PIKE SET TO NOTCH MAJOR CAREER MILESTONE

Experienced campaigner Martin Pike reaches a major personal milestone when he plays his 200th premiership game of AFL football at the Gabba on Sunday.

Pike has played in each of the Lions’ premiership wins in the last two years, and played in four of the last five grand finals. He is the only triple premiership player active in the AFL in 2003, having also won a flag with the Kangaroos in 1999.

Pike played 24 games for Melbourne, 36 games for Fitzroy, 81 with the Kangaroos, and now 58 games with the Brisbane Lions. Pike’s tally with Fitzroy is added to his Brisbane Lions tally in the Lions’ official records, giving him a total of 94 club games.

Keep an eye on www.lions.com.au on Wednesday evening for a full interview with Pike about reaching the milestone.

Good onya Pikey!
Seems to be playing with as much enthusiasm and passion as anytime in his career. One of the smartest draft selections the Lions have made.

the thing i like about Pikey is he isnt a showpony...he's not flashy and seems to have this air of coolness about him where i could imagine him saying 'why show off, just shutup and play'...no handstands for martin pike...
i;ll be there cheering this champ on on sunday as i have since he joined....WELL DONE

Well done Pikey - this bloke is definately worth more than base payments.

After an ordinary start to the season, he is definately back to playing his best footy.

Immediately after the 2002 GF, Brown says something like: "We'll have a big night tonight Pikey"

Pikey:"Yea, I reckon you're right Browndog"

Pure understatement.

MARTIN PIKE

Martin Pike spent the first two seasons of his AFL career with Melbourne before he was traded to Fitzroy at the end of 1994. A hard-running half-back, he rapidly developed into one of the Club’s most influential players and won Fitzroy’s final Best & Fairest award in 1996 before being drafted to North Melbourne following the merger. He played in the Kangaroos' losing Grand Final in 1998 and was a member of their premiership winning team the following year against Carlton. After 81 games with his third AFL club, Pike moved to Brisbane in 2001 where he was an immediate part of three successive premiership winning teams. Pike played in his sixth AFL Grand Final in 2004 - albeit a losing one - and remained with the Lions until he retired in 2005. He finished with a total of 142 games with the Club.

Pike finds life and football rosier
September 27, 2003

Nunan appeared as a character witness for Pike at the Melbourne Magistrates Court in July 1996, when the 23-year-old was given a six-month jail term, reduced to a community-based intensive corrections order, for his third drink-driving offence.

Nunan, seven years on, is not as surprised as some at the fine football citizen Pike, nearly 31, has become. He is remembered at one of Fitzroy's last training sessions, cursing to himself as he ran laps of the Coburg Oval as punishment for messing up a routine circle work drill.

"But he did it," Nunan said. "I enjoy the man. He was basically extremely tough. It didn't matter what he'd got himself into. He didn't try to walk away or hide. He didn't lie.
"He was the one who took it, don't let there be any doubt about that. He took the second major step when he got into the North Melbourne environment and the next when he got to Brisbane."

1999 Kangaroos Premiership
2001, 2002, 2003 Brisbane Premierships

Martin Pike holds the honour of being Fitzroy’s final best and fairest winner in 1996, and is considered a true journeyman of AFL football. A four-time premiership player, and veteran of four clubs, he will be remembered as a fierce, uncompromising defender.

Drafted by Melbourne with their first choice in 1992 (number nine overall), Martin Pike has always shown the ability needed to establish a league career. After two years at Melbourne, Pikey was traded to Fitzroy in 1994 where he began to develop into a hardened midfielder.

Despite being ironically overlooked in the merger between Brisbane and Fitzroy, he eventually found his way to Queensland, but not before four successful years with the Kangaroos.

At the Gabba, he was hard, loyal and popular, running all match, hunting collisions and setting up play with thoughtful passing. He was rarely beaten in one-on-one duels, a coach's treasure. The only time you saw him relaxing was at grand final parades.

When he reportedly headbutted a Lions official after the 2004 season, the club denied (and still does) it happened and gave him another contract. The club officials' silence was a tribute to their "Pikey".

i loved martin pike, from the time he was discarded by melbourne for being a drunken deadbeat, to the time he was part of out three-peat.

not many players can boast four premiership medals and six grand finals

he is a great example of someone who confronted his demons and overcame them. fev should get in his ear and take note.

Does not surprise me. An absolute legend, and 1 of my all time favorites. How many times, when we needed a goal, did Pikey take a 1 grab mark & drill it. When needed he always produced. And, in retrospect, thanx for that headbutt Pikey.

A silly comment a few days ago about Gary Ablett mentoring Fevo - but a few 1 on 1's with Pikey would do him no end of good. Pikey was just as irresponsible - but always took his medicine & worked his way out of it. Could not get a better man to lean on, so to speak.

Would love to have been at that legends game. Gave them 50 years & a touch up. The main game does not hurt so much now.
