He was pretty confident about it too, as if it was a done deal.

Jars has obviously got the same story, so I'd be surprised if there isn't some substance to it.
I will not be a happy chap if Parker is not promoted and a dud like Smith is kept on the list. In fact I am really p|ssed off at the moment.

According to some members on this board - absolutely nothing.

The facts are in front of us and the writing is on the wall... unless the club can conjure some miracles and soon, we could be in for some lean seasons to come.

They do make the odd mistake now & again but what club doesn't ?? & i reckon our club makes less blunders than most other AFL clubs going around the place.

According to the experts we was supposed to have been having lean seasons in the 3 years just gone but we was still around the mark.

I prefer to remain on the side of the faithful & am looking forward to next year & beyond with a great deal of optimism & maybe another flag to hang besides the 2 we already have.

ps, when is the cut off date for promoting rookies from last year ??

Noddy, this is the calendar of things to come as per the AFL site.

Fri 31 Oct - List 1 lodgement: 2004 Draft

Fri 14 Nov - List 2 lodgement: 2004 Draft
Wed 12 Nov - Draft nominations close
Wed 19 Nov - Delisted Player Nomination Deadline
Sun 23 Nov - National AFL Draft. 11am Melbourne Park Function Centre
Tues 2 Dec - Uncontracted Listed Player Nominations
Fri 5 Dec - International Rookie Nominations
Fri 5 Dec - List 3 Lodgement: 2004 Draft
Fri 12 Dec - Delisted Player Nominations
Tues 16 Dec - National AFL Pre-Season Draft

Obviously we can promote off the rookie list until at least the 1st date of 31/10, and maybe even up until the 2nd date of 14/11. The same would apply to delistings.

Hopefully my mate got his Friday's wrong and Parker will be promoted this week with Smith being delisted.

I always worry about the longevity of Victorian 18 year olds on our list - either through their choice or the club's! So I will be nervous about who we choose - I hate the thought of it being wasted.

And it makes you wonder how Smith has lasted hear so long seeing he hasnt had a game. [not counting preseason]

Question - who has been our best performed draft pick that we got in the top 20? - Brett Burton? - could Reilly be it down the track?

And - no question who is the worst!!

I'm thinking recent years - my memory of the early 90's is a bit vague - how did we get 'Roo?

"Clubs must finalise and submit their playing lists to the AFL by October 31."

So are taking bets on the Smith-Parker thing??

Roo was one of our pre-draft selections, before our second season. I think Ben Hart was a second seaosn pre-draft as well (though he might have been first year) and Modra was certainly a second year pre-draft. As was Seb Packer! Don't know why I remember him ...

Then again even if Smith is delisted, doesn't mean Parker will be elevated - not sure about the vice-versa situation!!

At the end of 1991, we were not allowed to participate in the draft (until mid 92 when we got Jim West and Andrew Geddes)but we could recruit 8 SANFL players or uncontracted South Aussies. The 8 players added to the list for 1992 were:

Anthony Ingerson
Anthony Modra
Seb Packer
Mick DiBiase
Sean Wellman
Ben Hart
Mark Ricciuto
Chris Groom

The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades was the slogan for 1992.

Cheers macca, i hope i'm wrong but do the Crows hierarchy know something about Parkers make-up that we don't ?? & i keep going back to when Skipworth was promoted off the rookie list & not Parker which was a little strange at the time as we were crying out for talls, but if Parker was/is as good as everyone has been saying "why was this so"????

As i have said before i have never seen Parker play & for that matter young Smith so i can only go on what you guys say but for Stiffys sake at least i do hope to hear of Parker being promoted before the end of October.

I think you will find it hard to find anyone who could justify Smith's place on our list ahead of Parker (except Smith's family & friends).

I really find this an odd situtation. Everyone that I talk to in football circles has only positive things to say about Aidan Parker. From the day he came to train with us last year to this very day I have only heard good things about Parker.

I have watched him play a few times this year and I was only a little bit disappointed on one occasion where he burnt the ball a bit but he still kept his man in check. His 2nd half of the season was superb.

If we don't hold on to Parker I think I will need to book myself in for a heart surgery. I will need a bipass:(

I still cannot figure out the reasoning behind this decision. The only reason I can possibly come up with is that Smith might still be under contract next year.

I tried finding out what the rules are in realtion to the Rookie List..........but I wasn't very successful.

If we could find the rules, maybe it would shed a bit more light on this one.

I am still confident that Aidan will be promoted from everything I have seen, he certainly deserves to be.

I got the following from one of the "Info Sheets" available on the AFL site, here is the link

"Rookie List
The Rookie List has been a recent but popular introduction into AFL football. Each club is allowed to select a maximum of six players to be placed on the rookie list to take its total number of players to 44. A player must be aged between 18 and 23 years of age to be selected on a Rookie List. If players are placed on a
club's Rookie List in another state they are contracted for two years, otherwise the period of certain tenure is one year. Players selected in the Rookie List can be elevated to the primary list during the season, but a player from the primary list must be delisted or a place already exist for this to occur. Players elevated from the Rookie List must fit under the club's Total Player Payments cap. When this elevation occurs, a player must be paid according to the conditions ascribed in the AFL/AFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement. The first AFL player elevated to a club’s senior list from its rookie list was Mal Michael in 1997 when he was with Collingwood. In 2001, he was traded to the Brisbane Lions. Clubs which participate in the VFL (replacing the reserves competition) also nominate players as top-up list players. These players cannot be elevated to the primary list during the season."

So where's the bit about Port being able to snatch one of our players, one year into a two year contract?

You're right Dave, it is not mentioned in the info sheet, nor have I been able to find it anywhere else in the AFL site.

I have sent an email to the AFL asking for clarification, below are the questions I asked.

"I wish to question the rules relating to Rookie listed players. If an interstate player is Rookie listed by an AFL club, he is guaranteed a 2 year contract. If at the end of his first year as a Rookie, he is NOT promoted to the main list by his AFL club, is he available to be drafted by any of the other 15 clubs? Or does he HAVE TO remain a Rookie listed player at the club which originally selected him as a Rookie?
Your assistance will be much appreciated"

Thats music to my ears:D

BUT is this the new rule??????I remember in 2002 Port had Crabb from WA as its rookie and he was delisted after one year. I assume that Port payed out the remaining year of his contract??????

Stiffy, it is still not an answer if another club wishes to draft the guy onto their main playing list, hopefully the AFL will answer my email.

The another point you raise about Jaxon Crabb is an interesting one Stiffy.
I believe in his case it was possible for him to be on a Rookie List for ONLY one season due to his age.

All that means is that the Rookie List rules are full of "ifs, buts and maybes".

This is just a comment, coz I haven't sat down to try and figure out a better system, if there even is one?

Yes BUT if there is a rule that states he is to stay on a rookie list for 2 years then no other club can touch him because he would have signed a rookie contract with the AFC for 2 years. You cannot select a bloke that is under contract with another club unless its via trade.

Its an interesting point with Crabb. He did turn 23 and was not allowed to be on a rookie list the following year. Maybe there is a clause in the 2 year rule.

What I find interesting is that some other clubs have made their rookie delistings public when they announced their delistings BUT not a word from AFC about our rookie listed players except Skippy's promotion.

I am certain we can keep Parker on the rookie list for another season. Carlton are keeping Angwin on the rookie list even tho he is a Victotian picked up as a rookie by a victorian club.

Too confusing.:(

I directed this email to the AFL on the 26/10/03, AFL Query (KMM13318947V70992L0KM).

I was hoping to hear from them within a week, no luck there, will have to see if they can reply before a fortnight elapses.

If I had to bet on an outcome, I'd say that selection onto a Primary Playing list, is a priority over any contract to remain on a Rookie list.

So I'm saying that guys like Parker (Crows), Patfull (Power) & Angwin (Blues), are still open season, but if no-one bites to put them on a Main playing list, they have a fallback position of Rookie list contracts.

That's my guess at this stage.

I can't say you're wrong, because I don't really know.

But if I had to guess I would have thought just the opposite.

By signing a rookie contract, surely a player agrees to remain a rookie for the period of that contract. I would have thought that commitment included not being able to nominate for the draft which is the only way that a player can get drafted.

So my guess would have been that Parker (Crows), Patfull (Power) & Angwin (Blues) won't be nominating for the draft and therefore won't get drafted.

But that's only my guess.
