, his record was hopeless.
For the most part EJ Whitten was a champion in mostly very average to poor sides and as captain-coach of a good to average team in 1961, he took that team to a Grand Final and whilst losing that game they were in front at half time.
It's always worthwhile examining the facts before making broad statements.
Bobby Skilton from South Melbourne is the only one who even comes close to EJ Whitten as a player.

You're just talking about that era though, surely?

There are modern day players that surpass those two guys.

Don't compare eras. It's a waste of time and effort. Footballers were part-timers who left the pub half an hour before the game in Whitten's day. You only compare the greats under equal conditions. I.e., you compare Whitten to Skilton, or Carey to Ablett but not Whitten to Carey. In the 50s a modern day Carey would have spent most of the game unconscious, in the 90s an old days Whitten would have been out of petrol by the end of the first quarter. The game was different, training was different, life was different hell even food and nutrition was different.
