Somebody please tell me how RVP, Rooney, Kagawa and Mata fit into the line up considering where Mata plays his best football....attacking

Roo and RvP with Mata behind and Kagawa sold back to BD in exchange for Gundogan or Reus + cash.

I like Kagawa, but he's not in the same league as Mata.

Van Persie and Rooney will be drooling at the service they'll be getting

Kagawa and Mata both came to their respective teams at a similar time, one player had a team play around him and the other hardly played.

I don't think the different between these two is as drastic as it appears, or at the very least the gap could be closer if the roles had been switched.

More interesting, do you keep the tried and trusted 4-4-2 formation.

Mata wide in a 4-4-2 is not as effective, as one of the two central midfielders he'll leave you exposed defensively.

Only concession you tend to make is 1 up front and 1 behind instead of a front two but if Mata plays behind the striker where does that leave Rooney in the short term (long term he's probably leaving).

Pages ago in this thread I wandered out loud whether United needed to change its tactical approach. It will be interesting to see if that happens.

Anyway, the football world had its foot on your throat and its just been removed with this signing IMO whichever formations you use. For me he comes into your squad as your best player and if Moyes can find a way of playing him, Rooney and RVP it its going to be hard for any defense.

I hope Mata's signing lifts the whole team and ultimately Rooney stays.

Lawyer: Boss, we can't get Mata on the latest flight to Manchester.

Ed Woodward: Send the ****ing chopper then.

I think when all players are fit it will be a 4231 with Rooney playing behind Van Persie with Mata playing on the right hand side as an inside forward and Nani/Januzaj on the left. IIRC Mata played quite a fair bit there last season with Oscar more central.

Not sure why so many people on here and on twitter are freaking out on here about where he will play.

Last year he was one of the best players in the prem playing out wide for Chelsea and I Think that's exactly where he will play for us. Oscar played centrally and hazard on the other wing. He is just as good out wide as he is centrally. I'd almost prefer him out wide as he knows how to damn well cross a ball unlike the rest of our squad barring januzaj.

He won't leave us too exposed either. Just make Rooney drop a little deeper and we can use mata as our counter-attacking outlet.

Huge step in the right direction if this does go through

I'd still keep Kagawa and use him as player swap if required for Gundogan. Definitely get rid of Young next window. That would leave us with a nice variety of players in the final third ranging from wingers and CAMs. Get Gundogan and one other CM with ball winning abilities. Move on Ando and perhaps Cleverley permanently. Get Coentrao or break bank for Shaw at LB. Lastly a good experienced CB for Rio. Ideal lineup for next season would be:

RVP
Januzaj, Rooney, Mata
Gubdogan, Carrick
Shaw, Vidic, Benatia, Rafa
de Gea

If we could pull off the Mata deal, being before the world cup, it's one less worry.

Not out wide! Played as the number 10 throughout the whole season with Oscar on the right. They obviously interchanged and all that but Mata spent 90% of his time through the middle basically doing as he pleased.

It's half the reason Oscar has excelled under Mourinho and Mata hasn't been able to recapture his 12/13 form.
