Officeworks Managing Director Mark Ward will join the Richmond Board, filling a casual vacancy created by the retirement of long-serving director Maurice O’Shannassy.

O’Shannassy has served as Club vice-president since December 2004 and more recently has chaired the Club’s Risk, Compliance and Integrity Committee. Maurice was awarded life membership in 2014.

Club president Peggy O’Neal paid tribute to O’Shannassy’s contribution.

“We sincerely thank Maurice for all he has done for the Club over a long period of time,” O’Neal said.

“He has spent more than a decade on the Club board, assisting us to navigate through some difficult times, and it was wonderful to see him, like so many others, share the spoils of our 2017 success.

“We wish Maurice and his family all the best and no doubt will see him at the football proudly supporting the yellow and black.”

The Board accepted the recommendation of the nominations committee that Mark Ward fill the casual vacancy. Ward has spent the past 10 years as Managing Director of Officeworks, following four years as General Manager of Australian Operations at Bunnings Warehouse.

“We are pleased to announce that Mark Ward will fill the casual vacancy. He will officially commence 1 February,” O’Neal said.

“His experience in establishing Bunnings Warehouse, restructuring an established business (Officeworks) and working as part of the Westfarmers group, means we are bringing in a highly-experienced and skilled person who will make a significant contribution to this Club,” O’Neal said.

“Succession planning is something we are committed to as a Board and we continue to add new people with the right skills to ensure we thrive as a Club both on and off the field.”

Welcome aboard Mark

Small point, but isn’t it Wesfarmers rather than Westfarmers?

Nothing against the person but the way the board just keeps appointing it's members is really starting to annoy me.

Didn't we have an AGM just recently? Why didn't Maurice O’Shannassy stand down then and allow the members of the club to appoint a replacement?

Who was the last board member to be popularly elected (as opposed to being inserted and given the inside running of 'reelection')?

This is a casual vacancy, if it were full time I think it goes to election.

Except they're ALL appointed as casual vacancies, and stay on until they choose to leave (or get pushed from within). Who was the last Richmond board member who first joined the board through election?

A 'casual vacancy' is created and when it comes time for them to be elected, they go in with the advantage of incumbency and support from the rest of the board. That's how our board is 'selected'.

This current one...Well, it's a bit over a month since the AGM...Sure, I suppose it's possible that a guy who has been there for 13 years had this massive change of heart about his ability/capacity to serve in that time...but for that to happen EVERY TIME there is a change? It stretches credulity.

he will face the members, when the oshan term is up

if you dont like how casual vacancies work, take it up with ASIC

They can appoint humphrey bear as far as i care - We won the flag and Peggy/Brendon have licence to kill or thrill

I think Humphrey is a crows fan who did a tippet and went "home" to the GC

I don't think it is the way the ASIC rules for filling of casual vacancies work; rather it is the way the board so often has casual vacancies shortly after AGMs (within a month or two) and then uses the rules to appoint board members - rather than allowing members to vote in new board members. What they have done is totally within the rules; however it is a pity that winning a premiership can't go hand in hand with allowing RFC members to vote in new board members. Maybe the board should be more pro-active as they approach each AGM and ask if any board members are considering standing down some time in the next 6 months or so.
