Re: Mark Blake - A question:

ok, lets not start the
"my name is blake and i should have played in gf, despite my form.
my name is blake and my dad is rod
my name is blake and i will not play if king stays
my name is blake and i am unco
my name is blake and i can't compete against top ruckmen
my name is blake and i am byrnes look like a champ
my name is blake
and i can't play"

and rod=coz

what was so great about stevie king last season?

he was given a chance while blake sat out 2-3 games while king showed how much of a shell of his former self he was. king cannot even jump to contest centre bounces. his only contested mark was against a goal umpire!

and his first game with the saints he had 0% hit outs to advantage.

Re: Mark Blake - A question:

till then it will be great to see him beaten in the ruck by monfries, or someone with no height

Finally showing your true colours.

Please go back to Bay 13 where your posts belong because you've lost any credibility that you might have once had. Wanting our own players to fail is low, very low.

Re: Mark Blake - A question:

I don't want to see him fail, but I have my doubts about this bloke for the future. I worry that Geelong may be carrying dead weight for too long. The sooner we offload those that never will be, the sooner we can start looking for someone who will cut the mustard in 5 years time.

Dunno about u, but i have never had as much faith in our footy and recruiting departments as i do at the moment. If they want him there, thats enough for me.

Re: Mark Blake - A question:

Can we leave the kid alone, he hasn't even gotten to 50 games yet, which is the BARE MINIMUM for us to start judging his worth to the team. He backed up Ottens admirably last year, for the majority of the season, and only faded towards the end of the year. King barely played for us last year, has been a great servant to the club but is not a superstar ruckman by any stretch of the imagination - anyone watch his game against Sydney? Hardly groundbreaking stuff.
The fact is, Blake is now our #2 ruckman, whether you like it or not. King's gone, Blakey's learning his craft and you need to give him a go - all ruckmen take time to develop and he's only 22 for F's sake.

Lots of our boys were rusty against port - give Blake the same latitude to shake the cobwebs out and get going.

Re: Mark Blake - A question:

Which raises any interesting question - does Geelong stick with Blake now there is some investment in him or cast him aside and start again?
Not many 22yo rucks stand up in Finals, however the concern is that some look likely to be big game players, others, like Blake do not.

At this stage he is still our second best ruck. While he is he needs to be played.

Hi, Rod again.

Agreed on all points. I get everyone's frustration with him and I get the original question about whether or not he would still be on the list if his name wasn't Blake.

I feel that he is pretty hardly judged (can we throw him in the same basket as Byrnes and Tenace?) for a guy who has played less than 40 games, sat in Ottens and King shadow for most of his career and (as most good judges agree) is likely to develop more slowly as he is a tall.

He showed heaps last year as Ottens back-up, he ticked all the boxes that needed to be ticked for mine and a few clubs came sniffing around at the end of the year.

Unlike some other players in the 1st 22, there isn't really a guy on the GFC list that can step into his spot that makes the side better...yet.

I like the look of West but realistically he isn't quite ready.

I think I have defended him enough now. :D

Re: Mark Blake - A question:

I think his performance against Port in round 1, will be beneficial for him in the long run. I imagine before the game, in his head he was very much thinking that he would go and show his worth, and prove everyone wrong about his dropping from the grand final side. Make a real point by having the best game ever against the same grand final ruckmen.

The fact that he played poorly and was destroyed in the ruck would probably have made him realise a few truths, in that he has still has a fair way to go before being considered the number 1 ruckman. And it probably calmed his anger about being dropped.

It can only help him get even better.

FWIW

Is 22 really that young?

Blake's best return for touches is 15.

Steven King managed to collect 18 disposals on debut; when he was 17 years old. ;)

King was also the AA ruckman in 2000; a season he played as a 21 year old.

FWIW :)

This isn't about comparing Blake to King. We all know King was an awsome ruck back in his prime, and being able to play any position at 17 is a rarity.

Blake is not out number one ruck, and as a number 2 he does his job.

Big men take time.

So does anyone want to take what they said back?
Don't be so ridiculously subtle crosby.

Blakey showed the haters up in emphatic style. Two goals, great contested mark, serviceable around the clearances and absolutely dominant when it came to tap work. Did he set the world alight? No. Did he have to do? No. Did his job and did it well.

Blake toiled all day, and showed those who were on his case that he was made of tougher stuff than what they presumed. I bet that the pressure was coming at him from more places than just bigfooty, and Blake handled it well. I am happy with his performance, but I still don't think that our ruck division is stable. A few consistant performances may help to change my mind. I was very impressed with him today though, and when he shanked his second kick through for a goal, I was jumping out of my chair with excitement. Nice work Blakey. :thumbsu:

U mite disagree, but i thought today was blakes best ever game. Won the ruck easy, gave a target to kick to around the ground, was really good defensively puttin his hand in when he needed too, two goals plus that hanger.

Ive always been a bit uncertain about him but today thought he was great.

wtf who was that in the ruck today surely it couldn't have been that unco Blake. Whatever he did differently this week at the club lets hope he remembers what it was and repeats it every week. Performances like that every week will surely get the knockers off his case. Well done Blakey.

The contested mark for mine was the best thing from his game today. Sure, it was late in the piece but lets just show that piece of footage to him over and over to remind him that he can do it.

He was great today. Hille is no mug and Blake did a number on him.

I have been one of his harshest critics but today he actually showed he may just be a late developer with a reasonable future. I still don't think he will tear the competition apart and that the Leuenbergers, Tippetts will be better long term prospects than Blake but he may be a useful second stringer.

To see him take what was probably the first overhead contested mark in his life today was encouraging. To then kick truly was good. He now has to back it up consistently week by week. He is still vulnerable to the ruckman that goes forward but he is improving in that area.

I also thought that West was better this week as well.

I loved it how the commentators kept indicating that Hille would start to take adavantage of Blake around the ground. What is scary for mine is how good we will be when we get big Otto back in the middle...

Blake
23 Tapouts 6 marks 15 possessions 2 goals

That is a phenomenal effort from Blakey. Essendon got a total of 19 hitouts!

What a shame Achilles got itself red-carded, as it would have had to eat a large amount of humble pie, and I was ready to serve it up a huge slice of the stuff.

Blakey was awesome today! His hitouts in the centre more often than not hit a team-mate on the chest, and capped it off with 2.1, including a poster from a snap from the boundary S.J. would have been proud of.

Now that he's raised the bar on what he can do, hopefully he can produce that effort every week. :thumbsu:
