I'd disagree.

It definitely needs an overhaul, but it's not beyond repair. Some of the specialist areas are still world class and state of the art, and we're demolishing them.

The AMA disagrees quite strongly with you on that point - the facilities weren't world class when they were first built and fitted, let alone now.

Personally, I think the most entertaining part of this election is the complete lack of impact the Save the RAH party has had on the election. Not a single candidate has gotten in, and their preferences have yet to decide any seat.

The Liberal proposal was that parts of the facility would be knocked down or refurbished in stages, leaving roughly half of the hospital running at any given time while the remaining services are farmed out to the QEH, Lyle McEwin and Flinders for the duration.

The main objection to this was the extreme cost involved in keeping a Hospital, as opposed to something like an office block, in operation while construction work takes place in and around it, not to mention the disruption. The low costings from the Liberals - the difference between those and the new hospital costs were the crux of their argument - were borderline scandalous lies, and the Liberal deputy admitted as much last night.

whilst I'm far from pleased I think you'll find all my predictions came through.

Swing to the Libs, ALP to govern with reduced majority, Vini to get smashes and Jlo to lose.

I'm happy that Hanna looks to have held and that Rann's redferendum to abolish the Legislatove Council will never see the light of day.

Will be interesting to see if this comes as a reality check to the ruling elite of Rann/Foley/Atko/Conlon/Holloway etc. and they adopt a more concillatory approach to governance or if they continue in the same vane.

Also, unless Izzy can keep tonights vote constant or better she'll be spending much of the next 4 years looking over her shoulder.

being an old building it would of contained espestos - the wouldnt of been good for those who still have to stay there in other wings surely

as for not being able to use the land - im sure somthing would of been negoated or at least a loophole found in the agreement after all Rann created it. I dont believe they would of gone ahead with the RAH new hosptial if this wasnt possible

Federal and state Adelaide are pretty different.

But if the Federal Libs were to attempt this theory later in the year with a hotty I certainly wouldn't object. If I have to see a politicians face on every pole she might as well be a bikini model!

There are a number of specialty units within the RAH that have been upgraded in the last 5-10 to world class standard; some of which were also shut down in the last 18 months to give the impression the hospital was in a worse state than it is.


ST - New Adelaide MP is a MILF.

Jars - a Hospital can be built in a variety of different configurations requiring vastly different types/amounts of land; a stadium can't.

IMO, the two big surprises of the night were the loss of Adelaide and the swing to Labor in Light.

Hopefully this will provide the kick up the backside Labor needs to be a bit more accountable to the people. However, the result will allow the state to progress with the continued improvements in public transport (such as the tram extension to Semaphore, which the Liberals planned to scrap), the new RAH, and a great city Stadium in the new Adelaide Oval.

Actually I believe your wrong there. The Labor plan for AO was funded with the moeny meant for the Pt Adelaide tram line extentsion. So it was either fantasyland AO redevelopement. Or tram extenstion.

I don't think you understand. Under the present legislation if the current RAH site has it's use as a hospital discontinued it should be returned to park lands. Hence with the movement of the RAH down the road we're potentially losing alot of available space within the city.

It's not that the RAH is in a bad place as much as the fact that any other spot for it inevitably involves the giving up of land that could otherwise be econocally used.

Ever wonder why we never heard what Rann plans to use the RAH site for should his Taj Marj Hal go through?

So we get a new hospital more parklands and no new apartment blocks? Win win win!!

Seriously though, for me its a no brainer that a new hospital is better.

Now they have to deliver.

My recollection was that it was still going to Port Adelaide/Semaphore, but the new AO development will mean the tram won't go to West Lakes as well.

The AMA seems to be of the opinion that the "world class" tag was erroneously applied to those units for the purpose of cheery smiles and political expediency - even before the shut downs and run downs, they were only good units built within a limited budget, not genuinely world class.

This is a long way away. People bag the liberals for no costings but there are none of those and it is planned for many years down the track.

Putting 74 names down for the LC was exhausting but i've always had a strong opinion that you should. Anyway, there were quite a few minor parties that I wanted, even though most wouldn't get in.

Yeah I am not too sure about that. To get the $450m they had to halt the tram extenstion. And that was gonna give them about $100m? Surelly the West Lakes spur wasn't going to cost that much. Imagine how much it would cost to go to Pt Adelaide and Semaphore.

There's a big ol' open space right up the middle of Port Rd, originally intended to be a canal for boat cargo transport long ago, which would make a fantastic spot for a straight tram line all the way into Port Adelaide. No need to purchase extra land or knock things down, just remove a few trees and pay for level crossings and a few elevated sections over the busiest cross roads.

Compare that to West Lakes, where they would have to go halfway up Port Rd anyway, then go along West Lakes Boulevard on the street itself as it does within the CBD requiring a widening of the road and disruption to traffic, or even worse have to cut a trail through occupied land they'll need to buy, or pay for the entire length to be elevated.

The cost difference is quite considerable.

“People need to understand while the current government has talked about it there is no money allocated in the budget at all for this project,” he said.

“They’ve talked about the project which is significantly outside forward estimates to give the impression they are doing more than they actually are.

“It’s one of these promises that’s out there but there’s no financial commitment to do it it’s not on their immediate agenda.”

A spokesman for Transport Minister Pat Conlon said no money had been allocated for the extension.

Put simply, it's a long way away, hasn't been put in any budget and is a good chance to never happen. That's probably why there hasn't been much info and why I still don't know whether it's actually still coming to West Lakes.

And semaphore?

Looking at the map, Port Adelaide to Semaphore would only be marginally less expensive than a spur from Port Rd down West Lakes Boulevard to West Lakes - mainly because there's enough free space next to the train lines and down Semaphore Rd to run some tram tracks. The most expensive part would be a new bridge. The main problem with this is that the train line already runs the entire bloody course, just 500m further North, with dual rails as far as North Haven. A tram just seems pointless, especially with the new light rail cars due in 2014.

Put it this way, if any of this happens, the line to Port Adelaide will come first - it's easiest, cheapest, and required for a Semaphore extension and West Lakes spur to happen anyway

I'm with you on that one. It means you control fully where your vote goes as opposed to where your first choice party wants it to go.
