I thought he did well last night. He screwed it a few times (the first thing that comes to mind is him and Teddy colliding infront of goal and neither of them marking) but he really looked like he was giving it a good go.

Can someone remind me when the Swans decided Leo Barry was a go-to man to run the ball out of defence? I think I missed that meeting, with all due respect to Leo I'd prefer to have Kennelly and Mattner taking that role ;)

Mattner played alright, maybe a bit nervous. He looks quite tall and did pretty well for his 1st game for Sydney. With him, Kennelly, Malceski and Jack running out of the backline that will be a scary prospect. :D

Mattner took risks, he looked desperate to bomb it into the forward 50 whereas the others just tried to kick back and forth and hoping some options would eventually open up.

I like him a lot.

i understand he left the crows because he did not want to be played in defence
and he came to us because it was put to him that he'd be very good running the flanks on the scg
so WHY THE FCK is he playing in defence and not on the wing???!!!!
i feel sorry for him, he must be frustrated

and yes, he keeps trying, works hard
he'll be fine

If Malceski wasn't injured, then I think Mattner's wish would be granted. I really don't know much about Mattner's strengths, but if Barlow was to be included then Mattner may get the chance to play on the wing?

Agree Rancid. Such a god damn waste having him as a back pocket/HBF. Hopefully they release him this week and play Jack full time in his role and he can rebound as well.

I want Marty on the wing. Especially on the SCG. He could clear any ****ing flood teams can throw at us with a 50-60 metre bomb on the run.

PS. Thornton would of been the perfect replacement for Malceski on the HBF. The kid has class and poise. Such a shame he got injured.

don't move jack to back pocket, i'd rather mattner stayed there
jack has to be used nearer the ball, he's got super skills and a great foot pass
i'd move mattner to wing and bring mcveigh back to defence
i know mcveigh is sposed to be getting more chances to run this season but ... ahh, i dunno, don't wanna start bagging him again but both mattner and jack have to be kept outa defence

If you like Thornton, then wait for Laidlaw, both are similar players but Laidlaw was ahead of him in selection untill he did something to his knee in the pre season, (thanks for nothin Swans web page) should be back soon..

I agree. I reckon Laidlaw looks like being a very handy player for us. Can't wait for him to get back on the paddock.

He left the Crows because he didn't want to be used in a man-marking defensive role.

He has nothing against being used in defence the way we have used Kennelly and Malceksi in defence in the past. In fact thats the way he likes to be used and one of the reasons he wanted to join the club.

so WHY THE FCK is he playing in defence and not on the wing???!!!!
Because we Malceksi out injuried and he wasn't brought to the club to play "just on the wing".

i feel sorry for him, he must be frustrated
I doubt he his.

I'm not sure I agree they are similar players. I reckon Laidlaw has more potential to be explosive. He is quicker and an absolutely superb overhead mark for his size.

I don't think Thornton's ever going to be an excitement machine but everything about his game is solid, he works hard, and could yet have a long career with us as one of those unobtrusive type of players that you barely notice during a game but then realise did absolutely everything asked of him.

Thanks liz, i have only seen them on telly, and i guess their hair, pace, and long kicking were the similarities i could see..
Though its good to hear you rate Laidlaw so highly, im really looking fwd to him making regular senior appearances.
BTW where and more importantly who do you see him playing and replacing?
I would have thought HBF, and Bevan..

I agree, he is a great size as well, took Riewoldt for a short while so looks like he could play on a tall or a small. Showed plenty of courage in the marking contest with Jones and I think he will only get better from here. Killed the Swans at the SCG a couple of years ago so that might give him some added confidence this week.

Played pretty okay today. Though some of his passes were disastrous today!!! Particulary when he had to kick it out of Port's goal sqaure after a rushed behind. He kicked it straight down the throat of Port player but luckily he wasn't aware!
