Can't believe I was so against it when people were talking about him being in the 1st Test side in England.

I'll put my hand up too. Remember him taking those catches at short leg as a sub fielder and thought who the f*** is this bloke. Kept an eye on him and he was even off contract for Queensland at one point. The turnaround from even getting back into the Queensland set up let alone into the Australian side has been truly remarkable. He has turnt into a genuine superstar. Incredible.

Any other guys out there that come from the clouds?

1. Street
2. Solway / Renshaw
3. Pucovski
4. Patterson
5. Fraser-McGurk
6. Green
7. Philippe / Inglis
8. Richardson

11. Pope

12. Salt

Any of these young 'uns ready to come from the clouds?

Salt is English

He’s got genuine claims as probably the best #3 in the world ahead of Pujara atm. Amazing.

After the English tour when he tweaked his technique, I said he looked a lot like Dravid, he’s certainly batting like him at the moment.

I think he is ahead of Pujara now.
He is more dynamic and a genuine 360 player.
Pujara is a gun but will always be a Robyn to a Kohli.
Marnus is our Batman right now.

I was really quite wrong.
It’s quite something how silly he’s made everyone look in such a short amount of time. Smith took a couple of years to make doubters look silly, Marnus took about 6 months

He's the glue our top 6 has lacked since Ponting's retirement, and if his current form continues, we'll be bloody hard to beat. Obviously there'll be a form slump at some point (even Bradman scored the occasional duck), but I'm glad he's on our side!!!

"For the record Labuschagne is technically one of the best batsmen to be picked for Australian of recent years".

Got attacked by all the Victorian fanboys on this site at the time for saying this in this thread and the thread 'January 4th Test Cricket' by all the usual suspects eddiesmith, frankconstanza, birdbrain, eth_dog, gavin excell, etc.

You're still on this? You're really a bitter person. I said I liked Labuschagne but he wasn't making runs. You're acting as if I said he was the worst player ever

EDIT: Just to further my point, here's a few posts of mine in 2016, showing how I rate Marnus:
In 5 years time I hope we see something like:

Bancroft
Labuschagne (optimistic, I know)
Smith (c)
Patterson
Handscomb
Head
Whiteman

As our top 7.
Hard to predict but I reckon it'll be somewhat like:

Renshaw
Weatherald
Patterson
Smith
Handscomb (watch the haters flock. Back him to fix his issues)
Stoinis (really highly rated by CA)
Whiteman/Carey/Peirson (+, really unsure about this one)
3x Cummins/Starc/Hazlewood/Tremain/Behrendorff/Richardson
Swepson

But really I can see Labuschagne, Heazlett, Cartwright, Lehmann, Doran and a few others getting a game as a batsman. Agar a possibility to be the spinner.
Although you'll probably focus on the Handscomb/Stoinis thing.

Well played Marnus, He has been a man on a mission, such a rapid rise. I’ll admit initially I had my doubts but he’s definitely put those to bed. Such a great story

Was at the SCG yesterday watching from square leg and he was incredibly composed throughout. Such a fluent batter, particularly on the legside. Just leant on the ball and timed it impeccably. What was particularly noticeable was his use of the crease (highlighted by the side-on view I had). He put off a few bowlers, particularly De Grandhomme by changing his movement into his final position forwards or back.

Seems to have a good array of strokes to spinners and uses his feet well (both for attack and defense). If he can score a century in the sub-continent, he will be one of the most complete batters we've had in some time.

To be fair, he clearly has an issue reaching 220 - if he can iron out this shortcoming, he might have more of an impact on world cricket.....
in all honesty he could do with less outside edges between 2nd and 3rd slip. probably the only part of his game that needs serious work at the minute.

In honour of his 4th century in 5 matches (and 6th 50 in 7), a current average behind only the GOAT, and his maiden double ton:

Containing such gems as:

I'm sure his solid 33 average and gentle leg spin will have the Indians running scared.

Langer spews all this s**t about how crucial runs and centuries are, then goes and picks Labuschagne and Mitch Marsh. If centuries aren't important, why doesn't he just pick Maxwell and Patterson to replace the Marsh bros? At least those two have a 40+ average...

A lineup of Harris, Burns, Khawaja, Patterson, Head, Maxwell would be solid.

Why? He was poor in the UAE. He's been abysmal in the Shield. He was picked on a hunch in the first place. There's no justification for this. None whatsoever.

Oh wow, this will definitely solve our batting woes. Wow wee, never mind Maxi or Burnsy let's go with Lagasaga.

Genuinely what is the thinking here? Is it because he looked okay in the UAE and it gives them another spin option? I thought the SCG doesn't even turn that much anymore? He looks much more organised than Mitch, but if you a want a spinning all rounder, WHY NOT MAXI?!?!?

Petition to call up Kurtis Patterson.

He's 25

He averages 41

He has 32 50+ scores in 58 matches

He is a long form specialist

He isn't the saviour but he is reliable & that's what Australia needs right now in its middle order.

I don't think it's a bad selection, but bowling is alright, especially spin. It's the batting that needs to be patched up, where's Maxi, Wade, Burns and Renshaw?

One person got it right and was downvoted to oblivion:

gunna go against the grain here and say this is a good pick. His stats don't show much of worth, but if you watched him play in the UAE, you'd see a 24 year old all-rounder who is gritty and applies himself well with the bat (even if his technique doesn't quite match up yet). He took 7 wickets @22 in that series (better than Lyon and Yasir Shah), and is an excellent fielder.

To me, it's a bit like when smith started against pakistan in 2010: the results weren't great on paper, but he just had a bit of magic about him, the guy that looked like he could change the game, given a bit of refining of his technical skills.

Besides, isn't this what everyone has been looking for, a wild card youngfella given the opportunity early cos smith and warner s**t the bed?

I am happy to admit I was one of the skeptics but nowhere near as vicious - were you?

La la la la la bamba. That should be his name going forward, no ifs buts or maybes

Apparently he needs 65 today to have the most runs in an Australian summer EVER!! He already has more than Bradman ever got. Unbelievable. Chapeau!

TBF one of the 'gems' you cited wasn't that bad, but I admit that I couldn't understand his selection at the time (considering his potential with the ball) and that if you told me he'd be doing this a year later, I'd ask you for the Gold/Tatts Lotto numbers.

Who do you rate at 4 out of interest? I usually only think of a Big 3.
I'm assuming he's referring to Martin Crowe's 'Fab Four' - Root, Kohli, Smith and Williamson.

Crowe wrote an article about them in 2014 when they were all about 20-30 Tests into their career, drawing parallels between their potential and development up until that point. He made several accurate predictions - that they would all captain their countries, that they would all swap the title of #1 Test batsman, and that Kohli would be the #1 ODI batsman.

Given Root's recent struggles some people have started referring to a 'fab 3' or 'big 3', but I think this misses the point of Crowe's use of the term. It was mostly about 4 prodigies with notable similarities coming of age at at a similar time, and being cornerstones for their respective countries' Test teams.
