Re: 21. Mark Austin

Frankly, I wouldn't mind trialing him as a forward in 2011 if Watson steps up next year.

Watson would have to really make an impression in the pre-season for me to want to plug him in at CHB in 2011. Give him a game here and there, but I would rather see Austin play the majority of games at CHB, making Bower the third tall in the back-line, which is a much better role for him. Also, assuming that Henderson gets back early and that someone else (Kreuzer, Hampson, O'hAilpin, White, Mitchell or Casboult) can fill in for him until then, we wont really have any NEED to move Austin into the forward line.

Basically, is he CAPABLE of playing as a forward? Sure. However, we have so much depth up there now that we can leave Austin down back where he belongs. On top of that, he is also reportedly looking great in pre-season training and (hopefully) will put together a great season as a key position defender.

Re: 21. Mark Austin

Chose him in the buddy draft because he represents a decent chance for Carlton to move into the top 4.

I don't think anyone outside the current best 22-25 players could offer Carlton more in terms of a shot at the top 4 in 2011. If he can hold down CHB releasing Bower, then Carlton's backline goes from average to decent.

That along with a great midfield and ruck division will see Carlton make a sustained push for top 4.

I'm crossing everything this guy can stay on the park and show something in the pre-season.

Really feel I killed the Carlton Buddy Draft of 2011 based on pick position!

Your time is now Mark Austin!

From talking Carlton

It was great to see the big man training unhindered in the preseason. Fingers crossed the injuries are behind him.

I thought he looked really fit at training on the 6th. He looked good imo.
He looked to be ahead of Watson, but that's to be expected, and lets remember that its only training too.

I think Bower and White looked bigger and physically more impressive than they were in 2010, but they may lose some of the bulk in the next 4 weeks of summer training, so I think Austin has a big challenge to earn a KP position ahead of him.

I paid a bit of attention to Aussie because I have him pencilled in (in hope) as our CHB for 2011.
Following this training session, I can see our HB line being Russell Bower Duigan, and White and Laidley competing for the BP role as the 3rd tall. If Austin is given the chance to make CHB his own in 2011 as we have heard, then I can see Bower as the 3rd tall.

Re: 21. Mark Austin

I've been supportive of Aussie over the past few seasons and it has been really disappointing that he hasn't been able to play more than a couple of games here and there.

Injuries have thus far cruelled him of making significant inroads into a successful AFL career.

Seems to be fit and training really well this preseason, so I just hope that he builds on that and manages to keep his health in check.

A fit Aussie would be a huge bonus for us in 2011. Physically he's ready to go and can play senior footy from round 1. He's probably more suited to playing down back but we've seen him spend a bit of time up forward (moreso at VFL level rather than AFL level) and he has not looked out of place by any stretch of the imagination.

We could've used him in the 2nd half of last season when our tall defenders were falling like flies.

If Hendo doesn't get up for round 1 I wonder if we'll see Aussie fill a key forward position or if they'll go with the more experienced O'hAilpin.

Aussie as a forward is something I hope to see in the NAB Cup. Would love to see him in the senior team come round 1, but whether that be as a forward or a defender would have to depend on team balance and injuries to the rest of the squad.

2011 is without a doubt a make or break year for Aussie. He's started well at this very early stage but there's a hell of a long way to go. Here's hoping he stays fit and manages to push his way into the senior team.

That's Todd Elton. He and another AIS boy are training with us for the week.
Brief observations from training;
- Mark Austin is ready. Looks quite the imposing defender now.
- Andrew McInnes looks to have a solid frame and very neat skills. Pleasantly surprised with what I saw.
- Not sure Bray would have a spot if it weren't a NSW scholarship deal. Not putting the line through him yet but he's a fair way behind the rest.
- I didn't see McLean, not sure if he's injured or maybe I just missed him.
- Casbeast has a very iffy kicking technique but he was sending them through the sticks very nicely.
- Plenty of friendly sledging between the boys, Hendo and Hampson had a good bit of banter going on in a handball drill :p
- Standout was Andrew Walker. Easily the best trainer we have and I was impressed with his willingness to better himself. Had a 1 on 1 session with Ratten, leading to space and taking marks above his head. His kicking was excellent. The worst of his kicks went to Ratten's knees, and Tex swore at himself even for that. He just has the sort of attitude that you have to admire.

Put your house on him in 2011!

I'm loving all these positive reports about Austin coming into 2011. Lets hope they all prove to be well-founded. :thumbsu:

21. Mark Austin

A practice match report from the game against Greater Western Sydney.

Mark Austin played really well I thought. He played quite a bit of time up forward and took some good grabs. He looked like a genuine AFL player. I know the opposition was only young, but you can't take away from him playing well.
I hope he's a good judge. :thumbsu:

Ratten Q&A
There are high expectations for Mark Austin as a defender and fans are keen to know if he can finally overcome his history of injuries.

He had a few hiccups and did a hamstring after the Christmas break, which was just a small one, so he missed 21 days. The versatility of those talls will be really important and Mark understands that. He's looking for a big year. He's been around the system for a while, it's time that he broke in and cemented a spot, so he really knows where he has to go with his football. He's done most things during the pre-season and done most things well.
Ratten Q&A

Perhaps we were happy with Austin's game, so we're giving White a run?

Re: 21. Mark Austin

In good form for the Ants.

Another couple of good performances will see him get a game!

C'mon big fella, you could be the defensive monster we are looking for...well at least for the right matchups.

If he can stay on the park and find form, he would be a good match up for Cloke, and provide another option for Podsiadly...

...ok, i'm getting way ahead of myself i know..but he is my buddy and I have a right to go over the top...he is not injured, he got named for Carlton before he missing out and then played well in the 2s!

C'mon austin, make life hell for Ratt's team selection days!
