The biggest concern with Masten is not so much his inconsistency, rather that he fails to even show glimpses of quality.

You would think that with somebody drafted so high every now and again you would watch him do something and think, "that is quality" but this year I cringe every time he goes near the ball and for good reason because I have forever defended him and I am just hoping he doesn't do something awful when he goes near it, unfortunately he appears to be doing that consistently.

Burns says that he is one who is likely to step up for the derby so it sounds like he is going to play this week, but how long can he play poorly for before he gets the axe?

Not so much this year, but he definitely showed how good he can be in small spurts during the 2009 season.

He has 2 issues.
1) He was the premium selection for losing Judd
2) In comparing him to others in a very good draft he does not stack up well. Morton (4), Palmer (7), Dangerfield (10) and Rioli (12) make his selection look very ordinary.

Morton has done SFA. Prefer Masten every day of the week.

Palmer had a very good debut season. It'll be interesting to see if he can get back to that.

Dangerfield looks decent but hasn't done much. The footy world is obsessed with him because commentators blow their load at his 'kamikaze-style of play'. Could end up being a very good player, but hasn't shown more signs than Masten in any way, shape or form.

Rioli is an obvious standout of the draft and Hawthorn did very well out of it. Still not a superstar and is a beneficiary of media hype. Not sold on his ability to become a star midfielder either. We needed a gut running accumulator to replace Cousins. Masten has these attributes.

If you want to compare highlights packages, Masten at #3 doesn't look like a fantastic get. Kreuzer and Rioli are the only established stars from that draft. We'd be saying the same about Cotchin if he'd performed the way he has at the Tigers.

Of the 07 Draft, I'd rate performances thus far (excluding Harry Taylor as a mature pick): Kreuzer, Rioli, Palmer, Masten, Pears, Cotchin, Ebert, Dangerfield, Grimes, Morton, Ward, Otten.

Yeah i thought he was actually pretty good last year, disposal had improved heaps. He was actually copping some praise on here, some folks have short memories

This year he's either out of form badly or carrying something.

Against North Melbourne last year, for example.

Didn't he hurt his knee in that game?

He does play for the eagles...

His kicking has actually been good this year, except for the Bombers game. Just hasn't got enough of the pill and when he has he's been too handball happy

Good young players, but out of them + Masten, sh*t there has been some bad luck with injury lately.

Come back and compare this group in 60 games time and Masten may well be ahead of the others, so hard to compare so early and when all have had fitness problems.

Was playing Great football in the first half in the derby

But knowing West Coast luck he will probably be out for the rest of year
Shame really because despite his critics on this forum it really showed in
the derby that when he is on song he really is the only eagle mid fielder
that looks really dangerous when he gets the ball :(
