There was an article on him after round 3 or 4, and in it he spoke about one area of his game he had to work on was concentrating for 2 hours and playing out the matches; with his background his event is over in a matter of minutes, but not the case anymore.
Not only that, but I would thought in athletics there is little in the way of having to think on your feet when you are competing. You'd plan your race out tactically , but there really can't be much in it, unlike footy.

I predict another Mumford type situation at the end of the year with Blicavs, as he's another rookie ruckman who looks the goods.
At his current rate a few clubs will give him an offer, but the club has more salary cap space than when Mumford left. And hopefully we're better prepared this time round to deal with a situation like that.

I recon Geelong would give him a decent offer and given the club has done alot for him already (by putting him on the list while he was still trying out for the olympics) he's more likely to stay I recon.
For those potting his ruckwork, hes definatly ahead of West now even in this department!

I recon keep Blicavs in the 22, swap West for Simpson or Hmac.

Incredible that he has debued this season and played 10 in succession - his last being his best.
The Freo NAB Cup game was the first anyone had seen of him and it showed - he was allowed a free run at the ball in the ruck and jumped over the top of Sandilands each time. He looked raw but you could see he had something from the way he went about it.

He only had 2 or so kicks and they looked dodgy , now he's a chance to goal from 50 and his field kicking is measured and very effective , FFS did he kick with his left on Saturday night?

He gets blocked in the ruck now and would do well to study Natanui who manages to use his leap well in most ruck contests.
Having said that I'd like to see more of him as a utility around the centre of the ground where he can use his speed and endurance and develop his linking ability as well as exploit his height advantage.

It will probably take 2 or 3 seasons to start seeing what Blicavs is really capable of doing but if Geelong have any brains they must upgrade him to the senior list at the end of this year, regardless of the result of the season, or who intends to stay/leave. He is hot property already in the media, who have not missed a beat on his development.

What's there to be prepared about? The player has to WANT to leave. If Blicavs isn't a greedy two-faced coward like Mumford there won't be an issue.

Why so Partridge? If you were offered a better role and an extra $200 grand in your employment, you would say no? I am genuinely interested in the a)greedy, b) two-faced and c) coward descriptions for Mumford. I dont think i could blame him for taking up the offer given the situation at the time.

He might if he can get more money, or if our club is stingy, and the reality is some other clubs have more salary cap space than us (like Sydney in 09).
The club can be better prepared by actually getting on the front foot this time. By guaranteeing a spot on the senior at the end of the year, right now (as hes clearly the best prospect of the rookies), or risk other clubs offering more money, because he is worth more money. Steeplechasing ruckman dont grow on trees ;)

It's nothing new, these arguments have been said many, many times.

a) greedy - We only draft players of character remember? Why then would they be greedy? All the criticism levelled at Ablett should just as equally be levelled at Mumford - leaving purely and simply for money. He's absolutely entitled to do that, but it's still greed. You want to look after yourself fine, but don't expect to be liked for it.

b) and c) I was at the Best and Fairest in 2009 when Mumford had been offered the deal by Sydney. No one I spoke to - players, coaches, officials - begrudged him his offer, his good luck, or his right to look after himself. This bit is crucial, he never said a word to anyone that he wasn't anything but happy about Geelong and how he'd been treated.

Then, only after he had left, he started spouting off about how he would have stayed if he'd played in the Grand Final. Given that his last game in Geelong colours returned stats of 5 possessions and 5 hitouts (Blake had 12 possessions and 29 hitouts in the same game), and he was obviously running on fumes, he was quite deservedly and correctly droppped for Ottens, allowing Ottens and Blake to help deliver a premiership. So to say that you were unfairly treated shows he has a very selective memory, and he's absolutely gutless and a coward because he had plenty of time to say that to Geelong while he was there and didn't.

Back to topic, I don't see Blicavs leaving. Even if McIntosh gets on the park he won't be around forever. With Vardy likely to spend more time up forward there's still room for him.

So are you saying Mumford should have been guaranteed finals in 2009? You can't guarantee anyone anything. Presuming McIntosh is back, that leaves one ruck spot - for most likely Blicavs or West. Yep right now Blicavs is flying. What if he gets injured? What if loses form? What if the rigours of his first season at senior level leave him wrecked by the end of the year (as it did Mumford)?

He just needs to do what West did. Work on his game and be patient. He is getting now, and will get in future, plenty of opportunities.

Fair enough. I dont know what goes on behind closed doors - i just saw a guy that was offered a starting 18 role and and couple of extra grand per year and cant begrudge him making the decision he did.

As for the Blitz, a guaranteed upgrade at the end of the year. Sure going to be tight for spots on the list.

It will, but I reckon he'll be very much required. Don't think he's got anything to worry about to be honest.

I never knew he could do it in such a short period of time.
His skills are developing every 2nd game or so, thought it would take him at least 2-3 years to get all the simple nuisances down pat but he's obviously one hell of a competitive beast and works his butt off on the training track.
He's starting to pluck contested marks and attributing to the scoreboard.

Remember seeing him play in a VFL game last year and he completely turned the game in a 3rd quarter and kicked 2 goals, 1 behind but he had something special in the manor in which he was standing up in that particular game.

Makes you wonder who is on the chopping block. Chappy would be one who may be persuaded to chuck it in if his body continues to struggle. Who else is out of contract out of the fringe players?

Another example of Mumford being greedy was when he played in last years granny, he was clearly underdone and was absolutely useless for the swans and hence subbed off. Not saying he was was the first player to do this nor will be the last...

Guy like Simon Prestigiacomo and Matty Stokes get remembered for being club champions and pulling themselves out when they were not right.

Lucky for Mumford the swans won so who cares...

the reality is some other clubs have more salary cap space than us (like Sydney in 09, or just after they won the premiership or at any other time).
Corrected
