Marquee Games

Marquee games, if not on holidays, are meaningless.

Dreamtime will attract over 80K. Well top 8 Richmond V top 4 Essendon would attract 80K anyway.

ANZAC Day probably throws about 5K on to the Pies V Bombers and QB helps out the Dees but apart from that so called Marquee games are just monikers stuck on to games that would sell anyway.

The clubs that have "marquee games" have them because their fans turn up. The clubs that do not have marquee games don't have them because their fans don't turn up.

Why would we abandon it to North? North fans feel the same way.

We just need to rotate who we play down there, especially with other Melbourne teams.

One of the two clubs is capable of standing alone in Victoria.

The other is North.

Get out of LAunceston instead of sucking the cash out of them and giving nothing back.

Rotating who you play there makes no sense unless you are rotating your least attractive games.. You will play Carl/Coll/Ess/Rich/Geel in Melbourne and you will rotate the rest to Tassie.

Are you going to take Carlton or Collingwood down there and play North or Freo in Melbourne? No. Just as we are not going to bring Carlton or Collingwood out of town this year when we can dump the Gold Coast game.

tbh I agree with you to an extent. all the historical big games are because they have september history.

however with so many teams in the comp now just chasing one prize, marquee games at least give something else to win during the season.

I find it amusing that Sydney supporters get tagged as theatre goers, yet the whole concept of marquee games is exactly that.

Sure.

But 4 games per year we can rotate between Eagles, Dockers, Power, Lions, Suns, Giants, Crows, Roos, Dogs, Saints, Demons etc.

It doesn't need to be the same teams every year.

I would rather not have a marquee game down there.

You are right that the attendances are not increased a great deal from what they would be anyway, but what about television audiences, that may be where there are increases for marquee games?

The Queen's Birthday round is the big worry with Melbourne V Collingwood. They were rivals in the 50's, it's time to move on. Collingwood play Carlton and Essendon twice each year, it's time they looked at the return game against one of these teams on Queen's Birthday Monday!

Christ, I hate having to endure the artificiality of Richmond v Carlton or Richmond v Essendon. God damn, why can't we just have a legitimate rivalry like the showdown. Really grinds my gears, after all we've been playing both of those clubs for 120 years. You'd think a history would have built up between the clubs. But nope. Nada. Zip.

interesting you have that view considering the way KB rabbits on about RIC's biggest rival being CAR. I assume at the time he played, it was the team he and his team mates really wanted to beat.

Good Friday the last holiday without a game.

Should be played every year by any of these I think

Carlton v Essendon
Hawthorn v Essendon
Collingwood v Carlton

People may have an issue with Essendon getting so many marquee games, so Carlton v Collingwood the most likely

Would be epic

It'd be nice if these 'holiday' games were rotated once in a while. The marquee events are just a leg up to the same rich clubs who play in them every year.

The other side is we have all these set fixtures because it's 'traditional', we may as well play the same fixture every season. At least it'd be fair to the point where no-one could argue year to year favouritism.

North/Blues for me just due to the proximity to the RCH.

I'd also be wanting a decent chunk of the profits made on the day to be donated to the appeal - the game will cut the appeals telecast by 4 hours, which may reduce the appeals ability to keep the phones ringing. And this profit contribution should not just from the gate returns the clubs get - C7, Spotless, MCC will all make good coin on the day, and all should dedicate a good chunk from their profits to be donated specifically from the game.

Both clubs should also make a big effort promoting the appeal (which I imagine they will want to do anyway), so make the game as much about helping the RCH as possible (and like ANZAC Day it will boost the support from neutral supporters). Get the players promoting the appeal, ramp up hospital visits, and get non playing players to visit the hospital and work the phones on the day.

Not only could this be a great game for the two clubs, it could do a lot for helping further maintain the high profile the RCH appeal has in this state.

There is so much rubbish ITT. Essendon getting marquee games? Maybe Essendon (Collingwood/Richmond/whoever as well) just happen to be a club with a proactive marketing department who develop these ideas and a large supporter base who go to their games. By all mean give some of the smaller clubs the marquee fixtures but don't for a second think that Nth vs Footscray will draw 85k because they're in the dreamtime at the G match.

I though about replying to this, but didn't know where to start and won't bother.

Re-read my post and then perhaps think about deleting your reply.

It wasn't really directed at your post, merely the comment about people having a problem with Essendon getting marquee games. The big clubs make the marquee fixtures into marquee fixtures.
