who was the Labor candidate who thought it was a good idea to wear a Spam T shirt on the night of the election, only to follow this up with jumping on the stage and yelling out an expletive? Good start to his new career.

hopefully that's the end of Michelle on our media - now she can go back to walking Hanson Rd :D

Where she belongs :thumbsu:

Well sadly they've come out today and said they will continue to harass Mike Rann.

They need to just go away. The media has to ignore them now. The only time I ever want to see them again is on Airways after they've been offloaded from a flight :D

Looks like the factional brawl has begun with Weatherill putting his hat into the ring for Deputy Premier.

You'd think if Labor was serious about this election being a kick in the pants he'd have to get it.

Its going to be interesing. My limtied knowledge tells me the right have a strong grip on the party and see no chance of Weatherill getting up.

It seems he is going hard early in light of the fact that the key figures in the right will cop the blame for the defeat.

Weatherill seems to be talented and able and willing to be pragmatic. For me he is the right choice.

Who on the right has any credibility? surely Foley has lost all his political capital and Koutsantonis is unelectable on any measure.

Labor need to make big decisions soon about where they are headed. The afterglow of vicotory this time will be very short and they need to think abotu four years time.

Factional loyalty runs very deep though. Similar to the family wars in the Liberals.

Should be very interesting.

Weatherill actually has a chance to get up - the Labor MPs who lost their seats were all either from the Right, or unflinching Rann supporters (JLo), so the numbers could stack up.

Aside from that, the ALP Powerbrokers have to know that Rann at best has 18-24 months left in him as the Premier (at best), and after that, the cupboard is relatively bare. Foley is a good Treasurer, but, like Costello, he isn't thought of as a leadership material - and the ALP have to know that people wont vote for him; Conlon is the same, JLo is gone.

So when Rann does step down in a year or two, who do the ALP have that can replace him as Premier?

The SA ALP Factions are almost fanatical (some of them hate each other more than they hate the Libs), and are ruthless, so the question comes down to whether they're willing to be practical and put Weatherill in, even if he is from the Left, or whether they'll die by the sword and keep somebody from the Right there, even if it's likely to lose them Office.

The other thing to take into account is that Foley is unlikely to give up the Premiership without a reasonable fight.

You don't sit tight for 8 years just to give up for the good of the party when your still in government (Obviously the distinction between the Costello scenario).

FWIW in the Legislative Council

Labor 4.53 seats
Liberal 4.7 seats
Greens 0.79 seats
Family First 0.53 seats

Dignity for Disabled 0.14 seats
Democrats, Save the RAH 0.11 seats
DLP, Gamers4 Croydon 0.1 seats
Winderlich 0.08 seats
AbortSA 0.03 seats

What a fall for the Democrats - who would have thought 11 years ago they would lose pretty much their entire support (only 6742 votes).

Now for some of the shockers (those with 0.01 seats or less)
Howard Frayne with just 70 votes
Joe Carbone with 311 votes
No Desal No Dams with 393 votes
Peter Panagaris with 474 votes
Kelly Henderson with 565 votes
Joseph Williams with 630 votes
Frank Williams with 587 votes
Garry Mighall with 912 votes

The sad thing for the Democrats is that it only took one decision by Meg Lees (agreeing to pass the GST through the senate) to destroy the credibility of that party forever. Meg Lees stated that "they would never support a GST that included food", yet backflipped and voted it through the senate. At the time my mum and dad who always voted for the Democrats in the Senate said that they would never vote for the democrats ever again, judging from their results since that occurred there are obviously many others that also feel this way.

While I was too young to vote at the time Meg Lees backstabbed the party, it was always my intention to vote Democrats in the upper house when I started to vote in 2001. When Lees did that, I vowed to never vote for them and I never have.

not suprised Kelly Henderson didnt poll well, heard her on AA with Amanda Blair and she just talked jiberish about tha parks, never had a valid answer to any of Blairs questions. I think she probably did herself a disservice by going on the radio.

I like what Weatherill is doing, wont make him very popular amongst the party but I think he is right in what he is doing.

Not sure, he's pretty well liked within the ALP (AFAIK), and I suspect that if he wanted to challenge for Premier, he'd had the numbers to do so right now - but I think he's willing to give Rann 12-18 months to bow out gracefully.

Actually, it was all started by the defecion of Cheryl Kernot to Labor (or even her coup to seize the leadership if you want to take it back that far), Meg Lees and the GST was just the shot heard around the world.
