OLLINGWOOD coach Mick Malthouse has turned radio commentator in an unprecedented move by an AFL coach. Spruiked as a major coup by SEN, Malthouse has signed to commentate on 13 games, starting with the season-opener between Carlton and Richmond on March 25.

I understand he may be thinking about life after being head coach however never thought media would be his thing.

Can only be a good thing for his coaching of us too.
As the article states he will be watching some of the better sides first hand a few times.

Very innonvative from Mick, and i agree with Jie Hodge in that it could be a huge benefit to his coaching as well. Any additional analysis that he can obtain for opposition sides is only going to assist the Pies.

Going to be very insightful.

I imagine that Mick will be familiar with the tactics of opposition teams already.

I thought Mick despised the media? It seems strange he'd voluntarily choose to go into commentating.

Would have thought he could do that at home on a big screen tv or go live.

Typical contradiction of Mick - neither fish nor fowl

A real nowhere man and should stand down immediately for Bucks.

Let's start a campaign...right here...right now.

IIRC Mick was a special comments man for a finals series (maybe just the GF) a few years back - I recall being pretty underwhelmed to be honest.

Do you ever read the paper? Buck's has said on numerous occasions that he's not ready to coach a senior side, what part of not being ready don't you understand? After two years in the system he will be.

Coaches watch other teams play and to get the best view it's done live. So Mick will be talking about the tactics within a handfull of games, it's not a big deal but it won't stop the haters from trying to turn it into one.

They will fail again.

Bucks was just being political.

He is as ready as he needs to be at nearly 40 years of age.

He was responding to a snipe at him from the mad one. You clearly missed the subtlety....

Seems to me you're calling the great man a liar. Actually honesty is one of Buck's best traits. He'll coach us in two years and when he's ready, there's no subtlety to be deciphered, only an idiot would come to your conclusion. Thank god our board are immune to the destructive ideas of so called supporters who don't have the clubs best interests at heart.

Maltie's coaching us for the next two years so give your wet dream a rest, It'll eat you up inside if you don't.

I daresay there is a sizeable difference between a special comments man on a televised game and a journalist who is trying to get a story or a quote in which to make one from. Not quite sure Mick has much against commentators who are purely describing the action and trying to give insight.

Living in WA, I watched Malthouse handling the media during his years at the Eagles..He cultivated a savage outlook in media conferences to scare the Perth media poopless.... cos once the local media sniff a few rumours, they really zero-in on an interstate coach. You only have to look at the Freo coaches to learn that. Damien Drum and Chris Connolly tried to play friends with the media over here and they were shredded meat after a short honeymoon. Mick learned early on that it was kill or be killed.....

Actually, I think he's been pretty relaxed since his return to Melb. He gives a few stares to the media but nothing of the intimidation that he showed to them over here.

I think the prob with Mick in the media is that he takes 20 minutes to say something that should be said in 2 minutes...

That sort of flies in the face of his first game between Tigers & the cheats.:p

He needed the equivalent of a under 10's game to get used to the commentary box

*No offense to under 10 football*

Is he doing any Hawthorn games?

"Mick, what do you think of this rolling zone the Hawks are implementing?'
"Rolling what? How the **** should I know? Just chip it around the boundary line, that'll probably break it up"

I got a feeling this will be pretty sterile commentary.

Mick is far too smart to give too much away
