Mark McVeigh's Speech

re the captaincy - a little mongrel in a captain won't hurt. if anything the younger players need to learn to hurt their opponents more (within the rules). hille has copped suspensions himself in recent years. mark mcveigh clearly should be captain - i like a captain who hates losing. james hird was that and mark mcveigh the same.

for what it's worth, as an outsider's perspective, I'd say McVeigh is definately the choice for captaincy! granted I don't know a great deal about the inner dealings of the club and the players, but I was extreemmmmeeelllly impressed with that vision!!

can't speak highly enough of the guy after seeing/hearing him, always thought he was a decent player but never struck me as being anything beyond that, now I'm happy to declare I was very wrong

so yeah boils down to: give him the role
stood up to speak for the team amidst all the emotion etc. and told it like it is, fantastic stuff

TC:eek:

Absolute legend of a bloke.

Met him a few weeks ago whilst on the piss and asked him about the Brad Johnson incident.

He told me that Johnno had bagged Essendon sayins they were a shit club with no culture who haven't and wouldn't win a flag for years.

He said "That's okay mate but you've bagged my club now I'm going to break your ****ing jaw."

If only all players could be this passionate about their clubs. Good on ya Mark. :thumbsu:

Nice to see other club supporters have some nice things to say about Mark.

It just says alot about his character and how much he is respected in the AFL, definitely should be our next captain in a year or two.
Geese i wish there was a video on Youtube of it .

yes, the club has suffered an explosion of players running around thumping the opposition, terrible example mark

It has nothing to do with thumping people.

It's his body language, it's the way he stops making the ball his primary focus, it's the way he lets frustration creep into his game, it's the way he drops his second efforts.

The very thing a lot of people critisised Matthew Lloyd for early in the year, Mark McVeigh still displays. He did so on Sunday.

If that's true, then it shows how easily he is got in. That sort of stuff goes on all the time of the the ground. The overwhelming majority of players ignore it. Only d......ds react and risk frees, 50 metres and suspensions.

Get back in your little secure bubble!
Some players hit packs at full speed then some people dodge them! Some players bring there aggression to the floor eg, Mooney, Dermie, Hodge & some don't!

Brad Johnson bagging a club's premiership winning culture? I've heard everything now!

1 flag since their inception in 1925 for the Bulldogs - was Brad around in 1954 to witness it was he?

If any club is a sh*t club with no culture, it's definately the Dogs. Enjoy third position guys, I'm sure you'll find someway to screw it up like you have on those other rare finals appearences in the last eight decades.

WTF is Johnno thinking?

Bulldogs haven't won a premiership for 50 years.

What about when he lost the plot against the Bulldogs and was lucky to not be suspended.

He is too easily sucked in and Hille should be our next captain imo.

I'm a BIG McVeigh fan and had him earmarked as a future captain.... but that stuff V the Bulldogs was just stupid. In reality, he was probably lucky he didn't get a week or two.

With Lloydy playing up the ground and with renewed vigour, the captaincy probably won't be an issue for another year or two yet.

I must say that Hille really impressed me this year. Can't remember the match but I remember he dished-out two bone-crunching bumps within 30 seconds of each other. At the time, it stood out as the stuff of an inspirational skipper. Think we've got some good leaders at the club and another year or two of maturing could be all that McVeigh needs.

If that's true, it's pretty funny. The poor old Under-Doggies have built their entire culture around the sympathy of being an also-ran. What would any of those clowns know about a premiership-winning culture?!?!?!?

That said, a more mature head might have pointed out the irony at the time, rather than get rattled and risk a free-kick/50/suspension.

I reckon McVeigh would be pretty disappointed with his actions V the Bulldogs. He's certainly matured a lot over the past 12-24 months. This will continue. I wouldn't write him off. I love his passion but he still does need to be able to control and channel it.

Major man love for Spike, was at the game and saw him talking didn't know what he was saying obviously. Would love too see some footage as I don't have foxtel, youtube anyone?

Mark McVeigh is a great leader to have at any club let alone Essendon. His speech after the game against those 'Piss Week' Saints, just shows what a real leader is about. Essendon in my opinion should definetly put him as the next club captain. Remember these words "WE ARE ESSENDON!"

"Just quickly, remember this feeling, don’t ever forget it! We've had everyone injured, It starts today. Remember how bad it feels today, we’ll go out and do something next year. We’ll fu**ing do something! Remember this guys, lets get on with it, get in the preseason. This is us. Let’s do it. We are Essendon!"

I think thats it. Anyone hear differently? A few lines i kind of guessed.

The blues had "they know we're coming"

I can see "We are Essendon" being used in 2010 when we are painting the town red and black...think it sends an awesome message

Someone needs to YouTube this. I've taped it on Foxtel IQ and watched it about 10 times.

Not word for word but the general gist of it:

"Just quickly, I want to say something. Remember this feeling right now, don't ever forget it. We've had injuries, well, it starts today. Remember how bad it feels, lets go to pre-season and DO SOMETHING next year, let's F'N DO SOMETHING. This is us, let's do it, we are Essendon!!!"

Chills.

Yeah, awesome from McVeigh. He bleeds red and black

This thread shows why people are respected mods and others aren't.

Both Merv and Megatron Don/#30isAllah were the only two to bring up the fact that McVeigh gets sucked in too easliy and didn't get caught up in the speech.

Quite appropriate given the events of this week.

Ohhh....please don't tell me that you or anyone else on this thread think that McVeigh wouldn't deserve to be Captain because of the occasional week rubbed out or a fine here and there for wrestling...IMO...that is what puts him ahead of the pack...Toughness, hardness, spirit and all things red and black...exactly why he should be the next Captain

Barry Hall hit Sam Mitchel harder and only got an extra 50m penalty, I was sitting on Level 2 and the incedent nearly got ugly, Mcveigh didn't like the treatment that Sam Lonegran was getting.

McVeigh made a mistake, while trying to do the right thing. IMO it looked like he was going for a jump punch and didn't grip it quite enough, his body language afterward showed it wasn't his intentions. Him and Watson atm are the only candidates for Captaincy and wouldn't mind seeing them both have it.

I haven't stamped McVeigh's captaincy credentials based on this latest indiscresion.

The fact remains that he Captains can not put themselves in such situations which may result in getting suspended. I don't question his passion or leadership, but he can't keep getting suspended because he lost his cool.

The severity of the suspension or action is almost irrelevant. Just ask Cam Mooney.

Jonathan Brown is a great enforcer and tough player but he hasn't been suspended since being Captain.

FWIW I see it between McVeigh and Hille.
