It's pretty gobsmacking to think a bloke pocketing $300k a year to play in the most famous sporting comp in the land does crap like this in his spare time.
Not quite Aaron Hernandez types hobbies, but pretty big for this country.
His next book gunna have a chapter ~ spent a lot of his money on cars and drugs ~ wasted the rest.

Pickett was Rookie list for the early part, 300k at the end. Pickett did how long in jail?
6 months youth detention at 15. 18 months Prison Had mental health episodes in jail.
Noongar man, rough family.
miracle to get to near 100 games.
F... I miss his tackling.

Premiership players should be automatic father/son.

Some non-descript spud playing 100 games for a wooden spooner has eligible kids but not a dual premiership player with 90 games.

****ing joke
You want ginnivans potential kids to be f/s for Collingwood? Markovs? Framptons?

Cultural obligations that mean you give away your salary instead of building a better future for your kids is pretty far removed from what anyone would consider decent
It's really hard to fathom from our outside viewpoint looking in, but that's just how it works.

I've just finished reading the Trevor Noah book telling the story of his upbringing and he pretty much tells the same story being a young black (coloured in his case) man in Soweto. Anyone who makes bank is just expected to spread the wealth amongst the homies or be shunned, or usually worse.

Getting a leg up in those environments with those inherent cultural expectations/obligations is almost impossible.

Think the issue is it's a tribal thing, their families don't have a lot of money, so they feel obligated to give their money back to their families. It's not an excuse for what he did but imagine earning good coin and basically getting nothing back as its all given away.
The same with the wife's brother, he asked Marlion to assist and the strong family ties he feels obligated, almost forced to help, a vicious cycle he can't get out of.

Edit: sorry just read a few posts above mentioning the same thing.

Efa

If he can't hold it together in in a professional environment in Melbourne with all the support imaginable and away from all his dickhead mates and family then he's next to no chance now that he's gone. Odds on to end up in jail or dead. Poor kids.
You’re assuming a lot

He might not have coped well with the high pressure environment and the weight of expectations — he may do better in some low stress walk of life

Like the life in and out of jail he had before AFL? Blokes a lost cause.
Not many people are really lost causes (yes, some are)

Some people get clean on their 10th attempt or their 30th

Some people who were addicts and / or criminals and / or had mental health issues end up finding something that actually helps, or it finally clicks and they go on to make great contributions to society

I’m speaking from both personal and professional experiences — your experiences have probably been very different to mine

No doubt. Lets hope 🙏

Is Kurtley Thorne the wifes brother?

In juvi & jail. 12 month good behaviour bond for 2 of 12 charges. Took him with a rookie pick. ~ Pickett played great. 90 odd games. B&F up in Darwin too.
compared to Yarran. Carlton dropped 2015 for not meeting standards. then offered just under Dusty level money. Never played a game. 2019 5 years jail for a meth fuelled crime spree.
