I think that Essendon was guilty of trying to put on too much muscle mass in too short a time. a 2-3kg increase over the pre-season is acceptable, but we also need to watch out that people dont put on too much (see Bower in 2010 when we tried to turn him into a gorilla CHB when he is really a fast rebounding third tall) and end up with all the same issues that the bummers had this year with leg related soft tissue issues.
Was against North when Petrie kick 4 in the first quarter. Losing Walker in the first quarter meant our forward line structure was then stuffed.

Every player needs a personalised programme. The last thing you want to see is Watson any heavier. Boots on the other hand 3 or 4 kg's would be good.
Thats it really... we need to get someone who is going to personalise everyones training and dietary programs. We dont want someone like Watson or Jamison putting on too much weight too quickly but on the other hand, getting someone like Boots to put on 3-4kg with his body type might be a bit of an issue. He is going to have to consume a load of protein and do a lot of weights to utilise that protein to increase his muscle mass.

Either way, there should be some bigger stronger lads running around next year.

Funny to hear about this stuff, years ago a mate of mine turned up at the Junction Oval at 6.4 and weighed 68 kilos, never did a leg muscle in his life, put on 20 kilos in the gym in 2 years, went twang, twang, twang, and bye bye footy career.
Bet before all his issues, he was one hell of a runner? Doing long distance type stuff?

And 20kg in the gym in 2 years is a bit much really... I put on 10kg in 15 months... but then again... I am not a running type person. I'm more of your slow moving front row forward with a lot of power behind me.

This bloke was a stick insect, could kick 70 yards, had to bulk up, this is 1983 mind you so it happened real quick.

Upper body ended up huge, but had to carry a couple of stick legs, twang, twang, twang.................so he tells me.

Sounds like to much work on the beach muscles, a bit like Kelvin Templeton got too top heavy and couldn't get out on the park. You would like to think that sports science has progressed in 30 years

probably the game when Jamo went down again...

I'm having a real punt here, but it might have been the North game. Petrie was on fire and I think that's why I couldn't see the sense in wasting Hendo down back, when we had other defensive options but no forward options and he'd done reasonably well there early. I just remember being left with the impression that it was really negative and poor coaching from Ratts; whereas I'd generally been a supporter of his.

Went to a breakfast this morning and Mick was the guest speaker. He said he will be talking to the sports science guys at the club about putting 2kg to 3kg on to the players. Said he wants them to be able to be hard at the contest, and that he wants to have four or five guys who can really hurt their opponents. Sounds like Bell is safe. There was nothing else about Carlton or players we may be interested in.
If this is do-able in a season why the **** hasn't it already been done?

Because we were more interested in having speedy guys rather than guys who, when they thump into you and knock you on your ass, hurt you...

Hopefully Mick will get some of the guys more interested in hurting the opposition rather than playing tiddly winks with them.

I hope it doesn't slow us down too much. If everyone bulks up, that suggests a complete change of game plan, and that means no real chance at a flag in 2013. I'd like to see a refining of our game plan that still utilising our pace but with a harder edge defensively.

I think that some of the defenders and midfielders will bulk up a bit... if only to be able to deal with stronger attacking forwards. Too many times this year we saw our defenders being shrugged off by the forwards and mids that went forward from other sides.

If our guys can hold their own against the bigger opposition guys, then we should be ok.

Keep Brock at the same weight he is and he may feel like he can keep up with people :).

I don't know, it went OK for Adelaide.
I thought of them when posting, but they didn't win the flag. I'd also suggest they were bigger bodied than us to start with. Can't remember what game plan they were using last year to recall what changes they made.

Uh... Do you have any idea how much Bell weighs??? Or what he ran on the beep test??? :D
No, I watched his games hoping somebody would tell me ... but to no avail.

I do know how much Lucas, Simpson, Garlett, Gibbs, Curnow etc weigh though. The Crows always seemed to be a more physical side than us, a couple of 2011 games from us excepted.

I have a feeling that "Mick" will be the father figure that our team needs.

He is the man that you ultimatley have to answer to, and the man that will set a strict, disciplined standard through respect of the playing group.

Ratten was more like the lenient older brother - even though the players had grown with him and loved him, they knew that they could get away with crap and he wouldn't push them nearly as hard (i.e I dont think they feared him).

They are also contrasting characters when it comes to the media, Ratten was seen as "the nice guy" and gave the media everything they wanted to hear, whereas Mick is a hard-ass that the media respect.
