My favourite part is when she dusts off the bicycle for the media. Every election it makes an appearance yet somehow she still gets fatter!

While I agree Mitchell is no certainty to go back to Labor, I think Adelaide is safe enough with a 10.4% swing required to oust J-Lo

Piccolo very active local member and very down to earth. Will hang on for mine.

Surely Hanna will win Mitchell again. He is a good operator.

Doesn't it come down to the fact that the public think that putting people in jail for longer will solve the problem when in fact we know that it won't.

Rann plays on this as much as possible.

I realise I have made significnat gneralisations, but your points on the split betwen the Exec and judicial branhes are really thought provoking but seem to revolve around independence and its link with who appointed these people in the first place.

My view is that once appointed, they should be left to do their job. Rann or any politician interfering with the parole board is for me completely wrong.

I also think the AG should be independed and not an MP - similar to the Auditor General. Perhaps appointed by both ouses in joint sitting.

My political leanings are leftish for the record in case you didn't realise.

Shoot holes in all of this as you see fit. Great to see some interesting debate at least.

Jars I don't mind an elected AG so long as theyvdo the job of an AG.

If they stay out of the way of the Crown Solicitor, Solicitor General and DPP there's nothing wrong with being partisan. The problem is that Atko wants to individually run all these and thinks it's part of the job.

The fact we have an Attorney General who constantly attacks the system(dellusional anyone?) rather than seeking to explain and when necassary defend it is a joke for someone holding that job.

Atko would go down as myvleast favourite person in the world before even gettting into his embarassing comments relating to Internet filters, whether people exist and r rated games.

Some of the stories you hear around the law field relating to Atko's sheer ineptitude ate legendary.

Amendments to sentencing are one thing, but the idea of having past crimes as admissible evidence would be laughable if it wasn't serious.

Well, i think part of the problem is a misperception about what their job actually is. (hell, Jo thought they were judicial).

As far as i can tell, their role is to make a recommendation, and it is within the Governments normal range of powers to overrule their decision.

It also amazes me that you're suprised the bloke dislikes the legal profession, whilst at the same time declaring that everyone you know in the profession spends their entire life dedicated to saying that hes shit.

As with the legal profession, it's a chicken and an egg thing. He doesn't like them because he's never practised and lacks any practical understanding of the profession.

Looks like Trish Draper will fail to win back the seat of Newland for Liberals. However with Morialta looking like it's going back to the Liberals, I still maintain my initial stance that Labor will win with a reduced majority.

Very surprised Draper got preselected after her disastrous stint as the Federal member for Makin (which has now become a safe Labor seat)

Yep, I agree with this. Numbers don't add up for the Libs but they'll improve quite a bit.

If people find it offensive that an AG that isnt a trained legal professional can interfere with the parole process...

They should perhaps remember that the majority of the parole board holds no legal training either.

Interesting development. Need more information to make a serious assessment of how i feel about it.

On one level i dont like any potential errosion of the presumption of innocence, and being tried on previous cases could be a dangerous situation.

On the other, i feel the law has failed to keep up with what the science now suggests about pattern behaviour.

My outrage has nothing to do with the legal training.

It's any politican making the decision and when they do it kicking up a fuss in a way designed to create public anger at the system for their own political purposes.

Even in your worst case scenario where the Parole Board ticks the wrong box on the form and the Snowtown murderers are let out after 3 years there were much more responsible remedies that could have been undertaken by the Government.

Instead they manufactured outrage, defammed their own parole board appointments and did what they do constantly, undermining the system.

now, Greens are probably the party that is closest to my ideologies (unless there is actually a communist party out there), that policy will not work at State level and would probably not work on a federal level (would work on a global scale though)

I dont want major parties monopolising both houses, so I vote for minor parties and independants at senate level

but my HOR voting will always be the same
if finances are terrible - liberal (will be a shit term, but we at least make $ for labour to spend)
if finances are ok - labour

I am not sure if this was reported in the papers or anything, but it was reported on Media Watch. Apparently Atkinson sent a legal letter to someone who commented on an AdelaideNow article saying that Atko was a 'Crook'.


He sent a letter to the Advertiser & to the man who left the comment (he used his real name and suburb)

The letter basically said either pay me $20,000 compensation, or write an apology on AdelaideNow.

To which both complied.




There is something very wrong with Atkinson. The Crook.

One of the wonderful things about Atkinson is that he sees no contradiction in threatening private individuals making fair comments in a political discussion with defammation actions whilst repeatedly making defammatory comments under the protection of parliamentary privilege or when he stuffs this up allowing the state government to indemnify him such as what happened with Dr. Cannon. That Rann didn't ask him to resign after that episode was a disgrace.
