Yeah he did handle anything ‘short but not short enough’ with relative ease when he was at his best
Good way to put it, that's exactly the description.

Khawaja used to be the same, but now when he plays it it looks like he's really forcing the shot as opposed to picking it up early and swooping on it like he used to.

A David Boon or Mark Taylor type player in the batting lineup would be very handy right now. Both good leavers of the ball who valued their wickets too.
Well, in theory, that's one of the things that gets mentioned just about every time Marnus bats - he's an excellent leaver and values his wicket.

Problem isn't his ability to fight through, it's that all he does now is fight through. There's no fluency or scoring options in his repertoire it seems.

With those guys it came comfortably. There was a degree of ‘naturality’ to scoring slowly, leaving regularly, blocking, and just putting away the ball in their zone, to how they played.

He definitely values his wicket, no one could argue otherwise, and no one could debate that he fights when he’s out there. I openly don’t really rate him all that highly and think he probably rode on the coat tails of some soft kills, good conditions - 55 Ave at home, 35 away - but you can bet your house on him giving his best every time he bats. The same can’t be said for, say, Travis Head who offers a lot more danger but realistically rarely digs in or values his wicket (an approach which isn’t without merit at times).

But when Marnus is blocking and leaving, as hard as he’s trying, he still looks so uncomfortable and desperate and like he’s fighting himself. Not like he’s fighting himself as in ‘boy I want to smash that ball but I’m gonna block/leave it’ but as in ‘boy I don’t know whether to block this off the front or back foot, boy I don’t know if I should leave this or block it, boy I don’t know where my feet are going’

There seems to be very little certainty with anything he’s doing, as hard as he’s trying

That late cut he constantly tries to play but consistently ends up being catching practice for the slips/gully 🤯

Reminds me of me………this is not a good thing!!

Should be straight back in for game 2. Easily in the top 4 batsmen in our country and going to be needed particularly once Smith and Usman go

You can really see why the selectors can not win. The public screaming for him to be dropped and he gets dropped and now there's plenty saying he shouldn't have been dropped.

Morons always want changes even if the players are the best for the job. We saw it with Warner and now Marnus. Unless someone is banging down the door you stick with the players who have got the job done in the past. Marnus Test average is better than the shield average of those looking to unseat him by 10 runs

Blewett said on commentary yesterday that he'd like to see Marnus go home and start his pre season training instead of hanging around for the next two tests to get things right so he can bang the door down before the Ashes.

For one thing he is without a doubt already doing that right now in the Caribbean (he's probably not lounging around on the beach all day sipping on pina coladas). For another, it's just pure hubris to think we can fly guys home who we think are ACTUALLY the best players just to make sure they are okay for a higher profile series. We saw where that sort of thinking got us in the WTC final. EVERY test match is important, we need the best available XI on the park every game, and right now our brittle lineup is getting their pants pulled down by the Windies. Get Marnus back in at 3 asap and stop fking around with Green in that slot.

Hopefully this will be the prelude for a career resurgence.

I agree with Blewett. Some time away from the squad entirely would be beneficial. Let him reset and find his game again.

Or back to county cricket and hopefully churn out some runs.

So is Bob Simpson's, but we're not going to select him because recent form matters. Particularly silly argument given Labuschagne's domestic statistics when he was selected in the first place.

His form currently has been on par with their form at shield level

He can go home in 2 weeks and do exactly that, as there's not much he can do i n that time to get ready for the ashes.

Gonna be hard in any case for Marnus to get back this summer as Cummins has already back in Konstas & Green for an extended run in the side.

They waited too long to pull the trigger and then they drop him when Smith can't play. They timing just doesn't make sense.

The time to drop him was during the Indian series but they kept the faith with him and then drop him anyway after a stand alone test.

Do you think Labs will push himself up to open the batting for Queensland at the start of the shield season?

I think they’ll give Green a decent run at 3 so it’s really the opening spot that’s the most likely way back into the test team.

you are probably right.

although have they back in konstas and usman for an extended period as well ?

either way there will be changes at the top of the order after a full summer of shield cricket and our next series v Bangladesh in the top end.

I think Khawja gets the summer before retirement regardless of his performance, only chance he doesn’t is through injury.

I don’t think they can afford to carry Konstas as well unless he has a really strong start to the shield season and puts his spot beyond doubt, at the moment he looks no where near ready for test cricket.

Plus still question marks around Green at 3 right now, but I think they’ll give him as much time as possible to adapt and hope he’ll be better in Australian conditions.

green will play in the top six come the ashes....debate to which position

You would think so. He’s proven at 3. If he can find form as an opener it would open up 3 spots for him.
