My original involvement in the current series of posts was to note that a Marcus Drum thread has turned into a lonergan thread and then to a Harry Taylor bashing thread... For me, to talk up lonners as some gun defender is just ludicrous.

No Bashing of any players here....Taylor and Lonergan have performed admirably and we are all excited about what Drum could become to our team.

Just a reality check thats all... All three have there flaws, but i know with at least Lonergan and Taylor that they can fit in beautifully amongst a very high performing defensive rotation. I think the original argument centered around bringing in Drum to play a key post when others have been suggesting that Lonergan has been filling this post admirably (which i tend to agree with). Of course every player needs to improve... Lonergan's decision making, Taylors handballing, Drums ability to get on the field! However, besides Enright and Scarlett there are not too many people on our defensive list that don't have minor deficiencies to their game.

Ill stick by my original guns with Drum and say that we just have to be patient and wait for him to string a decent amount of games together before we learn what exactly he is capable of playing....at this stage not many of us have a viable opinion.

I think your post is spot on, unbiased and intelligent.

And the peanuts that carn't remember why we got talking Lonergan on the Drum thread, was because he's supposed to be the ready made Lonergan replacement, he'll play backflank, that's if he gets a game.

I'm suggesting the poor bloke needs some chop out against the big forwards, what's wrong with that!!! ......is that a rant?????

We are all excited about drum because he's actually a defender for starters, not a makeshift band aid to fill a position. Of course he needs to show this to get games and be a gun but im just saying im excited about him.. Hell im excited about next year and maybe all this pre season speculation and/or lack of footy is getting to me
 
That's pretty disingenuous to say Lonergan is a "makeshift band-aid" when it is quite apparent that he is carving himself a niche as a defender, and played 22 of 25 games in 2010. Before the "We beat the bulldogs by 100 when he was out" response is made, they were pretty clearly playing from their deathbeds after gassing themselves in the first 10 minutes of the opening quarter.
 
I see them as different types and Lonergan and Drum could play in the same side. Lonergan more the shutdown , Egan role , Drum more the utility type Harley role.

Longeran came in held his position , perhaps played better at times than some give him credit for , when asked to quell an opponent he more often did it. The one area that was profound weakness IMO was his inability to add to our marking strength. He was a 197 player , the tallest regular backman yet I had no confidence in him marking a high inbound ball.It here in my eyes he probably is a bit of the pace , Egan who was as brave overhead as either Harley or Rooke gave our backline strength. Still at times Tom did a job when players like Taylor couldn't but I do wonder how fit Taylor and Scarlett was for some of those games.

On Drum , he seems to me a more natural replacement for Harley. Yes he can play back but has played forward as well , he is probably a more talented player than either Harley or Lonergan. Ironically , just like Harley , one will only see his best if he can get a good run with injuries.

Certainly one of the most interesting things for 2011 will be watching our new coaches make assessment on these players and who they decided to give a game to.

Don't think most people at Geelong would have seen him play. Honestly would not know what he looks like, and have not missed a Geelong Victorian game for YEARS

Pace is middle of the road..not slow but not quick. Best asset is how well he reads the play and he's a very good kick.

Don't know if your memory is good enough for this to answer the question, but when we were at the box hill game, he was the guy standing on the fence (next to the bench) talking with Ben Johnson.
 
Drums pace is fine..
As for Lonners, I'd like to see him quell a forward and maybe I'll be less critical. I'm sure he'll be better for the year he had down back and height wise it makes sense to have him down there but "performed admirably" is a far too liberal use of that phrase. I stand by my statement that he needs to improve markedly. Posters on opposition threads would probably laugh at how much praise you're giving this bloke. The thread is about what we've heard and how we think Drum may go, not about having digs at those with differing viewpoints

I'd like to see him play in the 1's before I judge pace. I watched him play in the twos and showed me nothing. Generally so much space in a 2's game , opposition is weaker etc. Straightline pace means a lot less is you haven't the brains to use it , so I'll wait and see. Maybe preseason will show us.

Thing about Lonergan , is he is always going to look like a bunny to the opposition supporters. Hes just got that look. Where would you play Drum, Turbo? At 191cm he's too short for a key position or to cope with an opposition tall.
 
Played an excellent game at FF for us once and never got another chance. I like Drum and hope he makes it. As has been noted, reading of play is top notch. Decision making not too bad although he makes the odd clanger. Very very disappointing in the WAFL. Looked like he'd given up which was why he was shipped off. I'd like to have seen him backed in for a few more games in the 1's as signs were promising when we were screaming out for smarter players. Don't really understand why we didn't give him more opportunity.

Position play is becoming less relevant , its more role play but I don't think his size preclude him from playing against most marking talls , after all his height would be on a par with Scarlett. The biggest guys will probably be taken by taller defenders like Lonergan but there are quite a few mobile medium tall guys out there. If he could get really fit he could be a defensive mid after all he is not that far of Corey either , Rooke played like that early on. We may even see him up forward for a while , he has kicked 5 in a game , so we see what that does for us.
Id say we will see him get a starting gig at HBF and then we see what he can do when given a task after that.

Thanks, I do recall that, I think. Guess the point is, he has played so little with Geelong, high time that changes this year.
 
Its a long way from Switzerland to Kardinia Park but my two little " spies" both tell me that Drum is a certainty to get a good run this year, fitness notwithstanding....but maybe not where expected.

His elite foot skills, described as " Varcoe-like" by one of my mates are apparently to be "used to advantage" ..whatever that means.

Hows that for a bit of intrigue?? :D

Thanks for that. The intrigue is definitely there. The jury is naturally still out but that doesn't stop me from being excited about a new player that will hopefully push selection, fitness pending
