Marriage in the end is a civil contract.

Every wedding has the celebrant, minister or whatever silly hat wearing person who runs the show, have the Happy couple & witnesses sign legal documents. The wedding is NOT legal until those documents are signed, witnessed & lodged at the appropriate Government registry. The show in a church wedding, or anywhere else, means NOTHING in law. Its all about the civil contract signed by the participants & those being registered.

The brain damaged lobby voting no simply miss the whole point & are happy to 'mystify' the whole affair to suit their own hateful agenda.

God save their vicious & damaged souls.
Marriage is a contract, full stop.

The terms of that contract have always been set by law.
Until the late 80's there was no such thing as marital rape because of the terms of the marriage contract.

If parliament doesn't vote YES, despite there being a majority who are in favour, do you seriously think that will be the end of it? It will merely be the beginning of chapter 97. More fun for the government leading up to an election dominated by this topic. Lovely.
They will vote Yes. Enough of them will, that is.

You dont have to particularly like someones predilections or life choices, but you can support fairness, equality, equity & the desire to love & be loved in a non judgemental way.

A mate married a lady I see as rude, selfish, self centred & a bloody dragon. But thats his choice for a happy wifey, happy lifey. I respect that. I think he's mad!! But hey, its a funny world & he's happy in it & he's still my mate.

Her, I learned to tolerate. ;)

Not quite true. But it did take a ridiculous number of decades to fix after it was first admitted to being a serious issue.

I'm indebted to the no posters in this thread. Here I was thinking that the ones being bullied were frightened teenagers struggling with their sexuality in rural and regional towns. However clearly the real victims are well-fed News Limited columnists who cry bully when someone points out the hollowness of their argument and claim to be silenced despite their swathes of newsprint/radio shows and television programs.

My bad didnt read it properly.

Here's some studies concluding that homophobia and minority distress/discrimination has a direct link with mental health outcomes, and that gay marriage actually has mental health benefits.

Study: The impact of homophobia, poverty, and racism on the mental health of gay and bisexual Latino men: findings from 3 US cities.
Study: The mental health benefits of relationship formalisation among lesbians and gay men in same-sex relationships
Have you got links for these studies? The devil is in the detail.

To conclude that societal factors and social stigma don't play a part (or the main part) in homosexual depression rates is just an incredible conclusion to make. Even the hardened bigots like Bernardi and Abetz wouldn't have the gall to make that contention.
I didn't draw that conclusion. But it's typical of the yes side to misrepresent the opposing argument. What I'm saying is that the assumption that the higher rates of mental illness, suicide and domestic violence are wholly due to societal pressure could be incorrect - and counter-productive. There's no clear evidence for it.

Can't believe it, one address gets 5 letters and only two people live there (have all ticked No) and I still haven't received my letter.

Has Australia Post come out as a vote No establishment?.....Perhaps your postie is in on the plot.....The neo-cons on your street are onto you.;)

Is this meant to be some deep existential haiku or something?

Atheists dont think life is meaningless, just that the meaning isn't gonna be written in the bible or Quran etc. equality isn't meaningless at all especially when you remove religion from the marriage argument which is precisely what we're doing by encrouagong a yes vote.
If the pretty little athiests don't think life is meaningless then they are cowards.

Too late, I already voted yes, so did my normally bigoted Dad. He is learning from me. He has accepted SSM and now he now longer votes One Nation. Us younger generation can still teach the old buggers the right way. :thumbsu::rainbow::p
You know he says that so you shut up, right? Secretly he cries inside that he raised a pozzed son like you who believes that age and experience is second to being young and 6 months into a liberal arts degree.

******* bigot. Why can't an institution get married?
How long have you been ****ing bigots? Good for you, I suppose. Really though, you could afford to be a little more selective in with whom you choose to have carnal relations. Then again, maybe not.

I know your brother. He said he hates sitting next to you at Christmas time cause you are an asshole. You really do try too hard at times. Just like Basil Zempalis.

You don't know my brother. He's an even bigger pudendum than you are, so you two would get on well. As with you, I wouldn't have anything to do with him, other than an optimistic occasional perusal of the death notices in newspapers.

It's possible. I'm saying the commonly accepted view that the higher risk factors are due to societal pressure is not supported by the evidence.
I didn't draw that conclusion. But it's typical of the yes side to misrepresent the opposing argument. What I'm saying is that the assumption that the higher rates of mental illness, suicide and domestic violence are wholly due to societal pressure could be incorrect - and counter-productive. "Is not supported by the evidence" is a vastly different statement to "there's no clear evidence". One is absolute, the other is not. Suggesting something is not supported by the evidence holds a clear implication that the evidence proves the contrary. It is tantamount to saying that whatever is not supported by the evidence is not factually correct.

Of course, nuances of language aside, logic clearly contradicts you. The studies and metanalyses that have been cited contradict you.

Don't try to make yourself feel better by engaging in mental acrobatics (which defy the laws of logic) to say that it is unlikely a lack of social acceptance has an effect on the heightened suicide attempts/rates. It's clear a lack of a sense of belonging, borne out by debates with people like you, is directly correlated with the heightened self-harm of these individuals.
