Mason Cox...showing some promise

Had a bit of a peek at training this morning, and spent a bit of time watching Cox.

Moves really really well for a large unit - actually got a bit of zip to be honest. Moves a lot better than Grundy or Witts. Goldsack and White spent a lot of time talking to him and coaching him during the drills.

I also think he will end up being a marking threat. There was one contest on the wing where the ball was kicked long out of the backline to a group of around 4-5 players, and he worked his body to be about third in line, but still got first hands on the ball despite being three deep (and Grundy was one of the players in front).

Also slotted a set shot straight through from 50 metres out at the end of the session. Coming along extremely well.

Useful intel.
Ta muchly.

Thanks!

No offence to Jesse but maybe he should spend a bit more time on improving his own game / getting runs on the board before coaching others?? (Or is he injured at present??) I do appreciate other players taking time to help Mason but we also want to make sure he learns from the best.

You don't have to be the best player to be the best coach.

Coaching 101.

Agreed but with Maxy as a case in point they do get the best out of themselves. White has height, weight and athleticism that add up to I expect more than what we generally see from him. I think he will benefit from playing 3rd KPF rather than 2nd.

Also I did say 'learns from the best' without saying whether that was coach or player.

The footage on afl.com.au ("Sidebottom flies ..." Article) is a little embarrasing for the lad (gotta laugh but).

No doubt they picked the worst footage to show!

Good luck Coxy ... Keep up the hard work!

You can learn an awful lot about your own game by coaching and teaching. The role of coach forces you to analyse people's methods. Often there are poor habits that you see others doing that you can recognise as poor habits, but that you still do yourself. White has the tools, but comes across as needing a refresher course in basics101. This role may really help him.

Nah, not even close!

Cox is yet to even play a game of footy yet! :p

Well people in the Media has said how impressed the club is with Cox and How far ahead he is of where they thought he would be at this stage of his Development

There's a big difference between being ahead of where they thought he'd be in his development, and being better than a guy who was on our list for 3 years Dave...

Was expecting him to get 5 touches a game and struggle in the ruck.

Instead he is doing well in the ruck, taking some great grabs and regularly kicking goals

I think his marking has a long way to go (in a good way). He is getting his hands on the ball in contested situations, but just not quite bringing them down. I think that will come on a fair bit as he works on it and puts on size. I think he will be a good contested mark, and an above average tap ruckman (I think he is a better tap ruckman than Grundy and Witts at the moment).

Promising - probably almost at 50% chance of making it in my opinion.

No rush needed here, making good progress but realistically let's just see where he is at come seasons end and the beginning of next year.

Another match where he's listed in the best players. When it comes to international footballers, I prefer to see actual good performances, rather than a lot of supportive statements from coaches. He's made a very good start by anyone's measure. The fact that he has so much scope for improvement makes you wonder where he's going to be in 12 months time
