Other than the other night, I thought Murph had been going pretty good, he injured his ankle/foot the other night I think in the 2nd...plus he's the one the opposition target now which is something that he and the coaches need to work on.

Re the captaincy, he hasn't warranted some of the crticism he's getting, he's going ok, its something he will grow into as well, similar to say Swallow at North, a young gun, who has grown nto the role.
This IMO. He will grow into the role. His leadership will improve.

Sainters had him well and truely under wraps for the game. Would have been great to see him get up and about

I was mostly disgusted at the lack of anyone going up to Geary and making him earn his job.

I think we even heard Scotty in the rooms saying "Who's up for smashing Gears?" or something to that effect. Well needless to say I guess no one volunteered.

I'm sick to death of the likes of Judd and Murph being mauled and getting no help.

He is still young, I mean our past captains have been old experienced players (Koutta, Juddd). We are turning into and may have already done so, turning into a young team in the AFL. We have to give them a chance.

Murph is as old, if not older than when Judd had the captaincy.

Murph is no Judd and never will be. Players like Judd don't come around in every draft. My only hope for Murph is that he finds a bit of voice and a bit of mongrel, and I agree with T2B the lack of help from his teammates is disappointing to say the least. Waite should have saved his agro for Monday night and clocked Geary one.

Not time to panic yet, gotta remember he is following on from a giant in the game who is still in the team and no doubt has a voice the others listen to and he is learning how he fits into a new game plan from a new coach whilst battling injuries.

I agree that at times he doesn't chase hard enough when we don't have the ball but you could find footage that would damn every player in the AFL at some stages of some games in any given season. I guess we notice more now he is setting the standard for the team.

Give the kid time, he will make you proud that he leads our club.

Reading this, I agree. Getting the role of captaincy from one of the greats of the club and game, its hard.

Can't handle a tag? Doesn't work hard enough?

Watch the game against Geelong again please, the one that he was so heavily criticised for.
Even though Hunt had the better of him in the first half, by the second half Hunt was blown up, couldn't run with Murphy any more.
They had to swap different people on to Murph and Murph still impacted the game hugely in the second half.

What's with people coming out of the woodwork after a loss to point out stupid things?
Carrots would have been a great captain for a couple of years, Murph would be a great captain for twice as long or more.

And of course, everyone's forgetting that after his 4 game stint while Judd was out last year (and we happened to win a few) they were all hailing him as the "obvious" choice to succeed the great man.

Where were these doubters then?

The way people can't separate their disappointment in a single loss or performance from their attitudes and opinions of the players and the team over the long run is simply mystifying.

Exactly, there aren't many if any bar 1 player in the afl that shakes a tag early on n that's Gazza. Murph showed huge Character to keep chipping away and what do you know Hunt blew up... Had our team took it upon themselves to help the kid out a little they may have taken the wind out of his sails a little earlier and he may have had 3 great quarters instead of 2.... Last week was shitful, we are notorious for not helping our tagged players and it needs to change.

He is a jet give him time to find his feet, will lead us to 17.

Yeh got questions about murph. Continues to play half as good as in previous years. Tagging, captaincy and other factors aside I want to know what the deal is

its funny that the criticism for his lack of defensive running disappears for 3 weeks (while we're winning) and suddenly reappears once we lose.

Did notice the other night the only player to really be attempting to put on blocks for Murph was Cachia. Not good enough from the other senior boys! Anyway hope Murph pulls out a blinder this weekend against Port!

When Riewoldt does this it's due to his courage, endurance and work rate. When Murphy does it it's because he can't handle a tag.

Murph was all class today, dodgy toe and all. Probably affected his set shots, but as he got a chance to snap at goals a couple times he could largely negate that.

Annoys me that the opposition always tries to beat him up though. I know he tends to, er, exaggerate contact and what not and I'm all for a good tough hard game, but it seems he gets targeted more than anyone.
