It was a clean sweep of the board for the Coburg Tigers in their first home game against the Springvale Scorpions for season 2004. In near perfect conditions a crowd in excess of 1500 saw a rejuvenated Coburg outfit signal their intentions for the 2004 season.
The fans, both young and old, united to see their tiger boys play their first home match for the season. Donning a strict code of navy blue and red attire, we knew from the start the Tiger fans meant business. Membership sales boomed on the day with members proudly wearing their new or renewed membership medallions around their necks VIP style.
New Acting President, Dean Mighell and the Board warmly welcomed Golden Tiger Members, sponsors, guests and the Springvale Board to their first home match of the season with a traditional Sunday spit roast prior to 2pm kick off. The Club boasting an enviable team of excited and passionate volunteers helped the Tigers capture a smooth and successful day on all facets.
Reserves coach Carl Steinfort tasted success with a 15-point win over a physical Springvale outfit. Young tiger, Nathan Foley was brilliant in the midfield as was Vincent Randello. Adam Cosham was a good moving forward finishing with three goals, and defenders Ken Darby and Daniel Roberts were solid in defence. It was a physical encounter with the ‘Burgers’ playing their best football when they linked up through the middle giving the forwards first use of the ball.
The win has boosted Coburg’s confidence going into next Saturdays’ game against Williamstown, which is sure to be a measuring stick for Steinfort and his charges.
Senior coach David Flood was extremely pleased with the performance of his Senior team on Sunday notching up his first win for the club. At near full strength, the Burgers lead at every change finishing with a 10 point win over a very competitive Springvale line up.
Young Tiger Kane Pettifer was unstoppable up forward with 26 possessions, 11 marks and 4 majors, putting in his bid for best on ground and a possible call up from Richmond in the coming weeks. Adam Houlihan was also sensational with 34 possessions and 9 marks; Mark Dragicevic and Simon Fletcher showed their fiery presence around the ground. Coburg local boy Eric Kuret continued his great start to the season showing plenty of heart and putting his head over the ball.
The win leaves Coburg one and one with added confidence in their preparation to take on the reigning premiers Williamstown on Saturday.
Our next game is against Williamstown at the Burbank Oval in Williamstown on Saturday the 17th April.
Reserves: 11:10am
