I actually thought McCarthy is more like the Ben Reid type
McCarthy would be the more athletic of the two, but I'd rather Carlton free Watson up and his left foot to be our designated kicker. Like Reid, I feel Watson's strength will be playing as a an attacking defender who read the plays and intercepts to beat his man. In the finals, Reid didn't get into body on body contests with Kennedy, but played off him and avoided one on one contests, Similar to Fletcher who can be done and ragdolled by power forwards. We're fortunate that Watson is also a man mountain who Harry Taylor couldn't shift last season.

I reckon malthouse will be an amazing fit for Carlton, both ruthless in attitude and always has a drive to achieve better. I hope he really brings out the best in walker like his 2011 season. He's one player you want to see leaping onto shoulders on that Saturday afternoon grand final day
Also develop Davies and Mitchell more

Yep, exactly. Carrot and stick, which I hope Malthouse will use much more adroitly than Ratten did, and the (very) early signs are good.

Irrespective of what the reality of 2013 holds for Watson and Lucas, some public confidence now can only do them good. Same for McLean, although you'd hope the last three years would have taught him what is and isn't important at AFL level.
A bit unfair I think - There's one thing you can't criticise McLean of and that is his attitude. Despite being best on ground in the VFL week after week and then being overlooked by MC week after week, Brock didn't bitch and moan and kept plugging away until the MC had to pick him.

If Mick is a fan of McLean, it would be for his attitude and approach to football as much as anything.

For sure - completely agree. My comment wasn't intended as a criticism of McLean. I was trying to say Brock shouldn't/wouldn't need Mick to tell him he's good - he should already know his own worth, and the value of hard work and persistence in getting where he needs to go. In comparison, Watson and Lucas are probably lacking that degree of self-belief.
