Didn’t really see the hype personally

VFL output can be super misleading
Aarts, Townsend, Gibbons all dominated the VFL before getting drafted but ultimately just became OK afl players

With our list spots being somewhat of a premium right now I don’t think we really missed anything
Townsends 5 game streak at the back end of 2017 was pretty handy for us

At 171cm he would have to be really something special for recruiters to pick him up. I guess they felt he wasn’t.

28 players have kicked just as many or more goals than him in the VFL this year and that’s his one wood.

Probably also didn’t help he didn’t stand out the game before the draft with 0.2 on the scoreboard. If someone was umming and ahhing about him they might have gone elsewhere.

Let's not forget there's 21 teams in VFL and KPF are the focal point of goalkicking throughout history. Will Davidson also didn't get recruited last MSD and he's making 17 other teams look pretty foolish. If Raso keeps chugging along as he has so far, no doubt he'll be on an AFL list next year..... hopefully ours

This has been a comically perfect example of how fans have no idea what goes into list management/building

Probably has more to do with the fact he just turned 19 with a lot of development to go with not a lot of VFL form to back him up. He's really only played a handful or less good VFL games and clubs opted for more proven/physically developed players in the MSD.

Doesn't mean he won't be picked up in the future or doesn't have ability. If he has a good second half to the year I'd guess he's on a list next year via rookie draft most likely.

Great post mate, completely agree.

I don't think I have ever seen McCarthy miss a kick, chooses the right option every time. He has great endurance and whilst not electric he's pretty quick. He averages 23 possessions off half back in the VFL this season or there abouts, that's a lot. 24-25 is exactly the age you want him to be because he is ready to go as opposed to developing. Might not get to 100, but could easily cement a spot at WC for a few good years.
23 possessions off HB at VFL is about what would you expect though.

Banks at HB at AFL level averaging 27 and younger.

Like we had no idea with Davidson. He puts in for the rest of the season guarantee he gets rookied. Haven’t seen a small forward his calibre coming through the juniors.
Yep
Rookie draft his best bet from hereonin

Absolutely
Forever a Tiger legend
But looking at his output overall calling him a C grader would probably be generous

I don't share your optimism regarding Raso getting drafted next year. He'll be up against a whole new army of 18 year olds who he didn't have to compete with this draft. There will also be a shitload of 18 year old small forwards around the country knocking on AFL doors next year.

Additionally history isn't kind to VFL players. Only 3 VFL players were taken in 104 selections in the national draft last year. Recruiters would simply rather take a punt on an kid coming out of the talent league. Same in 2023. That's just a fact.

2024. National and Rookie Draft VFL selections
Riley Bice 23 -186cm defender
Sam Davidson 22 - 191cm midfielder
Aidan Johnson 24 - 193cm key forward

Raso is a 171cm small forward.

He needs to do far far more than, as you put it, just chug along as he has so far. That didn't get him picked up this year did it? He would have to put together an eye watering final 12 rounds to go some way towards changing the opinions of those who select AFL players and who have already passed on him, several times.

just chugging along leading our goal kicking at 171cm? need i remind people we have mrj and steely green on our list whove never shown as much at vfl level. our recruitment department isnt infallible.

yeah ok but not sure that has a lot of relevance to my post.

Yeah but what has it got to do with Rioli or Green or how our recruiting dept is going?

My whole post was on Raso's chances of getting drafted.. anywhere.

i'm using us an example, we've passed on him multiple times but we chose to draft green and mrj who never put in an 'eye watering 12 weeks in the vfl' ever and still bafflingly get afl games to no effect. teams make bad calls and tend to double-down on them. I reckon he'll make a lot of clubs look silly by the end of the year and barring injury should be a lock to at least be rookied.
