Opinion Mark Blicavs

What Blicavs gives you and why I think CS and the MC rate him so highly is his almost unparalleled versatility. He's 6'6" (198cm), runs all day, is excellent in traffic, is smart and I noticed on Saturday night is even starting to throw his weight around a bit. Once he can take pack marks consistently, he could be a nightmare match up at CHF.
Is becoming an elite footballer right before our eyes.
Ballroom...get around him!!

This is the end game. CHF (dare I say it?) ...........playing in the manner of one N Reiwoldt.

That is certainly a possibilty as is second ruck .
His ruckwork is getting so much better and as others have said he plays like a midfielder once it's on the deck.
I wonder what his final playing weight will be - he has the frame to be seriously big but you would hope not at the expense of his endurance.

Its an interesting idea. I'm not against it at all. I am wondering whether in the spirit of mixing things up, that in the future (2015 onwards) we may see Blicavs and Vardy sharing the 2nd Ruck and CHF position during matches, to throw doubt into the opposition.

Definitely. And he's like Riccardi in his ability to get/keep his arms free when tackled, making it much easier to handpass accurately.
This is definitely something that he has developed over his time here. I noticed earlier this year that while he was better at getting possession he was also making every effort to free the arms in every tackle.

Still has a long way to go but he has also come SO far its amazing. Bloke is a footy sponge.

Meh, people make calls.

Sometimes those calls will be right, sometimes not.

I think the amazing thing is the level of criticism usually heaped on players who are 50 games or less. Also just the abject negativity of some posters. Also how some people appear to be watching a completely different game or have some kind of logic failure when it comes simple analysis.

This guy is one of the best big man rookies I have ever seen. In fact his first 40 games were of very high calibre. Especially considering he has played almost every position on the ground at some stage. Utility players usually take years and years to come good. His ability to stay on the park and improve is also a massive upside - staying fit and injury free is half the battle for young players.

Bliclavs > Jack Watts
Bliclavs > Goddard (first 50 games)

And these two blokes were number 1 draft picks!

Don't get me wrong, different opinions are fine. But when people are so utterly stupid to not see that this bloke has been one of the most exciting pick-ups we have had in recent years, you may find other people throw around some opinions of their own, mostly about your lack of intelligence!

As for his ideal position, I think he should remain a utility. His ability to go into the midfield, become a hard running forward, pick up an out of control forward, became the spare man in defence and play ruck should, to my mind, mean he stays as a utility player. This guy could become one of the most dangerous big men in the competition in the next 5 years. I love it!

Gerard Healy on the radio really raving about Blitz. He said instead of talking about "can this experiment work, it's now "How far can he go?"
Chris Scott agreed, said Friday was his best game for us, very impressed with what he does with the ball and they love what he does without it. Thinks he can also play back or deep forward. Spoke about what a handful he is for some of the lumbering ruckmen in the league.
Scotty said he thought Mark could become elite, but that Scotty thinks that about a lot of their players

Another great interview with Scott. He continues to grow in stature IMO. As for Blicavs, him too! Loved his game on Friday (and gave him votes). As Healy says he is Geelong's new X factor, and I can honestly see him taking home a Charlie one day. His progress has been steady.

Not sure about the charlie Sttew but he sure is developing wonderfully well. To top it off, he is impossible to match up on. Because of his endurance, and good pace, he can play in a wing, drift forward or back, or take on ruck duties. I thought he was particularly good in the last quarter v Carlton with his contested ball efforts, and he just kept going…

He is the ultimate utility.

Gerard Healy is an astute judge. However if I was an analyst in an opposition team I wouldn't necessarily be making it a high priority to formulate a plan for him - at this stage he is playing an important role, but he is not overtly dangerous. If he can force the opposition to pay him respect and try and plan around him then it will undoubtedly disrupt game plans and make it much easier for our other players.

The way he plays at the moment, while being composed, is a little too much on the safe side with ball in hand with dish-offs and kicking sideways a bit too often. Yes, he does blow up opposition ruckmen and his running patterns are elite but at the moment I could see the opposition just not really needing to worry about him too much (they also don't really know how to combat him anyway)

He has a perfect opportunity this week to get opposition teams to start planning for him - against Hawthorn on the big stage. I would tell to go out there and play like it was the GF, run to dangerous spots and DEMAND the footy.

Give him a license. Tell him it's OK to make mistakes and tell the players to find him wherever possible. Tell him to blow up the GPS in the first 3 QTRS and set a mark that is unheard of, then maybe sub him out. Come out of the game with 10 marks, 2 goals and 20 disposals and be so spent after the game that your teammates will see how much you have put him. Easier said than done I know, but the reward if he can pull it off would be huge for him and the club.

After that, watch the opposition have to put more time into him - therefore opening up for everyone else.

All he has to do is run forward and take contested marks like he did on Friday.
Do that a couple of times a game and the opposing ruck will have to follow him everywhere. And they'll blow up even quicker.
Allowing our #1 ruck to dominate.

Love your assessment.
I was ridiculed for my praise of Blic some months ago when I likened him to Kouta, but to me the comparison is still valid.

The one thing I really liked against Carlton was when he pushed forward into a dangerous position, was rewarded for the effort by having the ball directed to him and then he clunked the contested mark and kicked the goal.

Do that more often and he becomes significantly more dangerous and his man will need to work even harder.

It was a great sign I thought.

Oh snap.

Beat me to it.

If he ever puts in a season like Koutoufides' 2000, I will (a) be very happy and (b) come back and kiss your post. :D
Can't wait .
I just hope he is building to something very special THIS September, already. Does not seem like a guy who is going to wait and see, I think he will make it happen whenever he can.

Id say there are some very very nervous Hawks posters on the Bay that are schmearing it all over right now. Blitz has gone way past being a project to being a threat. And last week he was a sliver away from kicking two goals. If he can, as has been stated, push forward to a position that demands the ball and gets a few more goals, oppositions will be forced to follow him and not let him run.

Bloke is still sub 50 games and learning. And judging by the 3rd man up grab he took in the back line past week his work won't just be important at one end.
Our #1 rucks should start buying him lots of lunches.
