I think Michael Christian may have other ideas on Cox playing next week.
He shouldn’t have as initial contact was clearly made below the shoulder to the upper arm. Pretty harsh to cop 1 week when momentum and a falling opponent caused the impact to later slide high.

Initial contact.? I’m sorry but I haven’t read anywhere that it its judged on where the initial contact is. Clearly a week, careless act; deserved the week.

I'd say bring in McLarty but given we elected not to play him last week in the VFL I guess either he's not in our plans at this early stage or is injured.

Not certain they'll be wanting to switch Moore forward after just one game either.

Mihocek has played some football forward I believe.

Yes Mason had a poor game, but why can’t people just comment without the emotive hyperbole?

It was his what 20th game of football, he isn’t going to dominate every week.

And drizzly slipper conditions hardly perfect for big men. McEvoy (1 mark) Schoenmakers (2 Marks) and Roughy for the Hawks hardly dominated the air either...

Also under the roof at Etihad earlier in the day two highly rated KP prospects - McCartin and Hipwood - both had basically no impact on the game.

Big forwards like TomaHawk, Daniher and Patton all had games in there first 30 games where they just didn’t get near it.

Even Boyd at the Dogs in 2016, he had games just as bad as Cox in Rd1...but he kept getting games and played his best ever game in the GF.

Big raw KP forwards will have games where they just stink it up.

Cox needs to be persisted with, as he showed in JLT and the end of 2017 that he can gives us a couple of goals and be a ruck presence and good target...

He won’t deliver a consistent output yet...but what big ruck size KPF has when they had played just 20 games?

Carless act, sorry, Christian graded it as intentional. Had your classification been used Cox would have only received a fine even if contact was deemed high. As I said 1 week was harsh.

In terms of body vs high the rules say contact to both the body and high will be classed as the latter, however the rules do not define whether or not the contact has to simultaneous. For mine it's a grey area, which would ordinarily be defined through case law. In regards to Cox very clearly there were two separate points of impact.

Either way regardless of what the rule actually states it doesn't mean I can't consider the decision harsh in the circumstances or that I can't hold an opinion that initial contact should be considered.

Further while Cox's elbow wasn't tucked into his rib cage his arm wasn't raised away from his body either.

Cox collected Hawthorn's Daniel Howe high with his elbow during the third quarter of Saturday night's game at the MCG. Match Review Officer Michael Christian judged Cox's action to be intentional conduct with low impact to the head, triggering a one-game suspension.

Christian told reporters on Monday he had deemed Cox's and Robinson's strikes to be intentional because both had raised their arms away from their bodies.

Christian also said that in grading Cox's action he had been mindful of its potentially serious nature.

"Ordinarily the impact (to Howe) would have been below the force required to constitute a reportable offence, but we took into account in this particular case that the action had the potential to cause a more serious injury," Christian said.

Level headed response

For the first time he actually jumped towards the ball and used his height to advantage

Unfortunately he dropped around 6-7 marks, perhaps on any other day and better conditions he holds 80% of them

Time will Come.

My first reaction to Cox's performance was that he needs to be dropped. He can't mark when there's body contact, and besides relief ruck, he does little else. But i'm also sure he had a really bad game and that happens sometimes. I'm not sure i'd have the guts to do it but it'll be interesting if Buckley keeps the faith. Cox won't learn how to hold marks in the VFL because of his size advantage and the quality of players he's up against there. There's not much to be gained for his development by dropping him. But the team would be better for it. I reckon Mihocek comes in and Moore goes back forward.
Plus he's only playing in front of 5000 there if you're lucky, not 50000+, much more pressure and it looks like he can't handle it. Not sure we can afford to play him long term for him to overcome that pressure, he should be used to it by now.

Yep. Coz was pretty flaccid tonight. At least he has an excuse - he’s a project player playing a position that he is foreign to. Another experiment that is best suited to the Vfl.

At least he looked shattered at the end of the game. More than I can say for a few of our better players.
Yeah there were some smiling their assess off, practically happy with the loss.

Yeah he crashed a couple of packs, but dropped a couple of sitters and misread a few others.

But the reality is he is a 20 game ruck/KPF who is still learning positioning.

Even #1 picks and star junior ruck/KPF types like Patton, Boyd, TomaHawk, Daniher all had games where they were ineffective and looked lost in their first 30.

Nobody really expects Cox to become a Patton, TomaHawk or Daniher...instead more of a David Hale, Alessio type option

Lol he's 26yrs old.
This whole concept is laughable.

David Hale?
That bloke could kick the odd serious bags and was incredibly mobile, Cox is the complete opposite.

It's not very hard Cox is no good unless he is the number 1 ruckman, doesn't suit our game plan.

Forward like should be small agile and put pressure on the opposition players when the ball hits the deck how can this be done with Reid and Cox?

Varcoe WHE Sidebottom

Fasolo Moore Elliot

I like that set up except prefer Varcoe back. Not sure who I would replace him with given Goldy is out.

Yep David Hale.

Hale’s best year was 2012 when he was able to play majority of the year as the Hawks main ruck.

But for the majority of his career he played more KPF back-up ruck as guys like McIntosh, Bailey and McEvoy were the preferred #1.

Even in his best goal kicking years, when at North in 07-08, his best return was just 37 at 1.7 per game (boosted by his 8 in a day out). And that year he would kick 4 one week, but then not get a goal for 2 or 3 weeks and have games where he would barely get a touch.

Even as a 200 game veteran at Hawthorn, Hale had games where he simply had no impact and barely get a mark and have no scoreboard impact.

That is what the expectation should be for Cox, to kick 20-30 goals if playing the full season...but it would be 3 one week, nothing for a few weeks, and a couple of stinkers thrown in to the mix. His main role to be a long target and ensure at the very least a spillage so our small can pounce...but also actually providing a dominant influence around stoppages when played as ruck, as he is actually a better tap ruck than Grundy.

I agree with that and don’t think we can play both Reid and Cox up forward.

Moore will be great across HB though, and think that we should persist with him there.

Once back I would go Cox surrounded by a mix of Elliott, WHE, Fas, DeGoey, Stephenson, Daicos, Crocker, Aish or Kirby...depending on form and fitness.

Cox has the ability to be a weapon as 2nd ruck and potentially exploit opposition when their relief guy plays for that 5-10 min a quarter. That is a point of difference worth exploring, as it worked against the Dees and Cox has shown on his day he can clunk the odd mark.

He just a had sh1t game, but so did Varcoe, Langdon, Howe, Adams and WHE.

If he is stinking it up consistently then drop him for Reid or McClarty.

Unfortunately I don’t really see a role for Reid in our best 22 unless Dunn isn’t being picked.

He's not a better tap ruck than Grundy.
Watch some of Grundys stoppage work and hitouts to advantage.
Cox not even close, he's just taller.

We have no need for Cox in our side.
The way the game is played he offers nothing around the ground or on the deck.

He's playing the game 20 years too late.

You may be right that he is 20 years too late, but I still think that he can offer a point of difference.

Anybody who expected Cox to kick 2+ each week, and be consistent need to reassess, as that simply isn’t realistic.

One bad game doesn’t deserve the hysteria

He sure can, not many teams have that slow beanpole option who can’t take contested marks and totally craters your forward pressure.

There were a couple of guys smiling with and high fiving with their Hawthorn opponents.

When you played a team 12 times and lost to them 11 times, you’d expect to be disappointed at being bettered by a team that you should reasonably expect to beat.

I don’t understand this thinking?

In the good old days, even Collingwood and Carlton players would have a beer with each other after the game.

It is important to be a good loser and also a gracious winner, or else you risk becoming a flog like David Warner.

They can be disappointed but still congratulate the opponent on a good game, even blokes who had been at each other all game need to be able to shake hands.

Nothing wrong with a quick laugh with a former team mate etc., a player doesn’t have to sook it up and storm of and sulk every time we lose to show they ‘feel’ the loss.

The question is, will Cox be bought back for the Carlton game, or relinquished to the VFL.
To be exposed to Kruezer?
I wouldn’t mind him being bought in as a forward, but FFS Bux, you’ve got to instruct your mids to put the ball high, 10 metres in front of him.
Putting it on his head won’t work. Put it in front and let him go to the drop and use his long arms.

lol....as if our mids could kick the ball where they intend to. Our shitful midfield kick the ball in the general direction. No point instructing them to put it somewhere specific.....none of them can do it.

I apologise.
Alcohol has twisted my mind and given me a positive outlook.
I promise to get back to my normal grumpy self ASAP.
