Mick sticks with Roos
By Geoff Poulter

Wednesday, October 24, 2001

KANGAROO veteran Mick Martyn has had a change of heart and will play with the club next year.

Martyn had been considering quitting the Roos and putting himself in the national draft after being taken off the veterans' list.

However, football manager Geoff Walsh said Martyn spoke to him this week and told him he wanted to stay at Arden St.

''We're pleased he's made that decision,'' Walsh said yesterday.

Martyn, removed from the veterans' list to accommodate captain Wayne Carey and vice-captain Anthony Stevens, will have to be delisted. He then hopes to be redrafted by the Roos in the national draft on November 25.

''He understands the process,'' Walsh said.

If the Roos do decide to redraft Martyn, they would negotiate a new one-year deal.

Martyn, 33, has played 268 games in 14 seasons, the fourth highest at the club, behind Wayne Schimmelbusch, Keith Greig and David Dench.

But he has been injury-stricken in the past two seasons with hamstring problems.

He missed 11 games this year and 10 the previous season, testing the club's patience.

Late in the season, coach Denis Pagan intimated it might be wise for Martyn to retire.

The club also has made a commitment for next season to knee victim Winston Abraham, despite his expected long recovery period on the sidelines.

Walsh said the Roos were in the process of completing a new one-year deal for ruckman Matthew Burton.

I'm glad Micky has chosen to stay with us (and hopefully we can re-draft him) It would've been a huge shame if he'd gone to another club or worse : not been drafted by anyone.

He's been a legend for us, hopefully we can see him play out the rest of his days with North.

It's interesting that the club has stuck by Winnie - it was probably the right thing to do.

Yes, the club needs to show some loyalty to the players after the loyalty they showed to the club last year through voluntary pay cuts etc.
