Toast Marcus Bontempelli - AFLCA Champion

This is probably the best individual POTY award. No one has a better view of the players and their impact on the game than the coaches.
Still, the Brownlow holds the prestige, it'd be nice if he could win one.
Nah... Best and fairest for the premiership team is the ultimate individual award.
Bontempelli did that too in 2016, if I'm not mistaken.

The premiership is what it's all about. Everything else pales into insignificance. Really, it's just feelgood fluff. So to be judged by your own coaches as the player who contributed the most to your club's premiership season must be the most satisfying accolade for any player to have.

Not saying they're the best player in the comp. Just saying it's the best individual POTY award.

Has Scott complained yet about it not being Dangerfield?

SCARY SCOTT SCREAMS AGAIN!
Cats coach Chris Scott called the decision to award Marcus Bontempelli the AFLCA 'really, really, really, UNFAIR!'
Sooky Scott stamped his feet while whingeing about Paddy Dangerfield being disadvantaged because he doesn't have, 'long hair and a big nose.'
'Paddy just looks a bit pink and weird, you can easily miss him on the field. It helps because they seem to miss how often he shanks it, but it is just really, really, really UNFAIR!!'
It was reported at training that Paddy, Gaz, Joel, Tomahawk and Chris formed a circle of complaint where they each gestured wildly and complained about unfair treatment.

You think about all the data & analytics coaches & their staff gather on individual players during the week.
Who to target, who to nullify.
Bontempelli is scrutinized closely by those inside the footy clubs and he still goes out there and destroys you on a week-to-week basis.

Certainly has to be one of the highest awards a player can receive.
Much more so than best and fairest's and brownlow medals.

Few players can exert their influence on a game as many ways as Bont. Has the ability to crash and bash inside, find space and time at traffic, make the perfect decision with the ball, deliver damaging, lace out kicks all over the field and take contested marks at both ends.

The inside/outside arsenal was on full display at the weekend, with 16 CPs, 10 tackles and 7 clearances rounded off by his goal on his non-preferred after juking to his left and faking out the defender and his pinpoint, daisy cutting passes to leading forwards (the 30-40m pass to English that was never more than 4 feet off the ground... be still my beating heart).

Stoked I get to watch this bloke in the red, white & blue every week and can’t believe what he’s been able to achieve already despite only just starting to hit his peak years.

What the hell is wrong with the Bulldogs?

Their midfield is stacked with McCrae, Bont, Hunter, Dunkley and Libba. Do they just have glaring deficiencies everywhere else?

We will field the youngest team of the 8 finalists so we've made the pointy end of the season in what was essentially a development year. We were rubbish in the first part of the season but have built gradually since the bye.
Some examples of this development are:

- Naughton switching from backline to forward
- Dunkley moving into full time midfield
- English becoming the number 1 ruck
- Emergence of Bailey Dale who has really only played this year since round 18
- Development of No. 6 pick Bailey Smith over the course of the year

As for the glaring deficiencies you mention it was noted on one of the footy shows that since the bye we are actually ranked in the top 3 in a number of categories.

The team has grown exponentially in a short space of time. There are still a few weaknesses, mainly body size, a true full back, and we are not great tacklers.

Also while we've had a relatively good run of injuries people forget that Picken and Tom Boyd are still on our list. Morris only played one game and Libba has missed chunks of the season and may not come back in. Wallis and Daniel are also out of action.

All being said and done I think we've done really well and I have no doubt we can beat anyone on our day.

I'd say the CA award is the best measure of a players ability, but B&F in a premiership year is the award a player would most value.
Yeah... that's a fair summation

I would drill down further and say the AFLCA award is really an award for the most consistently good/great onballer
You need to poll well (5,6,7,8,9,10) in 13 or 14 games to win it.

Whereas the Brownlow is an award for the most brilliant stand-out midfielder of any club
You need to poll 2 or 3 votes in 10 or 11 games to win it.

There have been good midfielders win these awards who weren't absolutely elite Top 5
(Hanneberry, Murphy, Goodwin, Priddis, Cotchin, Cooney, Bartel)

The Player's MVP has its share of critics, but I still think it produces the best winner every year.
It's the closest thing we have to the absolute best player.

Still not good enough to get the rising star award...
That went to some guy from Brisbane who's about to be delisted.....

The Bont wins the Coach's Award.

Goalkicking has been off this year, but gone to the next level in every other category. Gun.

The players' MVP is really wide open this year

Any one of Bontempelli, Dangerfield, Fyfe, Cripps, Neale or Grundy can win it

Probably out of the first four: Bont, Danger, Fyfe or Cripps

Flip of the coin
They really need to stop this award.

Most players do not watch 8 games of football every week.

The big problem is the coaches have to give their votes before they finish their review. So you will see the coach votes for AFLCA end up often quite different to the B & F votes.

If the AFL waited an extra day this award would mean a lot more.

Bollocks. You don't need to watch every game to have a solid opinion about who the best player is

Getting umpires to score 3-2-1 votes or both coaches to score 5-4-3-2-1 votes in every game isn't necessarily the best way to measure the best players' performances. It's hardly an exact scientific measure of all performances. But we accept it because it's the traditional way we've done things. If you think about it logically, it's a strange way of evaluating the performances of 44 players in a match.

Who cares if Bont or Danger put Gold Coast to the sword in some shiit game and score BOG votes?
The good thing about the MVP is that it probably places more emphasis on the best players performances in the bigger games

The players would also take note of poor performances and subconsciously mark a player down who failed to produce when it counted.
Brownlows and AFLCAs don't measure the player's worst games or average games. Those are are just ignored. Half of Bont's games don't count.

Look at the honour roll of past MVP winners: not one dud winner - they were all players who either had the best season, or equal best.
The Brownlow and AFLCA awards throws up some quirky results from time to time due mainly to the quirky scoring system.

Anyways, I like that we have a few different awards and we sometimes have 2 or 3 players getting recognised as the best player over the season.
It's stupid the way some folks demand changes to the Brownlow & want to see all these awards streamlined to produce one consensus best player.

It's all just opinion, whether you're a coach awarding weekly 5-4-3-2-1 votes, or an umpire awarding lots of 3-2-1's, or a player simply picking your MVP

You say a player doesnt need to watch games to know who has been the best player across 22 rounds of football.

I disagree. If they are not watching who is influencing their vote? Media? Teammates?

I just don't rate the award.

They have Cordy as one of their main defenders.

In all seriousness (Cordy is alright) their defense is lacking. Because they can play such a high pressure game in the middle, the ball entry into the oppositions 50 can be not very effective. However if the oppositions midfield can get any sort of run, that defense gets torn to shreds.

That’s how I see it anyway. Maybe Bulldogs supporters are better at answering.

That's basically it. Our midfield and forward line has been burning hot for the last 6 weeks though (except for the St Kilda game).

In defence of our defence, while our tall timber isn't much chop yet, our medium/small defenders have been awesome, especially Crozier and Duryea.
