Do the maths and work it out.
Pokies is a mathematical computer programmed dumb system to take money from really bored people.
Legitimate gambling of sports events where the actual chances of a result for either team winning is not a mathematical certainty. A sports event is not computer programmed. Big difference.
Education is the key to get the difference.
It's not random. It is a computer program. It is just dumb to play something designed to remove money from someone silly enough not to understand there is no skill and also virtually no entertainment or social engagement in it at all.Whilst the pokies are random
People like you should not bet on anything with this thinking. So if i lose all my money betting on AFL its ok, but if i do it on the pokies then poor me?
People like you should not bet on anything with this thinking.
Do not gamble on anything if you do not understand maths.
You earlier post suggest totally not.No, i understand how things work
You earlier post suggest totally not.
You clearly do not understand the difference with your line of thinking.
for some reason they make me think of ferris.
No, i understand how things work. Im just not a hypocrite who thinks its ok to take money from one but not the other (and pat yourself on the back because 'we shouldnt take money from pokies')
I do see a distinct difference in a club owning or being directly affiliated with X number of pokie machines, and the AFL making money from sports betting partnerships which then goes into a collective pool and is, in some way, filtered through to all clubs.
The AFL is making money from sports betting companies. The AFL is making money from lots of other things. Some of the money the AFL makes ends up in Carlton's account. That's a distinctly different prospect to Carlton taking a percentage of what a bunch of pokie machines extract from gamblers.
Obviously there's a fair old rabbit hole you can go down with this. We won't do business with companies that engage in <insert ethically deplorable activity>, but should we then not do business with the businesses that do business with that business as well...after all, they're profiting from said <ethically deplorable activity>.
I see it the same way I do things like pollution/recycling - you don't have to be perfect to make a difference, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try and be better where you can.
Frumpy, I can tell you have played pokies with this type of thinking.
Sorry you lost money to such things.
Hopefully you are wiser and never go near those mindless pokie machines again.
Yeah fair enough. I see both sides of the argument but in the end, my view, i see the machines dont disappear, the same people still lose their money - it can go to some Rich old bastard who owns the pub and nothing 'good' comes of it (just fills his pockets) or it can go back into a community football club to which a lot of people get a sense of belonging, purpose and enjoyment out of supporting this club. I know which i would prefer
Like drinking beer or drinking wine? Please explain. There's a difference between sports gambling and pokies, though.
Honestly - hadn't given that side of it much thought either. Better for the money the gamblers lose to go into a footy club or better for it to pad out someone's property portfolio? Definitely an argument to be made.
Still - instinctive, gut feel is that I'd rather we were able to cut ties and find other, more wholesome, ways to fund the club. I'd also like to see all the pokie machines broken down for scrap Never had a negative experience with them, don't know anyone directly (that I'm aware of) who has suffered because of them, but the existence of a bunch of machines which are designed to pocket money from people with addictive personalities without giving anything back...society doesn't need them.
I respectfully disagree.I do see a distinct difference in a club owning or being directly affiliated with X number of pokie machines, and the AFL making money from sports betting partnerships which then goes into a collective pool and is, in some way, filtered through to all clubs.

I respectfully disagree.
I hate the fact that sports betting companies show the odds at half time next to the score at venues and have ex footballers chat about the odds. Does my head in. I see it as an predatory attempt to groom impressionable teenagers into the betting industry and get them hooked on betting on the sport they follow. All forms of gambling have social consequences.
Like drinking beer or drinking wine? Please explain.
They still benefit financially from gambling and can’t claim the higher ground. You obviously think they can. What are you disagreeing with?
I never gave my thoughts on sports betting, and for the record I think the marketing strategies are getting out of hand.
I simply see a distinction between clubs all getting part-funded by the AFL who are in turn part funded by sports betting agency marketing deals...and clubs owning or part-owning pokie machines.
I deserve condemnation for barracking for the tigers; that was a morally reprehensible thing to do. The only thing worse, that I can think of in this moment, is a decade long prohibition on alcohol, and Premier Caines midnight curfew. Oh and the call by a few for CFC to abandon something that’s deemed legally permissible and consequently morally acceptable on the whole. Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing; other than when it relates in any way to the Richmond footy club; we should get out of anything to do with Richmond; and expel anyone associated with em.Opine, you also barracked for Richmond at finals time...
