So Van Gaal said after the match that Shaw, Darmian and Blind are going to start the Spurs match.. God i hope he is bluffing because Blind is going to get bullied in the PL and the 4231 with 2 deep holding mids doesnt work if both of them are going to play as deep as they did against PSG.

Doubt he is bluffing, shit will probably hit the fan against the Spurs, having Blind at CB will be a disaster. Darmian, Smalling, Rojo and shaw should be our starting defence. Carrick, schniederlin and Hereera in midfield, mata as the no.10 and Depay and Rooney upfront.

This whole Di Maria situation is giving me the shits, wtf is Di Maria doing? Not even joining the squad, and Blanc, for like a week now has said 'deal is close'.

I'm 90% sure we won't play 4-2-3-1 with 2 deep holding mids against Spurs. It'll be 3 in midfield and hopefully Memphis and Mata on the wings.
I'm not looking forward to Blind at CB, i'd rather Rojo when he's fit. Rojo and Smalling is my preferred partnership.

And di Maria, feck off already

Maybe but surely you would play a 433 once in preseason and try Herrera behind the striker and Memphis out wide. Reminds me of last season playing 352 in preseason and starting the season with it.

Like Buckley's Jocks mentioned somewhere, i think we've used this formation because it can fit most of our players we took on tour. With Memphis i'm not sure. He may be holding him back to unleash against Spurs? Or he might play as an inside forward from LW, therefore he's developing a better understanding with Rooney up front and in central positions?

I can't see why he'd change the formation to 4-2-3-1 after we finally got the 4-3-3 going late last season when everyone had an improved understanding of the philosophy

So let's see:

INS: Depay, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Darmian, Romero.

OUTS: Falcao, RVP, Di Maria* DDG*

Di Maria and DDG both certainties in my book. So looking at this, have we actually improved the team? Midfield wise we definitely have, 2 terrific inclusions. Defence hasn't changed and our strike force has been weakened.

Fingers crossed we snap up Pedro soon.

Not really tbh. Depay and ADM are at a similar level IMO, but with Carrick, Herrera and Blind as CM's we weren't exactly weak in that area.

As good as Bastian is, I don't see why we pursued him ahead of someone like Laporte or someone else.

We have bought well for the future the last two summers.
But this summer I fear we have not made much ground.
Sure, we have thickened up the central midfield slot which may make a big difference, but the defense remains pretty same same and we just about have less spark in attack.
Pedro coming in for ADM may be a win if it occurs but grabbing a very good CB was always #1 on the wishlist.
I think 3rd at best is about where we are at.

If the right players aren't there to invest in, i'm happy to wait.
In footy terms, we don't need list cloggers.
We've been improving our squad window by window.
I'm confident after another 2 summer windows, when the manager's contract is finished, we will have a really strong squad in all areas of the pitch.
As long as we show improvement and finish 3rd or higher this season, i'll be happy

We signed Memphis because of his ability on the wings and because LVG has used him there before so we didn't really need to try him there, playing him centrally was just an experiment and LVG mentioned this before preseason even kicked off.

LVG said from day one last season that he didn't want to play 352, it was just the best fit for us at that time, eventually he dropped it for the 433 which he said from day one is his ideal formation and we had by far our most success this way. I will be absolutely amazed if we went to the trouble of adding two class midfielders only to force two of Carrick, Herrera, Bastian or Morgan to the bench tbh, I really think this 4231 was just the best way to manage game time for the players we had available.

Chevy most certainly still the sponsor.

Good riddance to Di Maria btw you soft c*ck. A cancer to our club.

Quietly confident in Pedro if I'm honest. He's extremely skilled, not far of ADM, but has has twice the work rate. Reckon this will be hugely beneficial to a career in the prem.

My lineup against Spurs, now that everything looks settled.

DDG
Darmian, Smalling, Jones, Shaw
Herrera, Carrick, Schneiderlin
Mata, Rooney, Young

Get Memphis on at the hour mark-70th minute. Schweiny for Carrick late on. Pereira/Januzaj late on
