Dogs picked him up as a mature aged rookie in last years rookie draft.....started the season off injured like he supposedly spent a lot of time on the sidelines at Carlton.

I have been pleasently surprised with his form in the lastmonth at afl level and he seems to be getting more confidence every week. He is a awesome spoiler and at only 22-23 if he can get on top of his injuries he may have a career at league level.

There certainly is some good smokys coming out of the rookie draft these days

Re: Mark Austin

That if your over 195 and a reasonable build your almost have a right to play AFL football irrespective of ability...

Re: Mark Austin

He was originally drafted to be Bryce Gibbs' "Adelaide Buddy" (so he wouldn't get homesick).

Was a handy player who lacked any real desire to make it at AFL level (judging by his training). Then again, he was played out of position a bit by Ratten.

Happy to see Aussie get another chance and currently be doing well.

Had some real promise and potential but never delivered due to a shocking run of injuries at the Blues. Someone at the Doggies must have seen this and to their credit now have a solid defender that allows players like Lake to play a looser role in defence.

He might've kept Podsiadly quiet, but he made a few blues (hah, pun not intended) that led to goals. Went into contests that he was no chance of impacting, and let the ball get over the back a few times.
A guy who's been around a bit needs to be a bit more aware in that situation.

I wouldn't be crowing about him as a massive win, yet. So far he's been no more than serviceable, and you'd think Williams/Morries will walk straight back in.

Needs to go harder and kill the ball after he misread the flight of the ball on at least two occasions. Noticed he did this a few weeks back to let it get over the back and allow Swan to kick an easy goal. Though he might still be getting his confidence and strength back in his arm after he suffered a bad break last year. One of those players who is always injured.

Never have I seen a player get more second chances than Aussie.

He was chronically injured with us and was in pretty average form when he wasn't. Yet he somehow managed to stay on our list for 5 years and get picked up by another Club...

He should be thanking his lucky stars. All the best to him.

Good summation. I've noticed a few times when he has tried to impact a contest, but where he should be killing the ball, it just gets knocked over the back, and the opposition can run onto it easily. Happened a couple of times Friday night, and has in the weeks prior.

Serviceable though.

Austin's been a bonus, I'd have in my team instead of the uncoordinated Paul Bower any day. His job was to snuff out a dangerous forward and he did well.

So would I in many ways.

Austin was perennially injured at Carlton and had confidence issues.

Hopefully he plays more quality games at the dogs.

Bower sure does look ungainly, hence his nickname "emu", but he's not uncoordinated and has a much better record as a KPD than Austin. If you'd take Aussie over the emu then IMO you have a poor recruiting brain.

That should be something they can work on, though.

Hooker used to do it all the time (cue some fat Hawthorn bloke picking up the crumbs & pinging it from 60m ad ****ing nauseum over the summer). He's barely done it this year.

It's quite possible that it's just not been worked on, because he's missed so much footy - either that or he's just not that smart/coachable.
Looks like we'll find out anyway, he's doing a worthwhile job now.

Bower's playing because Laidler is out...

Simon White v Mark Austin would be a fairer comparison for that spot on our list. After five years, you can't hold onto an injury prone player who hasn't had break out games. Isn't a Gumbleton with the talent to be a former pick two.

What would the club know?

Aussie has more ability, speed and mobility than Hartlett who had five seasons and more than his fair share of injuries. Harts wasn't re-drafted and a former AIS junior.

Good luck to Aussie - always showed he could play and CHB is his best spot by far.
It's unfortunate that Carlton didn't give him enough chances like the doggies have even in such a small time. In other words play him at CHB for multiple games and not switch him forward, drop him or even play him full back! Yes he had injuries but we just don't appreciate that a player can be just pigeon holed into one position and that there is nothing wrong with that!!!!

Good luck Aussie. Hope you keep going and growing in confidence now.
Russell will be next!
