Not saying pokies aren't a blight on the community, i would eliminate them completely but there are more important factors that need addressing when it comes to domestic violence

Sorry, previously you stated that there was no link between gambling and domestic violence, now though you are focusing on pokies. Lots of evidence that suggests gambling and the losses that come with it are big factors in domestic violence, not specifically pokies, but pokies are a form of gambling.

There are many reasons and contributing factors, but its definatly a part of it.

This comment along with Thys objection to Elmer's comment earlier has me confused somewhat. A quick internet search brings up countless articles linking gambling to family violence.

The Victorian Royal commission in to family violence stated, and i know this is cherry picking a quote:

'People with gambling problems are more than twice as likely as people without gambling problems to be victims and perpetrators of family violence.'

Am i missing something here?

Reporting has become more transparent, we have become less tolerant.

Not saying it isn't a contributing factor, but what do they say about alchohol, drugs, upbringing, etc?

...........

There is no single cause or factor that leads to domestic violence. A number of risk factors have been identified as associated with perpetrators of domestic violence. These include age, low academic achievement, low income or exclusion from the labour market, social disadvantage and isolation and exposure to, or involvement in, aggressive or delinquent behaviour as an adolescent

The drivers of men’s violence against women include:

gender norms
accepting and sometimes approving of men’s violence against women
men controlling decision-making
limits to women’s independence in public and private life
interactions between men that are aggressive and disrespectful towards women.

Other contributors to men’s violence against women:

There are also a number of reinforcing factors that, while not a direct cause of men’s violence against women, increase its likelihood and severity:

discrimination
experience of and exposure to violence
alcohol and substance use
some cultural and religious practices
lack of knowledge of Australian laws
loss of traditional family and community support systems.

........

Gambling is generally a release, not a cause

Alcohol(ism) is by far the biggest common denominator in domestic violence. A drinker is far more likely to gamble than a non drinker. It is a complex issue because many factors appear in the statistics behind domestic violence. Alcohol is a particularly nasty drug with nasty side effects on too many of its regular users.

The club should give away all its poker machine businesses ASAP to some deserving charity, such as The AD Fund (no relation) where its dirty filthy money could be used to help young single mothers, and struggling breweries.

You know it's the right thing to do.

I would hazard a guess that there has been am element of gambling/pokies losses involved in several Domestic Violence incidents over the years in our state since Kennett legalized them in 1992.
As much as some are wont to blame many of Victoria's ills on Jeff Kennett, it was Joan Kirner's Govt which introduced pokies into Victoria in 1991, at a time when Victoria's finances were totally up the creek (remember Pyramid Building Society, Tricontinental & the State Savings Bank of Victoria?) Maybe this was accidentally forgotten when choosing to name a hospital after her.

Ah, Thanks for clarifying that for me.
.I just assumed cause Kennent brought in Crown Casino, he was also responsible for the introduction of the pokies.
