Game Day Match simulation v GWS

Just finishing watching the game

Cox has put an emphasis on contested ball and even though this was a practice match you could see glimpses of what they were working on

But it still felt like the Grundy, Heeney, Gulden, Chad show from last year

Game plan hasn't really changed much, I guess don't fix what's not broken

Don't think McCartin will be successful as a fwd & Blakey shouldn't be playing as our 2nd key defender. I'd rather just go with a Ladhams up forward over McCartin.
Until Logan is fit I'd prefer McLean over Ladhams, with or without McCartin. He's more disciplined and can work within a structure.
I'd prefer McCartin back until we can trust another KPD to work alongside Melican so we agree furiously there.

I feel like he is but there’s no way he should be. Gotta give him opportunities, he’s a gun.
He is a gun. Sydney know it. He was picked in both squads. He played in both squads.

The result. We smashed GWS. He was a part of that.

He then played in the VFL part of the match simulation.
He did well. The Sydney Swans want a good look at him before Opening Round.

I like it.

I recall having a good look at his history after we drafted him (like many I was surprised). The thing that really struck me was that every time he got a chance he didn't just play to the level, he exceeded it. In the U18 game for WA he obliterated the #1 pick Jason Horne-Francis to the extent they had to move him out of the middle. This is exactly what we need. I don't believe his character or will has gone away. If he isn't picked I think it will be a massive error.

Like most on here, I’m a huge fan of Gus. However, I’m worried he will continue to be stuck in the ressies. He needs opportunity but at whose expense? At this stage he would have to play as a small forward but he’s not as good in this role as the other options. If he was to play in his natural position then we are not playing Heeney, Mills, Rowbottom, or Warner in the middle. He can’t play wing. He’s a victim of his specialist skill set.

He is a contested bull and cannot break into a midfield unit who lacks contested bulls.

He doesn't have a second string to his bow. So he would need to play 100% in the midfield.

I won't be surprised when he is our Josh Kennedy when he goes to a club who needs exactly him.

He needs to work on his forward craft to get into this side

I am not sure I agree as we have plenty of goal kicking mids. We can afford to have 1 midfielder in our best 23 who isn't that.

Sure thing, where does he go?

Opening round, first bounce. You can almost lock our midfield around Grundy will be Heeney, Rowbottom and Mills. Does he replace one of them? Probably not.

Let's look at the wing, it'll be 2/3 or Gulden, McInerney and Warner. Gus night be able to run on the wing, but not at the expense of any of those 3.

So we place him on the bench? How long does he have to wait until he can get a run?

So you want him on the field for some game time. Maybe in the forwards because he's not a small defender. But he is not damaging at all as a forward and is worse than Papley, Hayward, Campbell and that's before I get to Corey.

So where does he go in a fit 23?

I think sometimes we lose sight of the fluidity of team structures in the modern game.
Gus can spend a RELATIVELY low % of time at CBAs as he establishes himself in the team but still spending plenty of time in the contest around the ground. Where he stands at CBAs is not necessarily his "position". He could be at HBF and race up to seal off the contest as Roberts sometimes does or down forward. He can play a run with role on one of the oppo's better mids starting at HFF. He would be excellent at that. Don't get tangled up by what is written on the team sheet.

Well considering how bad our clearances have been maybe Heeney, Rowbottom and Mills is not the best combination.

Which is why I say he needs to work on his forward craft. For those periods where he isn't at the CBA he needs to be playing his other role. Which he currently has shown he's not capable of doing

Either you didn't read what I wrote or you disagree. Fine.
So do you think a midfielder does CBAs and another role, eg forward but doesn't work in stoppage around the ground?
How many players do we normally run behind the ball? Hint: it isn't 6.

I think McCartin will continue to play forward until we have more than 1 fit KPF. If McLean, Mcdonald or Buller can get fit and force their way into the team then I think McCartin will move back again.

Yeah no reason at all he can't play a similar role to what Adams did

Amazing how this board constantly grizzled about Horse playing blokes out of position.

And yet here we are, demanding Cox play blokes out of position.

Gus is a pure inside mid. And a very good one at that. Playing him anywhere else isn’t doing anyone any favours.

This is exactly my point. Lots of people are happy to jump up and down about someone having to be given a go without arguing who they replace. Gus has to play in the midfield to be effective. It means one of our midfielders is not playing there. Gus is possibly Rowbottom’s understudy as the only other mid who doesn’t have a clear second position.

then he can do it in reserves
