No GA copped a lot of shi t because he was a crap preparation coach.

I dont think I have ever said NC was a better match day coach than GA. I like how NC has the players playing for him , I also like NCs preparation. I sometimes struggle to see why moves arent made. But I could be wrong .. its just easier to ask when we lose ;)
Oh please, so no one ever questioned GA why he didn't move Mattner off Woewodin a few years ago at FP?

No one ever quiestion why Gary Ayres never made a move on multiple occasions when Alyster Lynch was giving a football lesson to who ever was playing on him at the time?

Gary Ayres copped a lot of **** on this board for his lack of moves during the match. He had exactly the same phylosophy as NC does and thats to stick with it and have faith that we will do it better than the opposition.

Not many people, is any ever questioned GA for his lack of preparation but rather the lack of match day moves. I am sure if we used a search function here on BF we would come up with hundreds of posts questioning Ayres' match day coaching.

I am sorry, I didn't know we had access to the coaching box

That bit of news came directly from the players mouths in an interview Roo did up here after a game a couple of years ago. Gary Ayres did NOT allow the players to use their own initiative. If they did so, there would be ramifications. The question was asked of Roo again this year and he said the difference in coaching styles was marked (between Ayres and Craig). Actually it was interesting to hear what both he and Burton had to say about their various coaches. I have also spoken a bit to Malcolm, Gary and Neil over the years and without a doubt, Neil Craig is THE most positive one amongst them (mind you my conversations with Malcolm were post-premierships when he basically said he'd had enough).

Gary was a reactive coach, only it would take him two - three weeks to make a move we'd all been screaming for. Craig is also reactive but may take a quarter or two IF he makes the move at all. (Rutton in the forward lines against the Bullies was ok until we knew what the doggies were lining up with - we would have had him moved to the back lines immediately, Craig decided to see how it went before he made the move in the second quarter. Method to his madness? Who knows.

Bottom line is, we don't know what the grand plan is. I guess we have to have faith somewhere along the line. It appears that whilst we were winning, NC was brilliant. Now we are losing, his style is being questionned.

I don't know whether he is a good match day coach or not (I am still reserving judgement). But I, like everyone else, get frustrated when obvious things arent done.

I think the key point of the thread is whether we think NC has the game day nouse to win the tight contests. IMHO he does, but hasn't shown it too much this year (quite possibly because we haven't had too many close games). Do I think we are a one trick pony, No, I do not. Has NC shown his card too early, another resounding no. Nobody has seen his card, nobody knows what is going to happen, not us as supporters, not the opposition. Only Craigy, the rest of the coaching panel and our boys know what's going on. As I've said before, time will tell.

Robert Shaw confused the players because he would change the game plan mid-match not because he made some moves. He'd tell them to go long in 1 quarter then go short in the next, thats why he lost the players.

A coach has only a limited amount of things he can do during a game - motivate the team at the breaks, point out where they are going right or wrong, interchange players (largely predetermined nowadays) and call the changes when needed. I can see Carl's point in leaving a player in a losing position for his long term good to a point, but now we're at the business end of the season short term goals are also important. A flag lasts forever.

Imagine the outcry if they left an out of form Jericho at full forward for his own good in a premiership GF rather than a preseason one.
