Repost from a Nic Naitanui thread

Jusst wanna say, who cares if he doesn't make another All Australian. As I've got older I have come to the conclusion that AA is mainly just for kids to marvel at all star team and count the awards, doesn't mean too much. Naitanui has been top 2 or 3 ruck since 2011. Daniel Kerr and Dean Kemp made 1 All Australian, and Scott West and Brad Johnson 6. Fyfe and J Brown only have 2! It's folly to put massive credence on his career and memories whether Nicolas will make another AA, he is the ruckman of the decade
This

There has been better players who have only made 1-2 AA positions and guys who have 3-4 who are half the player as some of the guys who donbt have a AA jumper

Took S-Mitchell till about age 30 to win one

This guy was more of an AA accumulator(a testament to his consistency) than the best guy in his position year in year out.

Compare to Robert Harvey

Do interchange spots in the AA mean as much as other on-field positions? Is it fair to rate Ricciuto's 8 AA selections with 4 on the bench higher than someone with 6 AA's with none on the bench?

Riccuito's amount of AA's is used in arguments in his favour of his ranking among Hird, Voss, and Buckley.

Buckley 7 AA's. 7 on the field.
Voss 5 AA's. 5 on the field.
Ricciuto 8 AA's. 4 on the field.
Hird 5 AA's. 4 on the field.

A great kick, a clutch player, literallty as hard as nails, could play mid or forward or almost anywhere if he wanted, great poise, courageous as any player ever, inspirational captain, brownlow medalist.....just shut up.

Roo use to carry the ball well, 80 -90 metre player, long goals. Modra, McLeod close runners up for best player at crows.

His voice reminds me of:

If not for the Victorian bias, he would have been named in the starting 18, like in 1997 with 18 Brownlow votes... not that it really matters.

Roo & McLeod are comfortably the best 2 Crows players of all time.
Victorian bias...LoL

Like 2002, when Roo didn't even finish top 10 in the Crows BnF, yet was given an AA spot.

What in the world would compel you to even think about judging such an elite accomplishment by a player?? Seriously what is it that you want to get out of this question?

What sort of bloke thinks about this on the edge of summer?

The AA Selection process is flawed.

The Panel is made up of blokes who live and breathe football - in Victoria, plus a couple of token non-Vics. They know who the stars are in the non-Vic teams but are lost when discussing new talent or 'good solid' footballers North or West of the Murray. Players in Victorian teams who have a career season often make AA (Heretier O'Brien is a classic example), but NO ONE plying their trade outside Victoria does this.

The pay back is that, once a player becomes established as a STAR in a non-Vic team, he becomes the go-to man for the AA selectors. The most obvious beneficiaries of this are Ricciutto and Goodes, both of whom received multiple AA awards even in their average seasons. You can hear the selectors "The Swans did finish third so someone from there needs to get picked" "Hmmm good point. Goodsey can have Chappy's spot on a HFF"

I think you might be into something here. Goodes, Pavlich and Ricciuto seemed to be picked on default for a few seasons there.

But looking at the spread in the last 3 aa teams there are a couple of non-vic one season pop ins (rampe, gaffe, Greene)

Not sure why anyone would underrate Ricciutto.

Basically did for Adel what burgoyne does for the Hawks - change games in his team's favour by force of will.

This thread is like asking between a 9, 10 and 11 incher, who's utensil is the smallest?

Roo was a great footballer, probably not the true elite mids of the 00s like Cousins, GAJ, Voss, Hird & Simon Black but would be next level with players like Scott West, Lenny Hayes, Daniel Kerr, Dane Swan etc.
