Sounds like a bloke who needs convincing with money....

Also sounds like a bloke who picks his ball up and walks back to mum when he's dropped..

funny how the 3 irish papers have the same story..... it must be because to be sure....to be sure.....to be sure...that its printed correctly...

Don't Think money was the Problem though did sound he Chucked a Nick Davis when he could not get back in the AFL Side

Well what i'm saying is that he sounds weak and indecisive....normally people like that will change their minds if you bring a barrow of cash before their eyes..

He might need regular "top-ups" if the newspapers start giving him a hard time again...

sounds like a good candidate for gold coast..

In the Inner Sanctum pre match speech before the Geelong game someone asked Gavin Brown if he thought marty was coming back. Browny said he wasn't sure but he said that Hine was very confident of getting him back. He also mentioned that he'd heard marty would need a lot of conditioning work to get back to AFL fitness, his skinfolds might have blown out a bit with some home cooking.

Has Marty been on the Ulster frys?

The thing about this rumour about Marty returning is that its seems just more than word of mouth - the club has been asked directly (eg Pert in interview) so they seem optimistic. :thumbsu:
I have no doubt that he'll return next season. It's going to take a full twelve months for the club to help him organise a few things such as his bringing over his Irish girlfriend, and his ambition to continue his teaching studies. The best thing for him was to leave in the meantime.

Where did you get that from? From what I understand, he felt that he deserved to be playing VFL, and that he never was upset about being overlooked for the seniors. Last season was his third year of senior footy, and he felt that it was coming too easily for him and had not put in the same amount of work as he had done previously. Despite that, he was very close to being selected in the finals.
Also sounds like a bloke who picks his ball up and walks back to mum when he's dropped..
My goodness. You've certainly jumped to some completely unfounded conclusions. Clarke realised himself that he didn't deserve to be playing senior footy, and that had nothing to do with his decision to leave.

You're being completely unfair. From what I understand, it had more to do with his girlfriend in Ireland, and his desire to become a teacher, which are both issues that Collingwood are trying to help with him. The financial gain is just an important factor of course, but obviously not the main issue otherwise he would not have left in the first place.
Sounds like a bloke who needs convincing with money....
Sounds like a bloke that needed help regarding how he can legally study in Australia to become a teacher, and how to bring his girlfriend legally to Australia so she can work too.

How do you know all this stuff?

I don't think KS knows all this stuff, it is just KS's interpretation of what has occurred from late last season through to now, and how Marty came about the decision to go home.

I agree with most of what KS said, but really, no one hear knows exactly why Marty went home, and whether or not he is coming back or not.

If I was a betting man (oops I am:o), I would place money on Marty being in black and white next year, as I understand it's not too hard to get someone a work or study visa for 2-3 years in Australia (regarding Marty's partner) so I'd say Collingwood and Marty are probably in the process of organising that now.

He still may not come back, but all signs point to him being back at Collingwood next year, and despite what anyone's personal feelings are on Marty, he would be a great addition to our already strong playing list, especially with the "distorted" draft system at the moment.

Now this actually makes a shetload of sense! His Visa may thrown up issues in regards to studying and planning for life after footy. Although there is always off-campus learning through distance education (Dunno whether or not it is an option in Ireland)

Collingwood rule out Clarke return
29 May 2010

Collingwood have poured cold water on speculation that Martin Clarke could return to the AFL some day.

Collingwood's recruitment manager Derek Hine, who visited the Down star on a recent trip to Ireland, said: "I know Martin really well and of course we'd love him to come back at some point in the future but at no stage has he indicated to the club that he would like to do that.

"In all the communication and all the conversations we've had, both in Ireland and since I got back, he's never indicated that. And I wouldn't ask him. I just wouldn't put him in that position."

While Clarke recently revealed that he would never rule out a return to Australia, Hine said the An Riocht clubman was happy to be back home.

"I went to watch him play a game when I was over there and he played really well, which is an indication of how happy he is and how comfortable he is in what he's doing.".

Clarke, who will make his long-awaited Ulster SFC debut for Down against Donegal in Ballybofey tomorrow, played 46 Premiership games for Collingwood before returning home last September to resume his Gaelic football career.

"We really hope that it goes well for him. Martin stayed with me and my family for three years when he was out here and I talk to him regularly, as friends do," Hine added.

Big Dissapointment and just says he was a Waste of Time and Devlopment to the Club.

Hope he does well in the GAA but Thanks for Nothing Marty

I disagree entirely. Marty was fanastic for the club. Played 46 great games which is a fantastic output for anyone to come off a rookie list! Also now thanks to Marty we now have a strong fan base in Northern Ireland. So for many reasons he was great for this club. His going home was unfortunate for the Collingwood Football Club, but for him it was a the right move. Means he can be closer to family and friends. For example if you had a job overseas for a few years would you not consider at any point moving home? No form of employment is more important than family, friends and being happy. Even a professional sporting career. I certainly support his decision because I am sure he made the right one for himself, his family and his friends.

I can't see why you would be disappointed in Marty.
He did not start the rumours of his return.

Marty did his job while he was here and left because he was finding it difficult.
He owed Collingwood nothing more than he gave.

The article's headline doesn't really match the content anyway. Not saying it's likely to happen or anything, but nowhere in that article did Collingwood rule out Clarke returning.

I still think he might get the bug after he plays a season over there, maybe wins a premiership or something and believes he has acheived what he wanted.

Or he stays and it's no big loss. Either way I'm not overly phased tbh.

Nothing against Clarke he came and did what could those but when he was Dropped for Awhile he went home.

It was more for the Pies as that could been a Aussie Kid on the Rookie List who could of been a AFL Player and on our Senior List

Dave your logic is way off. IIRC international rookies where outside the general rookie system. So he wasn't taking an "aussie" kids spot at all. On top of that I find it almost impossible to believe that the "aussie" rookie would have performed anywhere near as well as Marty did during his time in our system. On top of that I dare say the home sickness was part of the reason he performed so poorly in his last year. It was probably a case of both him and the club going through the motions.

He gave his all during his time at the club and that is all you can ask. He owes us nothing IMO. You can't hold it against someone that they don't want the things you want.

I rate Marty's talent extremely highly, with that said I would not want him to come back. I don't think it's in anyones best interest. He would not be a lock for best 22. Our side is much stronger and more balanced then it was and it would be hard for him to slot back in to the HBF or foward flank. Guys like Lokyer out of the side and Sidebottom in the side posses many of the strengths that Clarke has. Sidebottom obviously has the added strength of being a great reader of the play. Clarke would probably be pushing for Johnson's position long term but Johnson has had a strong start to the season and we have a number of players out of the side with strong form.

I think Marty is a good enough talent to break into the side, but I also think it will require more then he is likely to want to give. I mean that it would require a level of hard work that requires a real passion, love and want to succeed in this game, not one of someone who is just doing their job.

On the O.P there is no way Marty plays the role that Toove's does.

Wow what a bitter outlook you have! Are you disappointed in Dyas too ... or maybe not because he never played a senior game?
