Irish Coup

Young Irish Gaelic football star, Martin Clarke, has signed with the Collingwood Football Club as its first ever International Rookie.

The promising youngster has recently returned to Ireland after spending five weeks in Melbourne at the Lexus Centre, where he trained with the Collingwood squad, as well as receiving specialist skills training in the Collingwood Youth Academy, with Academy director, Alan Richardson.

It is widely acknowledged that the 18-year-old Clarke, is one of most promising Irish youngsters in Gaelic football, winning recognition in his home country as the driving force behind his St Louis Kilkeel team reaching the MacRory Cup final over the past two seasons, and playing a key role in Down's All-Ireland minor triumph last year.

Clarke will join Collingwood in early in October, when he with enter the Collingwood Youth Academy on a more permanent basis, where, under the watchful eye of Richardson, he will continue his development and AFL skill acquisition.

Richardson was impressed by Clarke’s capacity to take on new skills in his recent stay in Australia, and the former Collingwood defender is looking forward to working with the young Irish talent day-in, day-out, as the Gaelic star begins his transition to a promising AFL star of the future.

“Martin was very impressive. The speed at which he has been able to pick up the skills of our game, and the speed of our game, and the technical facets of each skill.

“He has a thumping kick. He can already kick the footy over 50 metres, and for a guy who is not overly powerfully built and not a huge body mass, that’s pretty impressive. We’re pretty happy with that and don’t need to add to that too much, But what that shows us is that he is going to be a player who plays with penetration. ‘A’ because he can run and ‘B’ because he is going to get it there pretty quickly.”

Clarke’s progress has been closely observed by Collingwood Recruiting Manager, Derek Hine, who has followed the Gaelic stars development for over two years. Hine was responsible for bringing Clarke out to Australia for an initial familiarisation visit earlier this year, and was equally delighted that Clarke has decided to move to Australia to sign with the Collingwood Football Club.

“The exciting thing for us is, given Martin’s Gaelic background, and his anticipated development, both physically and in a football sense – the sky is the limit,” Hine told collingwoodfc.com.au. “That coupled with his desire, work ethic and professionalism all bodes well for the future.”

“The Club have been really impressed with the speed that he has been able to pick things up. He’s a really intelligent young man, from a great family. His capacity to learn and his physical capabilities give him an enormous chance of developing to play at the elite level.

“If you look at the example of Colm Begley, who came into the system from Ireland with the Brisbane Lions last October – he debuted last weekend against West Coast at senior level.”

Hine identified Clarke as the stand-out talent at the MacRory Cup over 2 years ago, and has tracked the youngster since, seeing him develop with promise. Then, at an invite only training camp in 2005 in Limerick, Ireland, Clarke was again the stand-out athlete on show.

Hine believes Clarke has what it takes to develop in to a promising player for the future, with vision and endurance, and a natural thirst for competition.

“Martin’s endurance is already up around the best of any player at the club. Even with his limited training in Ireland. That along with his evasive speed gives him a real opportunity to run through the middle of the ground.

“One thing that you can’t teach is vision and game sense in contested situations and he is very good in those areas.

“He is the best player in Ireland.”

While im all for the mighty Pies signing up the best young talent they can find, I would like to know how this fits in with the AFL draft process as I cant quite get my head around how a young player can be 'signed' prior to the draft.

This is one possible exception to the draft process.

The AFL allows teams to be able to rookie list international players (ie Kennelly, Begley, O'hAilpin, etc) rather than have them go into the draft, since they are international and not in the same situation as local footballers. Then, the same rules apply to them, eg there must be a vacancy on the list and they must be elevated to the senior list if they are to play a senior game.

The NSW (Scott Reed) exception is different also. The AFL, in an attempt to get youngsters with potential before they get poached by other sports (ie rugby, soccer), allows each club to select one or 2 players aged between 15 and 18 to "develop". This may involve a few weeks of training with the senior group, or special training, or some sort of thing. The clubs then have the opportunity to draft these players (when they come of age) at the expense of a final round draft pick. This is not regulated by any draft either, simply a first signed arrangement.

The AFL have permitted clubs to have a free hit at overseas kids on your rookie list, as technically, they are very outside prospects. Still, picking up the best young prospect in Gaelic Footy is a reasonable roll of the dice for a rookie pick.

The NSW set-up is part of youth development, which encourages kids them to aim high in AFL, as they can end up getting scholarships. We picked up the highest rated NSW kid in the country, who is a Swans supporter no less. The Swans have had pretty serious questions asked at board level as to why he wasn't signed up with them. If we think he's worth picking up, he will cost us our last draft pick in the National Draft.

As with all kids, anything can happen though, but it's still nice to see we're using all legal methods to source the best possible talent.

We may have really taken advantage of both rules. Getting (according to the article) one of the best players in Ireland and also one of the best young (Very young) prospects from NSW for next to nothing. Scott Reed, with his family from Melbourne originally, may have always been destined for AFL rather than NRL. As I understand it Freo as well as Sydney were trying to get him and the zone you can draft from isn't all of NSW I think.

Without putting undue pressure on the kid or getting ahead of myself, the attributes that Hiney described that Clarke possesses (top notch endurance, toughness, booming kick, good awareness and vision in tight, good evasive speed) the kid has got centresquare midfielder (ie centreman, ruck rover, rover) written all over him. Could be a great addition to the Magpie midfield in the next 24 months.

Might be really hoping this kid pans out and becomes the best AFL player Ireland has produced. Likely won't be getting someone with the kind of raw tools he possesses unless we move up in the draft. Based purely on what was said by Alan Richardson and Derek Hine, if he adapts he could end up the best. At least he will likely get in the full pre-season which the draft picks won't.

I've got high hopes for Clarke. There's a lot to be said for naturally ability, plus, apparently he puts in the hard work too - both ingredients to success.

However, even though he'll be joining the club in October and will benefit from a full pre-season, I think he'll still take a while to adapt to our game. Not expecting too much from him in '07, though happy for him to prove me wrong.

Colm Begley made his debut for the Lions in his first season and Clark is supposed to be much more talented. Not to mention he seems to be picking up AFL phenomenally quickly. Even if you having a thumping long kick with other balls in other codes, you don't just pick up an AFL ball and kick over 50 metres unless you are something pretty special.
