would be interested to see what you guys thought of Marcus Drum.
Personally i think he will be a great CHB and will add alot to our backline with grover mcpharlin johnson hayden etc.

I honestly think this is his year to really step up and cement a spot for the future, has all the skillls and qualities of a CHB, i really hope Harvey and co. use him in this way

We used a first round pick on him to turn into a pure CHB.. So i hope he steps up this year

So how tall exactly do you think a CHB has to be? McPharlin is an awesome CHB when he is played there, he's 193cm. Mundy & Drum are 192cm & 190cm. Chad Cornes is only 192cm.

For mine if you shut down your man it doesn't matter how tall you are! With teams playing a lose man in defense I really don't think a few cms is going to matter, it's more about skill, using your body and your ability to read the play!

Harvey rates him highley. will be in our back 6 come round one (barring injury)

along with groves, elvis, roger, Johnno & Head/O'Brien.

Dodd fell out of favour come end of 2008. needs a big NAB/Regional challenge
to put his name up again

see i dont think he will be a CHB because he just seems way to short/small but i seem to be in the minority to think this

I agree entirely, he is not big enough to mix it with the gorillas in some of the opposition forward lines.
He is a HBF at best.

Height should have nothing to do with it. Cambell Brown is 177cm and he plays on key forwards. It's more about positioning and being able to read the play. Trent Croad is the same height as Marcus Drum and was the Hawks major key defender this year. If Drum bulks up there should be no reason why he cant play as a CHB or FB. I really hope he does as i presumed thats why we used a first round pick on him.

fair enough but how many times did brown play on jonathon brown, pavlich, hall etc? he may have played at CHB but im not sure he ever played on those guys.

just from what i have seen, drum looks more like a running half back flanker than a key position backman, he would get slaughtered against franklin/brown/hall etc IMO, but if he bulks up a bit maybe he could become a KPP, its just the impression i have had of him so far

Your right. Height has absolutely nothing to do with it. Mundy is the perfect example. Same height as Jakovich but struggles to hold down half good 3rd tall forwards. See also someone like who is Staker 196cm and cannot play KPP. I dont believe Drum is a KPP because he doesnt play like one, not because he is 190cm. Drummy likes to zone off, rebound, win the pill out of defence. Banging chests with and trying to contain the leagues best forwards is not his go I dont think. Play to his strengths. He'll be a very good flanke/rebounder type who can push forward if needed.

Drummy will definitely be CHB. He may be slightly shorter than others but he has a great leap and reach. He always seems to spoil his opponent whenever he is behind. I recon they should start him there and see how he goes.

He has played on key forwards before and has done pretty well from what I remember. He doesn't need to bang chests with them, he just needs to stop them from marking the footy (which he does quite well).

Positions mean nothing. Drum should play on the opponent he is best suited to, as should McPharlin and Grover - if that puts him at FB, or CHB or on a flank, so be it.

i think at this point, given that johnson and dodd have been so disappointing it cant hurt giving drum an extended go at CHB/FB and that may release johnson to attack more without getting loads of goals kicked on him..... but who knows what harvey is thinking? i mean we all rate drum, im sure harvey does, but whether he sees him as a KPP or an attacking player, we wont know untill midway through this year...... at the moment i see drum as more of a joel smith type player than a mattew scarlett type

I think he is a Sam Fisher type of player and will be a very good player for us in the future. IMO he cemented his spot in the side last year but had lots of injuries, his game against the pies in round 22 was brilliant if i remember correctly.

I rememebr brown playing on pavlich a couple of time.

brown might be a bad example given the way hawthorn play with their rolling zone, this i think allows a smaller player like brown play on a pavlich or j.brown, but i agree with your point drum at 192cm would be tall enough to play key position, drum is a beauty and i reckon that if he built up he could be a centre half back, or even if he stayed his natural size he would be a damaging half back flanker/ winger

:D thanks, i mentioned it to someone else, that i had been reading this forum without posting, and then i thought i would get involved and with all the ordinary names out there i thought i would go the alternative route and pick one after my favourite football memory ;)

Greenred and a couple of others have got it right - it's all about matchups on the particular day. There is no such thing as a CHB anymore. You just need one or two defenders capable of playing on the classier big forwards such as Brown and Buddy. Whether Drum is one of those I don't know. Hopefully he might be good enough to be one of our top seven defenders on a regular basis.

haven't seen enough of drum at wafl level - does he usually take the best forward or is does he play more of a run off role?

To be honest at a AFL level I have been mildly disapointed with Drum, hasn't really shown a hell of allot to get excited about.

At this stage my expectations are that of another Dodd type player or a Grover at absolute best.

I think for years we have struggled to unearth any real talented youngsters and have often overreacted to percieved talent.

Palmer and to a lesser extent Ibbotson have put allot of things into perspective (At least for me).

I agree. He has not shown a lot at AFL level.

He is a little small to be key position backman and too slow to play on smaller forwards.

At best will be a back up player if we have injuries or maybe he could take Dodd's / grovers place

The kid has played 17 games, give him a break. Not everyone can do a Rhys Palmer. You really think quality FB/CHB's like Bock, Rutten, Glass etc showed a lot in their first 20 games? Not really. Its all a building process, they don't go and stand the main forward from day 1 unless they are forced to via injury (in Collingwoods case with NJ Brown).
