Sydney fans, I hope you enjoy frustration, as thats what Marty will bring your club...whenever he gets the ball he tries to dodge and weave etc, should hear the crowd :(
In other words he backs himself, breaks lines and plays creative football.

I like Mattner a lot. Great long kick too.

Very good pick up for the Swans. They must have been offering him much more mullah.

Excellent work from Sydney's recruitment team. Mattner is quality and if used as a running wingman will be a damaging player for you guys. For pick 28, I reckon that deal is heavily tilted in the Swans favour. Good stuff. :thumbsu:

I reckon it's a great pick up.

Marty will provide that extra run we need, either from the wing and kicking long into the forward line, or off half back, freeing the Eski to play the wing role.

Well done Roosy and Andy I.

He is a good bloke too.

Oh well at least our average age on the list will reduce by .000345 of a year.

That would be extremely exciting to a supporter of a Vic club, who seem obsessed with 'youngsters' and 'youngest lists'.

They are arnt they. Personally i dont see the attraction of having a really young list. Its much better to trade for proven experiance than unproven rookie's. Its a much higher success rate.

I just don't understand this current fad, much like how we all stand around and applaude a $25 Billion budget surpluses but can't work out why people die while waiting at hospitals for admittance!!!!!!!!!!

This obsession with young players and getting early draft picks at all costs in Victoria, is weired considering no team as yet has won anything by totally rebuilding their list through the draft.

Much prefer to see a club take a balanced approach to trading players and picks, using the draft and a full compliment of rookie listed players who are turned over regularly.

This definitely opens things up for our backline. Let's hope injury wise the god's will be a little kinder in '08. It's no secret that all successful teams have a consistent line up.. Think Swans '05.

Let's not gloat about '07.

I'm sure we'll see a more running game from the Swannies next year.

Especially with Tadgh, Mal and now Mattner in the back.

I think Hall will have a big year.

Bring on '08...
If your coaching staff play Mattner down back as he did this year, then you'll be as disappointed as we are in his performances. Mattner is a natural wingman with a raking kick and can run very quickly. His disposal under pressure is terrible, which is why he is better on the wing, with an occasional incursion to the middle to lay some bone crunching tackles.

I love Marty, but a defender he ain't, it's just not his style. Hope he goes well for you guys, he deserves a better run and to be played in position.

He'll be on the wing, I'm pretty sure. Might get sometime on HBF, but our HBFs don't defend much anyway :D

Unfortunately Paul Roos has a history of playing some players out of position. Heath Grundy is a perfect example. The poor guy is a forward but whenever he plays for the Swans he is either in the midfield or worse in defence.

Grundy's case is a bit weird though, I'm pretty sure that he started off as a CHB in most of his junior football days, hence he was a FB prospect when we first got him, then the staff realised that he was a very decent set shot at goal and then we tried to make him a forward.

Haven't seen him much in midfield - just a few times when he tracked down all the way from our atttacking 50 and is exhausted by the time he got the ball near the centre bounce.

On the other hand, I think both Rutten and Glass started off their careers as forwards and failed before becoming AA defenders.

But yeah, I agree with you, Grundy is better off in our front line.

Rutten kicked 3 goals with his first three kicks in the afl, so I wouldn't call that a 'fail'. ;) Unfortunately this was under adolf ayres who thought he wasn't really any good. If Ayres was still at Adelaide at the end of 2004, it is fairly common knowledge that Rutten would have been delisted.

It was Craig that put him in the backlines when he took over as caretaker coach. Truck did alternate a little bit between chb and chf as a junior, but played the majority of his junior time up forward until a knee injury at 16/17 stuffed him up.

There was a good discussion on this on the main board in the last couple of months and really only Scarlett I think is the only top line defender that played most of his junior football in the backlines. The rest were all forwards.

Marty will tear shit up at the SCG........as long as ROOSY plays him at half-back or wing.

Kennelly a Mattner on the half-back line.

Was sorry to see Mattner go.

He`s quick, strong, and devestating when used on the wing.

With the shorter ground of the SCG I think he could be quite damaging.

Gets run down from behind waaaaay too many times though, so if Roo can remind him that players he`s run past still actually exist, then I think you`ll get a very handy player.

Very interesting article on Marty Mattner and his move to Sydney in today's Sunday Mail where the author writes that the loss of Marty's excellent form which he displayed when playing wing coincided with his move by Craig to the backlines.

Surprise. Surprise.

The next part is even more damaging IMO. Roos has told Marty that the reason he has been recruited on a 3 year contract is that he will be playing wing.

Goodness me!! Why didn't we think of that!!

Unfortunately many coaches over time have been guilty of not playing a player in their best position. Craig has just been a stubborn coach with regards to Mattner, not wanting to admit that he perhaps didn't get the best out of him. They're all guilty of it at some point these coaches.

Hopefully for our sake & Mattners sake he performs as expected otherwise Craig would have been spot on in his judgement!
Cheers!
